bandai's target is continually getting new fans in on gundam to keep the audience from dying out, they're less worried about longtime fans so nostgalia projects usually revolve around things like unicorn that references old material, or adapting older material like hathaway
I mean, you hear bitching about wanting 2d animation again on /m/, but that's not really a thing with today's mainstream audience. new animation projects are rarely about trying to match the look of older stuff. look at other old anime franchises and stories that have gotten continuations or sequels. ain't noone bitching about the latest dragonball, yamato, ranma, or whatever the fuck anime not looking exactly how they did decades ago
and no, complaints about bad animation does not automatically mean they want old style animation, especially if they stop bitching when the new animation doesn't have any deficiencies (low budget, poor storyboard, bad editing, lack of passion, etc) for them to bitch about
