I don't think there is an easy answer to that because in the end the UI is not really related to the engine
The "engine" in the end is just the base code the game runs on. Z3 to 30 are all on the same "engine" even if they look different or have different progressions
For one, I would like to see an optimization on the way units, especially upgrades, are done. Up to 30 each "variation" had its own slot, and with variation I mean it literally: if a unit gains a new attack, or a new skill, or gets a small stat boost, in the code it's a completely different unit even if the player never notices it
Something like this could very easily be done with binary flags and would take way less space, especially if you consider the same also happens with the enemies

SRWJ has flags that get flipped when units unlock new attacks. However if you want to make a rebalance mod, its preferable when the units have multiple forms since you can do things like have super modes act as pseudo upgrades among other things, compared to Combattler/Voltes/etc being at full power from day 1.

Well as mentioned by people in earlier threads there are a couple of possible reasons for characters from post-plot series like Ulube (and others who died in their series) to make it in Y. DG Cells, Byston Wells, Y's still vague plot point about past and future colliding. Ulube is a welcome addition that could be a sgn that one of these things are happening and other characters might be showing up, like Scirocco.

I could see Scirocco coming back because Z and CCA are the only UC series in Y. There is no other UC series to pull b or c-listers to fill your extra UC suits, and no villains that can be behind Neo Zeon unless Char ends up being and unrecruitable villain (but both series should be post plot looking at the plot recaps for Y so that can't be true either). Characters like Emma or Four could also be used to fill the player roster, and we've seen the Hamrabi so it's likely Jerid will also be back together with Yazan
Now the real question mark is Seed. It's probably the series with the least amount of things shown so far. I remember to use heals/repair units and so on, but it's frustrating. Alt really doesn't appear to be really dodgy, it's not totally unable to move like Grungusts, but is in an awkward spot where it can only reliably dodge when choosing to evade instead of counter-attacking when Weissritter still can blast folks even with the risk of getting constantly one-shotted, not to mention Huckebein Gunner. It still hits hard, and Ramage Ghost is great, but it gets frustrating that every encounter with Axel ends up with facing multiple sub-50% chances of Alt getting nearly obliterated. At least I'm getting its upgrade soon. I can deal with most of the mooks, even with them beginning to have 10k+ HP. I'm mostly upgrading weapons, with most of the mechs having two or three upgrade points in each category, barring stand-outs like KoRyuOh or Gunner, maybe that's why I'm having trouble with hit/dodge rates.

At most you'd only ever need to upgrade 3 weapons on the average unit. 1-2 moves for grunt busting and whatever powers up your combo attack/finisher. When it comes to units themselves, trying to hard tank in OG2 GBA falls off hard after a while due to damage creep and enemy accuracy spiking. IIRC Confuse/Disrupt didn't exist in that one either, so you pretty much have to upgrade people's mobility and use optional parts to sure off the weak parts.
If you got Custom CPU/Hero's Mark/Soul of Steel, then spreading them across units like Alt who need a bit of everything is a good idea.

As for Rio, her best use is being Ryoto's partner in the Gunner. The permanent love bonus is a huge benefit for the thing's output but I usually just ignore the Huckebein secret because most of your deploy slots are eaten up by combo attackers, RKO and Lamia anyway, so some times I don't even bother bringing the MkIII to the final parts.

Thats more on the pilot stats than the Grungust itself honestly, you can get away with some bullshit if you throw a psychic pilot or someone like Lamia into the extra Grungust.

Whenever I play Kyosuke's route in OG1, I always beeline S Space for him because not doing so exposes his flaws very easily during his first half. In OG2's case, Alt might have S Land but so many pilots/units have it and enemies do so too, so his mediocre evasion creeps up on him fast. If you're not using Cybuster/Valsione, its generally good idea to let him use one of the Hero's Mark/Soul of Steel because Alt likes all of the bonuses (same for the Wurger). Sanger gets dibs on the Custom CPU.

The generic Bioroids having S everything is kinda bullshit but their actual stats aren't that crazy if you can even that out. And all the other factions grunts are chumps.
For named enemies its always just making sure you have Alert/Invincible or support defends going as usual.
If it's GBA OG2 then I guess Confuse doesn't exist so you can't abuse that, but otherwise its business as usual.

Thanks for the hints, I think I'm mostly doing the common sense stuff like focusing on the most commonly used attacks and combos and giving people equipment, but still screwing some small-to-medium things out. Like, I just realized that I left Custom CPT on Astelion just to push it to the "not-a-liability" level despite it being a filler unit when not forced.
As for Rio, I followed a guide on GameFAQs to replace her with Leona in Gunner, and I'm not complaining about the end result. I still occasionally use her as intended due to route splits.
