/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General
-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-=ARTILLERY GROUPBUILD=-

Build a mecha or vehicle that uses long-range heavy-weapons such as Cannons, Missiles/Rockets, Railguns, or any other type of siege weaponry. Some clarifying rules
>The weapon can either be placed anywhere on the build (Shoulder-mounted, under-slung, etc), or in a separate side-build (Such as an artillery system utilized by a larger mech).
>Side-builds can include things like howitzers, self-propelled artillery, missile platforms, and the like.
>Alternatively, the mech can act as a spotter, loader, or some other role to support Artillery fire.
>Despite technically being a long-range weapon, Sniper Rifles are a no-go.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

So the AK Woundwort has much better plastic and zero mold defects or fitting issues compared to the XFS version but good grief is it tight as hell, it makes me afraid something's going to snap every time I try to pose it.
Also a thing that irked me with the XFS Woundwort was that the torso slightly tilted to the left because of the D hole connection on the body. This issue is still present on the AK Woundwort but before bitching I decided to check reviews of the Bandai Woundwort and it turns out the problem is also there on the Bandai version as well. Huh.

unfortunately this part isnt really one you can glue back together. it has to be able to take some strain and there is so little nub to work with. I am not sure how it would work. I might try greenstuff and see if it holds. it's not a visible part within the frame so a quick and dirty fix might work here.

New vidar is already on the way, so the upside is that i've got a project kit for painting some day.

Weird, I know but I never actually used super glue on gunpla before. I've been using cement this whole time. Is there a brand like tamiya that's reliable for hobby stuff? The ones I've used IRL always come in little tubes and always get gunked up with flaky stuff so its a pain to use. Do those long nozzle things help with that?

I wouldn’t be sanding all the added bulk off, the purpose of smoothing it would be to get a better finish than just the Mr surfacer 500 and to shape the part a bit to stop it from looking like a blob

Exquisite analysis my friend. Perhaps I was too harsh on our decal anon…. Over 1 dozen full painted decaled zakus for less than 200 is a steal. Is there an easy way to know which kit is which? Do they share the same hguc model number? Does it label it with the revive label on the box?

>80 dollars in decals is nonsense
most waterslide sheets are anywhere from 2 to 10 bucks, so we'll just say if you only bought waterslides from them (they well other things too but don't let this stop you from being a smug dipshit) you could get yourself something like a couple dozen waterslides. Sheets aren't all equal so some of those are reusable, some aren't. You'd have enough for at least the same amount of kits as waterslide sheets.

If you've been in this hobby longer than a year you might realize it's both easy and useful to accrue things in bulk for projects. I've got over a hundred waterslide sheets at this point probably in a couple of ziploc bags, and I just pick through and take relevant decals from them. If you bought 80 bucks of waterslide decals you'll have decals for the next half a decade to pull from, easily, if not a whole decade. As an aside I probably buy like 40 bucks of waterslides a year, maybe more. Not to be a faggot, but it's ultimately not a lot of money for what you get.

I was mainly shitposting earlier because buying 80.00 worth of decals and getting free shipping is basically them saving you what should realistically be like 3.00. obviously if you are buying other stuff with physical mass that argument goes out the window. A decal sheet is like half the size of a normal piece of paper. Maybe a third. I don’t even know how many you would need to buy for it to weight a quarter of a pound. I’m pretty sure I was able to sell stuff on eBay and ship it to the guy for like 3.50 or something if it was that light.

Everything else aside if you can get enough use out of them it’s a good value though. It’s tough to find a good decal sheet for numbers though because many of them seem set up to only let you make one model. If you want a unit to have 3 number decals on it, and you want one to be number 01 and another to be 02 and another to be 03 etc most sheets seem to only give you 3 0’s and if you get more 0’s they are in a different size and don’t match. so you end up needing one sheet per model often times which seems like something they do on purpose.

After typing it out I’m starting to think the way you could maybe get more use out of it is for one decal sheet to make one unit number 01 and another unit something not using 01 like 23 or 32. So you would need to stagger out the numbers somehow which might be practical unless you are fine with a bunch of random numbered units and don’t need them to be sequential. Maybe that is a better approach because on one decal sheet you get

As for the grida, the pen-like chisel tip can probably fit into the same handles if you want to try that option. Madworks and dsipae offer decent quality hook-shaped chisels individually for $8-15 each, not sure if toolsets are available. If you download the program gimp which is free you can probably get things made just as good as this or not better. It doesn’t have a user interface which is as good as photoshop but for what you’re trying to do it’s more than sufficient. Last time I used photoshop was years ago so I have no clue what modern photoshop UI is actually like but I’m just going off my memory. For example if you make the robot its own layer you can go to the layer options in the bottom right side and scroll down how you want the layer to behave and you can turn it into grey scale. You can mess with the exposure and the light and shadows options to get this look. Hit it with a bit of a blur effect if you want it to look out of focus. use sharpen if someone gives you a picture that is a little too fuzzy. Lots of options. Powerful for a free tool but just takes time to learn. I would argue someone good with Gimp will make something better than an amateur at photoshop doesn’t matter if it’s free

Knowing bandai it's the same thing every time so soonish at least. They're incapable of actually telling what is popular or what would sell well and then under release a product. After it sells out immediately they scramble to try to keep up with demand while scalpers rape everyone. Then they put out a product that has no demand and no popularity and it sits on store shelves not being bought and they wonder why.

i bet printing schedules have at least an 12-18 month lead time. At least.

