Tell the Japanese to stop being spergs then. The TL got this spelling from Japanese sources, it didn't just occur to him as a better romanization. The English name devised by the staff is Leechers Army Merowlink, all merch and even signs in the show spell the name as Merowlink. The only people renaming anything are the guys who wrote that one fanzine in the 80s that spelled it Mellowlink that the entire English world got the name from.

Of all of the absurdly petty and autistic things a translator could get hung up on, this is honestly not so bad (relatively easy to put a second version out with the more common rendering of the name, as opposed to some guy getting a bug up his ass about the actual substance or meaning of stuff in the script)

the translator is the same translator doing ippatsuman, he does good work, hence why we couldn't drop him from this project that he started over some naming autism. i don't know why everyone's freaking out now when this has been the case for the previous two batches as well, ironically i predicted all of this drama and tried to use it as an argument for why we shouldn't die on the merowlink hill, but i obviously got ignored. i offered to compromise and call it Marrowlink, but honestly that'd just make more people mad, this is obviously very contentious.

I've talked to the TL about this and heard his reasoning first hand. I was skeptical of it, but he's absolutely correct in that this is the proper spelling as intended by the original creators.

Both soundtrack albums have the name in English letters, as "Leechers Army Merowlink"
https://vgmdb.net/album/52641
https://vgmdb.net/album/52613

The official Japanese Votoms website spells it as that
https://www.votoms.net/about/05.php

The Takara Tomy "Leechers Army Merowlink with Action Bike" action figure spells it like that
https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c1171497653

JP Wikipedia has the Leechers Army Merowlink name, with a note that Armor Hunter is a more direct translation
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A9%9F%E7%94%B2%E7%8C%9F%E5%85%B5%E3%83%A1%E3%83%AD%E3%82%A6%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF#%E7%94%A8%E8%AA%9E

Even his dogtag in the animation spells out "Merowlink" in Astragius alphabet (aka Latin letters but weird) - picrel

You can find this spelling weird because the English speaking world has been using Mellowlink for over 3 decades now, but it's how it's spelled in Japanese sources, and I'm not currently aware of any other Sunrise IPs where an official spelling like this is not used, even when the JP part of the name is completely different.

For an analogy, imagine for a second that someone called Evangelion "Ebangerion" in a fan magazine and people ran with it, never having seen the show. Would the guy insisting on "Evangelion" be the sperg? No, he has plenty of sources, including the show and a slew of official material, to prove him right.

Enjoyed your batches when I realized that the other one stopped subbing the episode previews, but watched the rest of the previews with foreign subs because I couldn't wait. Thank you for the release regardless, I'm glad there's both options for the name, I get his reasoning for sticking with the weirder name that existed in other works, but am grateful that we have an option for the more natural-sounding Mellow also.
>why do you care about the episode previews so much
Because a friend is narrating it, and I feel it's important to the show because it's essentially his monologue on what Mellow's about to deal with next

He all but spelled it out, but didn't want to lose the otherwise decent translator. So there's the subtitles with the strange name, and an included set of subtitles that has the horrible fake and wrong name that the guy hates. I think that's a pretty small compromise, we got better subs and just have to make two mouse clicks per episode (I don't know how to change the settings on MPC)

That very mega is linked in the nyaa comments of some random Raideen releases. Also the subs are still the same old shit, ARR and everything, which is probably why nobody uploaded it separately. The release on AB with Hulu video also doesn't fix the colorspace issue. I'd rather try and get star back on Raideen once Dragonar is done (it's rapidly progressing through QC rn) than upload incrementally less dogshit muxes.

There's a difference between Engrish and made-up names.
Merowlink is a made-up name. It's not related to any real word, much less an English one, as far as anyone can tell. "Mellow" is just a guess by some university student in the 80s who ran a fanzine. Tim Eldred had the name as "Melorink" for the longest time, before switching to Merowlink. For these kinds of names, you have to either go with the Japanese and what they tell you, or, when there is no reliable source, figure out what you think is most likely. That usually doesn't apply to show titles though, especially Sunrise keeps those consistent. It's more of an issue for obscure mecha or side characters. For Sunrise original shows, specifically, we always use the staff-provided romanization. Unless you want to tell me Vifam is a real word and anyone but the original creator can tell you how it's spelled.

In this case, the Japanese are 100% consistent. It's always Merowlink, be it in the show (his dogtag was designed to be in the OP, they definitely did not typo on that), on the DVD box, on merchandise, in the art book, on the official website, on fucking Wikipedia. It's as official as Char, and as official as Chirico as opposed to any other romanization of that name (Kiriko is a girl's name btw). The show never getting licensed is what makes this "argument" even real. Sunrise would insist that the show is called Merowlink in its English release, maybe even Leechers Army Merowlink (though they have been lenient with bynames in the past).

Even as a made up name it sounds better to my ear if its comprised of recognizable sounds. Merow just sounds like engrish, its unnatural or at least it doesn't sound like something a native english speaker would come up with. Mellow and Link are both english words I can in my brain accept his name means something like 'softly joined' or 'calm coupling', maybe his parents had really slow low-intensity sex, all I get from Merowlink is nips can't into L and R.

The script has been extensively revised (it wouldn't have taken the better part of four years otherwise), so chances are the line you're thinking of has already been edited.

>>23583987
Sorry, I only use official romanization.

>>23584033
For the record, I don't think Mellowlink is a terrible guess (it wouldn't have stuck around for so long otherwise), but that's like saying Zabungle (or maybe even The Bungle, adjusting for the Engrish za) is a good guess for Xabungle.
The メロウ in his name can in fact mean mellow, but it's also homophonous with 女郎, meaning "bitch". Whether either of that was done intentionally, who knows. Ryousuke Takahashi seemed to think it was a "sweet name", but whether that's just because of how it sounds in Japanese, or because of the English meaning of part of the name is anyone's guess. Even if it was because of the English though, it would be quite like Takahashi to obscure it like he did with Votoms, which he has confirmed derives from and carries the meaning of "bottom of the barrel". And nobody's campaigning to change that name to "Bottoms" or something like that.
Merow is a bit unusual in English, but we do have the Merovingians, royal dynasty of the Franks, carrying a very similar name in Western Europe, and other names and terms containing mero.

Here are some cool interviews regarding the show and its production, though that one comment by Takahashi is the only thing regarding the name.
