Honestly, fucking up suicide like that isn't particularly unusual, from what I understand. A surprisingly large amount of people seem to think that a gunshot wound to any part of the head will kill you, when in reality the main reason why a headshot is bad news is because your brain is there, and if the brain doesn't get hit then the wound is probably survivable given appropriate treatment..Hence why between 1 in 10 and 1 in 4 people survive attempted suicide by firearm, even though it should be almost impossible to screw up if you do it right.

Not to mention that your chances of screwing up a suicide go up when you are a stupid contractnik who is already fucked up from a combination of exhaustion, mistreatment, injury and alcoholism.

Don't they actually have manuals about how to properly do it?

Aimed too far forwards. Very common mistake. The bullet misses most of the brain and just blows off your face, maybe takes a bit of your frontal lobe if you're lucky.

Unfortunately, lack of a face won't kill you. You can have your entire face mangled and hanging off via bear attack/failed suicide, and still survive longer than you'd like to endure even without medical treatment.
