After putting it off for years for no particular reason, I decided to watch Eva. Having finished it, I had a question about the infamous fanbase this show has. Why is the fanbase the way it is, constantly arguing if Shinji should hook up with either Rei or Asuka? The show itself has no major focus on romance beyond when it comes to talking about Shinji's sense of self-worth and so on. Is it something the movies introduce?

They're not. Shinji isn't typically a part of the discussion, and in the rare case that he is, it's almost always an extremely thinly veiled case of self-inserting anyway

You missed out on watching Eva during it's original airing in the 1990s, and the context of the era. Back then it was groundbreaking and nothing else like it had been made.

No. The intense popularity of the show, the character writing, and how groundbreaking it was...played a large part in fueling the waifu arguments for so long.

You had people arguing which girl was prettier, who had the better personality, who was a better pilot, who matched better with Shinji, etc. Rei, Asuka, Misato, and even side characters like Ritsuko and Hikari had their supporters.

Again. This was only possible in the 1990s. It was the perfect storm. If the same thing was attempted today, it wouldnt have the same effect at all on the anime fandom.

A lot of people watched this when they were teenagers, and while for some that was when they were going through tough times and didn't know who they were and felt like life was hopeless, for others it was being horny and imagining being surrounded by two teenage girls who were naked every once in a while. Those are the ones who complain about Shinji being a pussy and probably prefer the earlier episodes.
I also caught this show pretty late, what stuck with me was Misato's struggles as an adult. Feeling in debt to her father, feeling like filth while also having tons of responsibilities, constant drinking. Most fans just talk about her being mommy, because most of them were way younger than her.

Arguing over waifus is so fundamental to evangelion that the creators did it. It's a mixture of both. Who would be better for Shinji emotionally mixed with who fans liked more.

The soft, gentle, and quiet understanding of Rei.

Or the loud assertiveness of Asuka that pushes Shinji apply himself more.

Remember that during the 90s, nothing like Evangelion had been done before. There was never an anime that had such different emotional women fighting for the main character. Evangelion sparked a generation of Eva clones and anime that copied that multiple female leads idea. Now today having multiple female leads is pretty standard because of Evangelion.