You gotta figure that they run their operation lean- meaning they have precise print numbers and calculations for everything. They have to source everything from the boxes themselves, the plastic bags the runners come in, the dyes, the plastics. whatever they make the molds out of from the master mold. It's probably a huge pain in the ass/impossible to jump the queue with extra printings of a hot kit.

Anonymous No.23353621 >>23353642

yeah, my guess is that they have a sort of production fastlane.

We know they have a maximum number of each special release- they probably order the maximum number of stickers/decals/boxes and destroy whatever isn't used since they cost pennies- then maybe order the dyes and plastics special.

The new pbandai preorders for all the different promo gundams this week ship a few weeks after preorder. This makes me think that this run is going to be extremely limited-not like the runs that ship 3 months after preorders close.

But I still believe that regular printings.themselves would be a massive undertaking. Imagine what it would cost just to warehouse all this.

>>23353602
>bandai is likely doing this in house but you don't sincerely think this is difficult do you?

why would they do that in-house? it would take them years, if ever, so see profitability from setting up those facilities when they could just get better quality for cheaper from a manufacturer. Imagine the costs (and space required) of maintaining and running your own print shop when you could order 10,000 mg barbatos instruction manuals for some obscenely cheap price.
Anonymous No.23353636
Bought pic rel on a whim. Havent done gundams or anything non 40k/mini painting related in a long time. I was thinking a purple scheme or maybe a red would look cool. But it looks like it has a lot of moving parts, and im not sure how to approach that. With gundams you can just do the main colors armor panels and leave the joints mostly alone. The last zoid I did was the gun sniper raptor with the fuckload of guns. I didnt really paint the raptor, just a fuckload a detail work on the guns.
Anonymous No.23353642 >>23353682

>why would they do that in-house?
because it's cheap as hell and the more you out source the bigger the potential for catastrophic failures becomes along with delays. Smarter every day recently put out a great video on the challenges of manufacturing a product - his stated goal was to get something made in America entirely. While it doesn't represent bandai's challenges it is a nice parallel to give you an idea of what you have to deal with when you outsource. If you want another example a local business making charging handles recently had to deal with the manufacturer (some American machine shop) promising him a date when the product would be finished and delivering 4 months late.
>Imagine what it would cost just to warehouse all this.
Dirt cheap when you own the warehouses and ship enough product that the shipping companies offer you a fraction of the cost of shipping and/or the cost of temporarily storing and then moving the product is made up for by the revenue it brings in.

you're not getting a better quality product for cheaper by printing in house. I can promise you that. You're absolutely going to a manufacturer that prints millions of pages a week.

I can't speak about supply shortages- I am not sure what sort of supplies that bandai needs for their own manufacturing processes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVHI7nKMqlE&ab_channel=GundamInfo this is an older video and doesn't show all the Bandai factory but it seems really hard to believe that they also operate their own print shop. Maybe Bandai owns a print shop within the broader company that they order from(that also takes orders from third parties), but I just have a hard time believing that they alone would be able to supply a printer with enough work to justify it's own existence.

that looks about right, BANDAI SPIRITS Co., ltd and BANDAI NAMCO Group ARTPRESTO Co., Ltd. will interact with each other like two separate corporate entities. It's not really the definition of "in-house" other than they are both wholly owned(guessing) subsidiaries that bring value to the same shareholders.

I meant supply shortages like your reference. One of the biggest problems in manufacturing is that it's obscenely expensive to own/operate each stage of the process and very rarely would it even be a profitable endeavor. My guess is that your example was a guy ordering low (relative) quantities of parts from small time manufacturers. These things smooth out over time and with scaling.

A good example of this is medicine, sometimes medicine will touch 3 or four continents before it reaches your hands. Sometimes finished drugs are shipped to other continents just so they can package them and ship them back to you. it all depends on laws and regulations.

You are obviously derailing from the topic i'm talking about here, typical faggot behavior. What i'm talking about is how Real Grade kits don't look realistic. They look like another pixiv tier fanfiction.

If you think that looks bad imagine what it would look like if bandai "sculpted wear" into the kit itself

It would again, look like a chew toy

RGs are already the overall worst line, and that guys retarded take on how to "improve it by not appealing to the normies1!!1!1!11" would make it even worse

God, 2.0 is so ass. You gotta give it to other RGs, they are at least more subtle with the "inner frame poking through armor" gimmick. Here it feels like a parody shitpost /gpg/ would make

Nobody is derailing the topic, anyways if you spent less time bitching over how Bandai's plastic model line doesn't look like an actual robot with fully functioning metallic parts and heavy armor on 4chan you would've had one customized by now

"Typical faggot behavior" is what you call complaining about bandai (the company that doesn't do shit) not doing shit, because they only want to appeal to "le normie"

If you wanted a realistic model that badly you'd save up and buy a PG

The fact of it is it's never going to actually look like a real giant robot, wanna know why?

Because it's not one, it's a small plastic robot

Keep in mind most of the "realistic detail" comes from those shitty little stickers that don't even blend in with the surface colors

That is why the "sense of scale" term is applied. Sure it is a tiny plastic toy, but you have to make a diorama to make an illusion and sometimes weathering, battle damages, etc if your build is to create a war machine. It is understandable that not everyone around here can pull it, the sources to make things like these are very costly.
My question toward RG is that, for something Bandai boasts about "realistic", they don't look realistic. It is the same toyetic designs, doesn't look smooth and stylish enough to pass a sport cars and doesn't look ultitarian enough to pass as a war machine. And as i said above, to morph a RG kit into something gritty and brutal, it will take alot of money and resources to be made possible. If Bandai named it as something like " High Grade Plus" or " Advanced Grade", it would be much more appropriate name.
