Best to consider Girls Garden its own thing. There's a couple people from anchor still around like Tashiro Hayato and Matsumura "Tororo" Kazutoshi, but the company itself isn't credited with involvement. The director who unlike the fat fuck actually played the trilogy said he considered it self contained. I've seen posts that Muvluv should've ended there from time to time, but it's the first time I saw someone with some actual authority echo the sentiment. While it would've been great if age understood that after 2006, or avex when they bought the IP, better now than later.

I watched the first few missions of the game on the channel – via the links above – and my impressions are mostly positive.

The prologue is clearly AH, although it's unclear why. That is, yes, the West won the Cold War back in the 1970s thanks to the space elevator – apparently there won't be a Soviet TSF branch – but this had no impact on the fight against the BETA. Mercenaries, as a narrative tool, may be good, but it's unclear how exactly their legal status is formalized.

The action takes place in 1995, in Southeast Asia. Considering that, according to canon, in 2001, humans hold only a small foothold at the southern tip, either humans will be able to defend these lands because of AH, or players will witness a monumental defeat. Again, the player's employer is the Asian Alliance, meaning that after the USSR's defeat in the CW, the local states didn't join the prosperous and victorious West, but formed their own organization—I wonder why? (By the way, was the Vietnam War even mentioned here?)

Visually, everything is excellent. Some complained about the AI for portrait generation, but in my opinion, they turned out quite well. The girls are diverse and attractive—and there's definitely a trend for decorative eyeliner (are they imitating Chisa?). The guys are a bit worse, as there are two distinct types of male characters: pleasant, intelligent guys in glasses under 30 and stern, bald guys around 40. (Or so far, that's mostly what I've seen.)

Character and TSF customization is harmonious, for lack of a better term. There are some oddities, of course—only four types of mech equipment, depending on their role (even though the MLA had a ton of squad "positions"), and weapons can be loaded to overload (six autocannons with four hardpoints). The TSFs themselves don't seem to have the ability to replace parts, but they can replace/upgrade their equipment, software, and weapons, improving the vehicle's combat capabilities. Pilots hone their skills and techniques to suit their tactical roles, and they can also set up team attack sequences with other squad members, which is cool.

The combat is purely tactical. A turn-based system, with four fighters distributed across the map during battle, each with their own designated attack/defense/action type. Attacks can be single or team-based, and each weapon type has a cooldown period, allowing for a wide variety of attacks. Even long-range units carry knives, so they can defend themselves in close combat. There are no specialized long-range or heavy weapons yet, but you can experiment with close-combat combinations like "dual swords" or "sword and shield." Swords are fun to play with – potential options include Rafale falcatas and Eurofighter Greatswords, although they haven't yet entered service in 1995.

The maps feature hills or walls that block Laser-class attacks, as well as auxiliary allied units...in the form of regular cannon tanks (why not the Shilka-type?) for local troops. The BETAs vary, from swarms of Tanks to massive, solitary Forts. A couple of attack types and a fairly standard behavior – the aliens prefer more advanced vehicles in attack (at a certain range) and will always choose a TSF over a tank or container. Containers are useful, but it's a gamble, as you never know what's inside and how useful it will be to the TSF that opens them. Therefore, there's a "cargo" gameplay mechanism that allows a TSF player to carry extra ammunition/fuel/spare parts, etc. Field repairs are standard in the game.

There's no voice acting, and the dialogue between the heroes and other characters is presented as comic book icons in a messenger, so to speak. Overall, it's pretty good.

Translator anon here. Thanks for this--I actually got the TE LNs all the way to 6 but didn't have the TG material. So far, I'm done translating everything till v3, and I must say, I think the VN cut off quite a bit. There's pages and pages of what you might call 'infodumps' filling up my entire screen, none of which made it to the visual novel... probably to make it more palatable. Teito Moyu is also much more dense, at around 500 pages. I'll be sure to append the TG content into their respective volumes as a bonus short story once I get to them.
Right, I'll add that I got the original trilogy novelization too, and some scans of Schwarzesmarken up to v6. The former's great, the latter not so much. See pic related. They've got official epubs with cleaned out illustrations and everything. Well, inoculating that into my arsenal would be a boon and much more preferable, specially since v7 has a special edition with artwork et al, so if you've got copies, do please share. Same with the TSFIAs.

Now, I would've completed TE sooner... except I got sidetracked with another series.... which I'm admittedly still in the middle of translating... It'll take a few more days till I'm done with it (´・ω・`)
That said, I'm quite taken by the temperance of Kouki's writing. Compared to it, his is lightning fast, and all of v1 & v2 feel as if they were written in 1 sitting, in absolute deathly concentration.

The BETA are just a really lame enemy. EDF is fun because the enemies are so huge you can actually manage the whole battlefield at once, like using the horizontal line gun to blow the whole front backward from a kilometre away, or hiding behind curves of hills and buildings from an absurd army of giant with gatling guns. It takes a surprisingly clever concept and flips it on its head to be terrible in all the ways EDF is good, for the enemies to be smaller than you. You'll spend most of the time shooting at your feet. Grapplers come across as really scary but their whole concept doesn't work in the abstract way an action game works so they just become like the shittiest asset flip zombies that drift toward you and deal damage on contact.
I honestly think the simple mech-battle VN sequence at the start of Extra was a great idea and a whole MuvLuv game focusing on combat instead of character moments with the first-person cockpit graphics they made and reading-comprehension style decisions and hard choices with no right answer in a game with multiple heroines and branching paths would restore the threat of the BETA and inject life into the series but it will NEVER happen. Like, just lemme play a hive assault and click a decision every now and again. I'd love that.

The MLA anime ED (and maybe the OP) in Season 1 does not make any sense with the tone and beat, unless they were made for Unlimited.
Even the visuals (the 207b chilling, doing menial things) goes just perfect for the later part of Unlimited.
