"Repetition is the mother of all learning" edition

>What is Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royalroad, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

There is an Update from Shirtaloon:

G'day all. I wanted to give everyone an update, and a sense of what has happened thus far. I was on a big holiday with friends and family when I got sick. Very sick, in a couple of ways that both have high mortality rates. I came close to dying when my lungs and kidneys were unable to support themselves unassisted, but the doctors were able to save me and I ended up in a week-long coma instead.

I am now out of danger and on the road to recovery, but that road is a long one, and has not been without setbacks. I remain hospitalised but grow stronger by the day. The lingering question is how many ramifications of this ordeal will be permanent.

As for when chapters will resume, I can't be certain. Even once I'm out of hospital, there will be home treatment to adapt to. I have had to cancel my attendance at LitRPGcon in July as my doctors think that much travel is too risky with my lungs. That saddens me because I wanted to go enough to risk the USA right now. I do think that July is the most likely window for getting back to the chapters, but things remain up in the air right now, so time will tell.

I would like to thank everyone who has sent well-wishes, and apologise for not answering individual messages as I concentrate on recovery. I'm very much looking forward to being well enough to write, as well as to eating non-hospital food.

Autists are actually uniquely qualified for character writing, by virtue of characters in fiction being very, very different then actual people, a hodgepodge of all kinds of facets that will need to be constructed to properly use them in your writing. You probably just have to flesh your characters out, and to always remember that characters build upon the other as you write.
Wagmi, aspie bro. Don't let your lack of social butterflyness stop you from creating good characters.

>"You talk too much."

>With his staff pointed up to the heavens, he started speaking.
>Snorting in disdain, the Orc kept speaking, undisturbed even as the pressure unleashed by Anon kept increasing.
>"It doesn't matter what you do. Don't you understand that I am backed by one of the 'Big 5 publishers'? A mere wandering self-publisher, you can't harm me!"
>Gritting his teeth, Anon held his staff tighter, ignoring the nonsense the orc kept speaking
>"I don't care about joining a publisher! I'll keep writing what I want." With a huff, Anon swung his sword.
>Widening his eyes, the Orc muttered in disbelief as he recognized the technique that was launched at the speed of thought!
>"There's no mistaking it...!"
>As the Orc's body was bisected in two, Anon narrowed his eyes and spoke the name of his only skill.

In a world where an Olympus of writers, deemed untouchable gods, set the standards with every word they speak, readers are, instead, willingly throwing themselves to the bottom of the barrel, just to feel something.

The last russian novelslop sphere I've parachuted into is basically an entire genre about "protagonist goes back in time to help Stalin win the Cold War" their web fictions are far more attached to cultural identity in a more myopic way than China so I couldn't really relate to their grudges. A Baron Ungern or Rasputin isekai would be far cooler but it's always about Stalin so I just forgot about Russian genres.

I have a pretty big drop-off in viewership between my first and second chapters, and then from there on out it stays the same/dwindles at a lower rate.
Do you guys get the same thing? I'm try to figure out if it’s because my chapters are too big, or something in the text is throwing readers. My goal is to tweak the story and fix things up once I complete book one in about ten chapters, maybe even throw it on Amazon so I can make myself a physical copy. Maybe including the art is too much?

Completely normal. Viewers pick a story, read the first chapter and decide to keep reading or to drop. Same as the story goes on, some click for the first few then drop, others drop when they finish binging, etc. Just keep writing, as long as people aren't telling your story sucks suddenly, it's normal (and even then some may just say out of bitterness).
I haven't read your work yet so I can't judge if you're doing something wrong, sorry.
Just power through, readers are more likely to pick a story that already has some lenght, and the more you pick, the more followers you'll have.

Does pic count as a web novel? I started reading it recently.
I'm somewhat rubbing up against the janky translation but enjoying it so far.
The gimmick/premise that he's the only one able to figure out the legendary past emperor's "secret code" because they were both isekai protagonists from China and it's just written in Mandarin is funny. The story has a lot of amusing scenes of the main character just being a poser and trying to act edgy and mysterious when he has no idea what's going on.

