Is there some sort of soft pity system in the rolls? Most of the UR's Ive got (from limited or normal banner) come in clusters of 2-4. If I get a UR, it's typically a few of them. I think I've only ever gotten a single UR once or twice.

A lv100 attacker UR can carry you through a battle easier than an even spread of lv40s for early-mid game. Finishing a series nets you 1k gems and unlocks the hard stages which only have a daily skip limit of 3 each, plus they offer better rewards than normal stages. Hard stages have an optional secret boss but you can clear secret boss then go back to clear 3* without triggering it, and the skip will give you the additional secret boss rewards (or done vice versa)

You could borrow merlin and just use waver just fine. I'd know, it's what I did(or I ran double waver with Scathach if divine). You are far more bricked today without Castoria and Tamamobitch and Oberon and a good high NP level looper(ideally one with multicore compatiblity) than you were if you missed out on Merlin. I maxed Aquarius myself and have a few others at the second rank. They're all pretty useful on any stage their series bonus comes into play. NPCs are your friends. Bring some physical range damage units with +1 range pilots to deal with the underwater units if you don't want to waste EN using EX moves every attack.
Turn 1: pick off as many as you can while letting the NPC clean the rest. You don't really have to move much.
Turn 2: move upwards, kill of the center NPC on the island if you have no space to walk on.
Turn 3: repeat step 1 while moving upwards.
Turn 4: Kill em all. NPCs don't activate no more.
