so I have the Kurofune not-EZ8 and it's a really cool kit and all but I almost feel like a huge asshole for not painting it

You have nothing to gain by being a Bandai white knight. Some chang kits even fix problems from the original Bandai kits and you also get more accessories. For example, the chink HG Gundam ground type fixed the shit waist connection from the original kit and you get extra saber effect parts with it, a curved one, waterslide decal sheet and a stand base. It's literally better than the original and I paid less than half the price for it. I'm not saying all chang kits are superior, but you're wasting money and getting less if you blindly buy Bandai only just to be loyal to the brand.

F91 has 3 incredibly strong sequences at the beginning and end, and the stuff in the middle is not so bad it's just far-too-fast paced dialogue scenes. Iron mask is also unintentionally hilarious without being frustrating or nonsensical. The mech design is also 10/10. It's a quality production even without considering the extreme limitations set on them.

If you're using acrylics, you should also buy a primer. They sell it in spray cans. The primer will make it so your paint actually sticks to the plastic.
Make sure you have a means of separating your parts and masking them so you only get the colors you want on the appropriate parts.
Once you're done painting, then you can spray a topcoat on there to protect your paintjob. Matte is the most commonly used but you can use whatever you like.
It's entirely possible to paint your model with just a regular brush, and you won't have to fiddle with masking tape if you don't want to. For that, you have to make sure you thin your paints (acrylics can be thinned with just water) and use a nice flat brush for those broader surfaces on gunpla. A second, smaller brush with a fine point is nice to have for smaller details.
Whichever method you pick, be sure to practice on spare plastic like your leftover runners.

You need to shake paint bottles to mix the pigments with the medium. Paint naturally separates over time, so it can end up being too thin, forcing you to do multiple uneven coats, or too thick and chalky(pic related). I have Light Cannon, Xavier Gyan and Police Zaku. This is probably the skinniest incarnation of Zaku so far. Gyan has ectomorph body proportion, its chest and waist have the same ratio, it has huge clown shoes, too. Such a fucking abomination.

I have most of them besides the zaku and I never fully put the lightcannon together. Articulation is very good for the skinny ones and the fat ones have the drawbacks that you'd expect. I know they're contentious and I know that some people just want more boilerplate gundam designs but I think they have a lot of individual design cues that are interesting and fun to paint, even if the final designs don't really come together well. Stuff like the sort of rollbar protection parts around sensitive parts, visible piping, integrated fuel tanks. I think there's a lot of cool mechanical design ideas