Yes it's a webnovel. It just happens to be a Chinese one, the genre is hugely popular over there. There is an 'authorized' translation which is markedly better than the machine translated crap but it's on a pay-to-read site. You would have to do a bit of internet sleuthing to find ebook rips from the site.

I read half of Ch1. Everything I read was written fine. My main issue was not getting any hooks at the beginning or middle that made me want to keep reading.
Proper noun spamming makes this more noticeable. If the only thing happening is talking, loading a bunch of words we have no context for is just going to make the conversation harder to be invested in.
You seem really invested in your worldbuilding. I'm sure there's some conflict you could think of at the start that could get readers wondering how your world works.
I wouldn't be suprise if I enjoyed later chapters, but when you're competing with thousands RR slop novels, there needs to be something compelling that's gonna pull people early in the chapter that keeps them around long enough to care who the Feathered Prince is.

I'm going to second everything this anon said right down to only reading half the first chapter before losing interest. It's so on the nose I knew what story was linked before checking. There's no tension or points of interest to get invested in. It's a guy going to the bar with his boss and running into a friend there. Your first chapter is how you pitch your story to someone, and that's a shitty pitch.

A litRPG has the author drop a paragraph that tells the reader "Jimmy Longpenis has 50MP and every spell he has costs 10MP. He only regains MP outside of combat, at the rate of 5 per hour." Or they just do it in an formatted box.

Sanderson would then go on to spend half the book being about the character learning, through various methods, what exactly is the power they use to cast spells(without ever calling it MP), why they are only able to regain the ability to cast spells outside of combat, why it is 5MP per hour(without ever using numbers or calling it MP).
Sanderson and similar autists write an explanation of why a game-like system exists without ever directly acknowledging it is a game system within the text itself.
LitRPG does nothing to hide the fact it is a game system with numbers, and often revels in the numbers(fans of the genre love looking at numbers more than words). They rarely go into detail of how the system works as far as what "MP" actually is the way sanderson said "you need metals in your bloodstream to use magic"

Web novels are often perceived as lower quality due to a combination of factors including the pressure to produce content quickly, a lack of editorial oversight, and a focus on quantity over quality. The online publishing format also encourages long-form narratives, which can sometimes lead to repetitive or underdeveloped plotlines and characters.

Well I'm about to figure out if the days of the first half of a fantasy book being Frodo painstakingly detailing how he packed for his trip is a thing of the past or not. I just added three pages of a necromancer killing some waterbender in broad daylight to chapter one, which previously was my only chapter without physical violence. Let’s see if it works out!

There you go anon. I was assessing whether to lower the next wordcount to boost thread participation since yesterday some anon said their average was 500 words, but I ultimately deemed it unnecessary because we should always aim higher than our average. As for that anon, my advice would be to treat writing as a mental gym where you're always striving to pick up heavier weights. Good luck.

Nope, because it would be damaging to define so much in stone this early. But I can share with you the blueprint.

The Mediterranean Ocean, like a lake, is bordered by three continents:

Chaotia to the north.

Lawfullia to the east (or west, depending on your perspective).

Naturia to the south.

In the center of the Ocean there us a subcontinental island called Euralia.

I get the appeal. I have it in my story kind of as a foil, or really just a comedic difference. The characters that I want to follow are from a world where they don't have any special moves or names, it's just combat to them. But they're in Wuxia China and everybody has crazy weird names for how they fight like Soaring Dragon Sword or more silly things.

Don't know what to say about the sudden torture scene inside a dream, it's quite off-putting to have one when we don't even know the reason or even care about. This is right at the start too, so you're telling your readers, so they could drop right at the start. Words are free and it makes the shock value is worthless.
Some weird world choices:
>The former person talked:
Wouldn't it be better to just say his name?
>The protagonist left his twin bed. Alan(...)
I think it would be better as "Alan left his twin bed. He(...), and try to make some choices impersonal "The bedroom was minimalist (...).
Too scatological, we don't need to know when people pee themselves or go for the morning shit.
There's one critic anon who's better at grammar and word choices than I am, so it may be better to let him chew this some.
>umaloucura35
Fucking huezils.
Rest of the story is quite mundane, did you want to fill a word quota? Your first chapter is probably the most important, you have to tell readers what your story does and why they should care, but all you have is that Alan is a lucid dreamer that tortures people with his imaginary friend while working as a developer.
Establishing a character routine may work in traditional novels, but web novels need to hook readers at the start, and this isn't doing it.
What is your outline? What do you want to do the story? Cook it for a while and write it in a way that leads readers to want to know what happens next.
What does Alan do in his dreams (beyond torture?), you could expand on it, let the mundane stuff for later, give us some of the meat, then later the potatoes.

