How come it's so hard to reason with people or de-escalate on 4chan? With online friends, or offline friends, it's possible to have a conversation and work things out. But on 4chan, if you say something someone dislikes and they view you as an adversary, that's typically the end of it. 1/4 of the time you can de-escalate, the rest of the time nothing you say can stop the person's chimpout. Anything you say can and will be used against you. Is it low IQ? Mental illness? People just being mean for shits and giggles despite not actually being mad?

i think that the anonymous nature of this place gives people too much power to be inconsequentially mean. i had a really pleasant interaction last night with a poster who seemed super sweet after i had made an unkind joke and upset him, which i should not have done. it's not the sort of thing i would ever have done to someone in real, but that sort of thing is too easy here, unfortunately. i wasn't trying to be /cruel/, but it was nonetheless just not nice. i'm thankful he was one of those rare sweet and forgiving posters.
by extension, i think too many people get caught up in the idea that there are no repercussions for repeatedly doubling down in an effort to be Correct, and if not Correct, hurt the other person such that it no longer seems to matter who is Correct. who's going to do anything about it? who's going to remember, when you have no face and no name to identify you?

I agree, this can be a fun place to unwind and make terrible off-color jokes that would get you banned on any other website, and sometimes you can accidentally go too far when being playfully mean for the lulz and accidentally upset someone. But there's a big difference between accidentally upsetting someone (on a website where that's relatively unlikely anyway due to board culture) and knowingly hurting someone for prolonged periods of time, as is common in other threads/boards.