what’s particularly magical about wuxia move names is that they have extremely grand names like “Golden Staff Beats the Dragon”, “Universe in the Sleeve”, “Heaven-Earth Shifting”, but are then described in such a mundane and regular manner that the contrast between name and actual move borders on farce.

for example, in a wuxia novel written by a chinaman you might read a move where the guy does a “Universe-Shifting Palm” and then the next sentence describes how after catching someone’s fist the character’s hand deftly moves on top of said fist to then perform a palm strike at the victim’s chest.

i think the same phenomenon happens in real life ancient chinese martial arts, along with everything else, which is an ancient chinese trend i suppose.

take for instance: the name for coconut in chinese translated to something along the lines of “treasure fruit” during the tang dynasty

i think it’s just chinese literary culture to make the often historical setting more authentic.

if you read ancient chinese travel guides or miscellanea you have to be careful not to take things literally, else you’d come to the conclusion that ancient china was a xianxia setting.

for instance, a dish from a song dynasty anecdote about a meal someone had at a hermit’s house is named “Jade Well Rice”. a grand name for what is essentially lotus root and seed steamed in rice.

Fuck that's a lot.
>the ai sloppa train really is killing discoverability
My vote is that SEA/India found out that you could make money from that, even if you're getting peanuts compared to established authors, that's a respectable amount in the third world.

I think we're still in the early wave personally, royalroad seems poised to be the major serial site for SFF, I bet it moves away from litrpg at least somewhat over the years. I think web fiction will continue to grow into the mainstream and RR naturally fills that role
So it's not ogre ogre. But if you want to catch the freebie early wave get your ass to work

I am a bit of an hypocrite as I'm an ESL in the third world, but the amount of english speakers in these regions getting access to the internet + AI is really making good content and conversations harder to find. Even if only 1/5 of India access the english speaking internet, for example, that's probably more users than the whole US.

>>24537556
I filtered out AI slop. The only problem is those periods of time when AI tools to identify AI output aren't good enough to detect all the AI output and people intentionally mislabel. Besides which, I've yet to see an AI that can put out a million word coherent and cohesive narrative. Sure, it can do paragraphs, but it lacks the capacity for larger, more complex cognition. See ClaudePlaysPokemon. It can't keep track of objectives for longer than a certain period of time. Or look at people using AI chatbots that purge themselves after a certain length of conversation and start over tabula rasa.

AI really does lack creativity. I don't think this is going to be such a serious problem in the near future as people imagine.

I can sort of get where you're coming from but at the same time not really. People are dumber than you give them credit for, they'll just think Alan is le quirky chungus and get bored if I don't introduce a hook at the very start.

>Wouldn't it be better to just say his name?
>>The protagonist left his twin bed. Alan(...)
>I think it would be better as "Alan left his twin bed. He(...), and try to make some choices impersonal "The bedroom was minimalist (...).
ty, I really struggle to put myself in other's shoes, so advice like this is invaluable.

>Too scatological, we don't need to know when people pee themselves or go for the morning shit.

Wrong, getting inserted into by another man is objectively gayer. The ancient greeks agree, don't bother them about it.

>>24537667
Do it man. Here's my routine:
>get 8 hours of sleep
>wake up, shower, turn on AC
>grab an energy drink, sit down at PC
>fire up some music, no vocals
>review yesterday's chapter for typos and consistency
(at this point I'm getting my first two dopamine hits of the day and I'm fresh and ready to go: caffeine and music)
>review plot outline for what needs to happen in this next chapter
>write for about two hours
>have a second energy drink as necessary
>stop when I've accomplished what needs to be done
If it's less than a thousand words, I review and see if I need to add more, or just merge it with the next chapter. If it's much over two thousand words, I look to see if there's a natural breakpoint I can use to keep the chapter length between one and two thousand words

I usually wake at 6, am writing by 7, and done writing between 8:30 and 9:30 AM. I can do this every day without burning out and I look forward to it because of the dopamine hacking. After writing I use up the rest of the caffeine focus by reading some harder books or go to the gym, and in the evenings I either veg out with anime or reading LN/WN.

And that's the mistake every autist or socially inept person in general always fucking makes when it comes to writing. They are characters, not social interactions. You wishing your characters to say things that are "normal" stems from your social inabilities and its consequences, not your inability to write dialogue or comversation. You are scaring yourself because you conflate the two things. They aren't the same. Characters say wild shit all the time without readers, even normie readers, backing off.

I make AI art for self-porn purposes. You’d be surprised at how autistic people react, you can seriously rustle some jimmies in the /co/ and /tg/ art threads by editing other people’s AI slop, or even just by using their “characters” or prompts. And if you go to deviantart? The entire site is now autistic slop hidden behind paywalls. I even toyed with the idea of making a patreon and I got some subscribers, but they were all heavily autistic individuals who kept begging me to make art of incredibly obscure cartoon characters

This isn't even unique to him: nearly everyone does it. I did it with my short story too. That's just how the norm is on RR. Time of day doesn't matter at all. In the past you'd update just before it hit 24hrs so people see more chapters from your fic updated on the front page.

Well, good luck. Don't get burnout. I hope you outlined at least.

My only gripe is lack of dialogue tags, too much enter key abuse in that regard as well in general. Em dash is alt+0151—there's no capitalization after em dash usage. I think there's a lot of big words you're throwing at the reader; something about the flow just seems so off in this regard. Tell a story like you're telling it to a truck driver but don't make it retarded kinda thing. I also notice a lot of periods after dialogue tags.

Your past tense seemed okay but there are some glaring errors.
>Just before reaching the large double doors of the bridge she slowed down, clothes obediently wicking up the sweat before straightening themselves
Could be reworded as
>Just before she reached the large double doors, she slowed down. The inner workings of her suit absorbed what figments of sweat produced from the exercise and recycled it into her drinking tube for later.
Or something of that effect.
>Ignoring her aching muscles she pushed the doors open.
Her muscles ached, but she suppressed the pain as she slammed the doors open.

Ignoring her aching muscles, she pushed the doors open.
The sentence is fine, it was just missing a comma to separate the clauses.

>In the far future, the stars belong to humanity-- but not the same humanity that left Earth. Gene editing, ideological drift, and technological augmentation have fractured human society into thousands of clades and cultural factions.
>To bridge this divide, a tradition endures: the Voyage. Adolescents are given a ship and sent into the unknown to prove their worth and bring back legacy.
>The Light of Calypso carries one such crew. Aboard it, the children of peace will encounter ruins of war, ideological echo chambers, ancient relics, and cultures that barely recognize them as kin.
>This is a story of discovery, diplomacy, and design -- where every encounter reshapes their future.
Good summary, I like the alliteration at the end. HOWEVER:
>>To bridge this divide, a tradition endures: the Voyage. Adolescents are given a ship and sent into the unknown to prove their worth and bring back legacy.
Humanity in all it's variety and diversity is united by a shared tradition of... giving teens a space ship and sent into space to fuck around and bring back children? Not, like, troublemakers who don't fit into the society they're born into, but just all teens? I haven't read the chapters yet but uhhhhhh what?

That premise is far out man. Also, isn't Calypso the witch that kept Odysseus from leaving her island for years while they were banging until the gods made her let him go? The allusion/reference there doesn't seem to quite fit, unless you have a plan for it.

You can do whatever you want at the end of the day my dear little rebellious chungus. Your backlog chapters you schedule (doesn't matter if it's daily, twice, thrice a week) are your buffer for the chapters you DO now have to write (live) and line edit, so you should be taking that time to hurry and keep a consistent upload schedule of whatever you want to go with after that initial wave of chapter drops, because once it's gone the weekly deadline is a very tight noose. This is why it's important to write before actually serialization and even outline (not just bullet points, but not world building either, like a detailed prose outline akin to a skeleton draft) so you're not scrambling in the sinking swamp forever until you burnout or die.

I feel like there's different levels (per week)
1: highly edited, long chapters, high quality
2: decently edited, long chapters, high or nearly high quality
3: variable editing, variable length, decent quality chapters
4: variable editing, variable length, decent to nearly decent quality chapters
5: low to mid editing, short to mid length, quality varies
6+: madmen or writing extremely repetitive rehashed plotlines (cultivation stories)

Personally I post every MWF no matter what, aiming for decent editing, consistent length between 1-2k words, nearly decent to decent quality chapters, and my overall plot moves as a steady pace for the most part. Something is happening almost every chapter. I could do better, and moving up to four chapters a week might make sense, especially once I finish writing the series in a few months.

>Not, like, troublemakers who don't fit into the society they're born into, but just all teens?
The culture is extremely long lived. With people rarely dying and thus opening up position it became common for young people to bounce as soon as they were able which eventually became formalized.
The voyage prevents stagnation and resentment and gives them a way to get a leg up.

>Good summary, I like the alliteration at the end.

You could find a niche, but web novels favor long, ongoing stories with constant updates, rather than slower ones. I can say that there's at least one that I read (A Chronicle of Lies) that is written in more of a traditional way, though it found it's niche in the scaly fandom.

I hope you aren't writing for the sake of making money on patreon. You should write first, and if the writing is good you will get a following. But I cannot recommend going on RR as a first time writer and posting your story with the expectation that people will pay to support it. A book at a store costs like twelve bucks, so at the very most I would pay a dollar a month to support a reader who has shown me nothing of note. Not trying to be a dick btw

Your grammar needs a lot of work, and there was a few points where you didn't quite finish editing, leaving big typos.

At one point you misspelled a character's name AS you were introducing the POV ([Ayra] should have been [Arya], no?)

I wasn't sure about the premise at first but you're making it work. Your characters are lovely, the multiple POVs worked well to give different views of the ship, and the setting out on an adventure was a decent hook. I will say, the prologue is more of a chapter one, and your chapter one is probably a bit too long. I would have split it up into multiple shorter chapters, but all together it works really well to give the full picture of the ship and crew working together, so it's also fine to leave as is. Just not how I would have done it.

My recommendations at this point would be to skim through "How to Write a Sentence," and to do a bit more editing for grammar and typos. Consider using shorter sentences with less clauses, although your longer sentences aren't that bad either: proper punctuation would just make them more clear, but that's harder than just simplifying the sentences in the first place. The book isn't that long, you can easily finish it in a day, and it'll pay off in spades.

Keep writing!

A ship setting out with a third less fuel than planned would be unthinkable IRL. instant mission scrub, investigation into not only where the fuel is, but how this could happen and the process that led to it being discovered at launch time. It's really under my skin. However, I know the premise is that humanity is more lackadaisical about this "adventure" exploration, so I'm just going to assume they're so far beyond post-scarcity they just don't really give a shit and feel things are more interesting this way. But that also clashes with the bit about finding the problem in the water system. Just something I'm thinking about.

Dude, that attitude towards general threads is fucking cancerous and r****t. Please stop. It's not a tragedy if the general falls off the board and nobody makes it again for a while. If you NEED persistent discussion, go to a regular forum where threads don't auto-delete. Generals on 4chan are more of a containment system, to keep people interested in one thing from spamming every other thread with it. But they can become cancerous and metastasize (see /vg/).

Yeah I was kinda forcing it with having them essentially start in massive debt. The idea is that antimatter is a complete shit show to produce and arguably The most important "generic" material resource. Each containment bottle needs extremely thorough inspection and someone in a really long logistics chain fucked that up. But yeah I getcha

>My recommendations at this point would be to skim through "How to Write a Sentence," and to do a bit more editing for grammar and typos
Will do.

>I will say, the prologue is more of a chapter one, and your chapter one is probably a bit too long.
Yeah I wanted to get out *something* and then the rest got super long.

>I wasn't sure about the premise at first but you're making it work. Your characters are lovely, the multiple POVs worked well to give different views of the ship, and the setting out on an adventure was a decent hook.
Damn that's everything I was hoping for and more.
Thanks a ton man.
Really means a lot to me.
