/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General
-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.
START - 8/12/25
END - 11/30/25

The gloss has a lot of imperfections in it that necessitate it being made matte, or even semi gloss. I wasn't too concerned with it being absolutely perfect since I didn't intend it to stay too shiny.
I may just take the time to work out the imperfections in the paint though. Most of them are from the shine red being a far worse paint than the red madder.
I'm glad you're starting to see my vision with the blue frame.

I can't seem to find Mr Surfacer 1500 in white anywhere in the US besides on Amazon for $20 for a 40mL. Should I just use Gray instead? Or hope the Aqueous white can hold up to lacquers on top?
Kit in question is the F91. White would be for the White/Yellow/Orange parts. I was already planning on Gray for the blue as I had to sub a paint for a lighter hue version already.

another issue I encountered is the silhouette of the knight that goes in the left armor

the piece has that little engraving in the armor so you could use paint to make it stand out, however, none of the red paints I have are bright enough to my liking and there is also the fact the engraving is so small and the lines so thin, paint did not flow as expected neither I got a satisfactory result for my liking

you can use the decals then, right? kinda, save for the fact the decals of the kit are slightly larger than the engraving so it ends up looking a bit off

I'm glad you see what I was thinking now. It's loosely based on the original art of the sazabi since it had a bluish frame. The 2000 master grade also has a blue frame.
Shame I blew through half a jar of the metallic blue on this. I'm out of it so now the guns are gonna have to be a different color. I'm thinking of using some mystery metal I made by dumping leftovers of every metallic color I mixed into one bottle.

Hey, I need some guidance. I’ve been thinking about getting into airbrushing, but honestly, I’m scared I’ll mess things up badly. I have zero airbrushing experience, but when I was in Japan about a year ago, I bought a bunch of lacquer paints, painting tools, and an airbrush. It was kind of an impulse buy since where I live, paint imports are restricted and supplies like that are hard to find.

Now I’m wondering, should I invest more money to get the rest of the gear I need to start (like an air compressor, and probably a dehumidifier since it’s tropical and humid here)? It feels like a bit of a hassle. Or should I just call it quits and try to sell the airbrush?

No one in my local Gunpla circle airbrushes; they all use spray cans. So if I go ahead, I’ll have to figure things out entirely on my own through trial and error. Is airbrushing hard to learn? Like, can someone reasonably figure it out after a few tries, or do you really need hands-on guidance from someone experienced?

Would really appreciate your input here.

Everybody starts somewhere, and pretty much nobody does a perfect job on their first try. If you're going to learn to airbrush, you should start with a cheap HG kit that you won't miss if you screw up. Treat it as your practice kit.

Beyond a compressor and dehumidifier, other things you'll need to consider are:

Bunch of jars for storing mixed/thinned paint
Cleaning/sprayout pot
Set of glass eye droppers with detachable rubber bulbs (more economical than repeatedly buying plastic pipettes)
Spray booth
Respirator (rated for Organic Vapor, and 100% of particulate matter)
Shitloads of alligator clips
Masking tape (Tamiya is the gold standard)
100mL latch lid jars (pipette your hardware store lacquer thinner from a much closer source instead of opening up the can every time)

I started out practicing with water and food coloring. It's so cheap it's practically free, and I got practice breaking down and reassembling my airbrush to clean it. Like you I had no one around to teach me so I airbrushed paper, cardboard, and paper towels to get a feel for how it handled, then I tried airbrushing my paints onto cardboard seeing how it acted and what thinning I needed. Honestly, I felt like it would be a long, arduous process across a few weeks but I became confident in an afternoon and the next day I threw paint on a kit without problems. The first tip with base colors is to don't start or stop spraying while aiming at the kit (a lot comes out at the beginning or it may spit, and at the end extra comes out and it may spit), second tip is that you shouldn't really be full throttling the paint back, air maybe, but not paint. Lastly, do a quick google on what people who use your paints prefer PSI-wise on their compressor. I end up using 18 for my paints based on how I thin them if that helps with a starting place if you can't find others' advice.

It was my first bad customer service experience in Japan, everything up to that point had been great. Not sure why he was so rude. In retaliation, I stole a bunch of paintbrushes, some gaia notes paints, a godhand nipper (not the expensive one sadly) and a couple of godhand sanding sticks. one thing that i leanred about DSPIAE power tools is that while they're cheaper than the more professional brands, their effectiveness is usually inferior. their rotary tool easily gets stopped with lighter pressure while David's are as effective as the power drills. that airbrush is easily hampered by its weak compressor and the feeding bottle doesn't look like it can handle heavy paints like Polyurethane or lacquer. All following figures are in USD.

I'm honestly not sure how much a dehumidifier would cost, but a compressor would usually be around $50-100 depending on the model.
The air hose and any possible adapters will probably add another $10-15 on top of that, do your research to see what kind of threading your airbrush uses.
Paint jars and alligator clips should be pretty cheap, you can probably spend a total of like $70 for everything you need in that department.
A sprayout pot should cost anywhere from $8-15, it's something you can afford to cheap out on.
Eye droppers will probably cost you like $8 for a set of twenty, just look for something on Amazon in 1-2 mL range. Again, you can just buy disposable plastic pipettes, but I'm personally more environmentally-friendly and stick to reusable droppers (which also have other household uses, a bonus).
Spray booth is probably the most expensive item on this list, likely in the range of $100-150 for a decent Chinesium model. You can build your own spray booth from a box fan, taped-together cardboard, cheap tube and aquarium filter, it'll probably cost half that at most so do your research.
Respirator is something you definitely don't want to cheap out on, it's literal life or death and saves you from health problems later down the road. I bought mine for around $60, depending on your country that might be more difficult to find.
Masking tape is not cheap at around $4 for a roll, but you definitely want to buy hobby grade stuff rather than using household masking tape.
A latch lid jar (make sure it's glass and not plastic) runs around $5 for one, it's more of a convenience buy than a necessity but since it doesn't cost much/anything it's worth it. You could even repurpose a glass jar from around the house, just make sure it's decently airtight.

a tanked air compressor with a good psi will run 50-100 dollars. you can go cheaper, but tankless compressors are really not as good.
>airbrush
12 dollar ali express airbrushes won't last long but will get you started
an iwata or badger will cost 75-125 dollars
>other tools
airbrush cleaning brushes, sprayout jar (sort of optional), old toothbrush
hose and regulator (if your compressor did not come with these)
>consumables
flow improver, airbrush cleaner (I don't know what this stuff is... like a mix of solvents and detergent)
nylon gloves, plastic cups, newpapers
lubricant (machine oil or gun oil work well)

gunpla communities really like enamel and lacquer paints but with enough PSI you can blast just about anything out of your airbrush. Glow in the dark paint? Pearlescent paint? Texture paint? Apple barrel craft paints?

>airbrush outside. as long as it's not raining it makes a lot of things easier

humidity shouldn't be an issue as most regulators have a water trap to remove water from the pressurized air before it reaches the airbrush
dust could be an issue if the air is exceptionally dusty, but I've never personally seen it be a problem
in most places air quality tends to actually be much worse indoors because most people aren't running air filter units when cooking, cleaning, taking a shit, etc, so it's no different indoors

the biggest issues with painting outside are weather, light, and nosy neighbors

Different anon, but this is something you'll want to think very carefully about.

Generally, you want to aim for about 60-65% humidity while painting, it doesn't need to be a desert. In terms of weather, wind and dust are your enemy, you'll want some sort of covered area you can quickly move your pieces to after painting them. This could be as easy as a taped-together cardboard box with a curtain in the front. Paint, move into box, close curtain when you're done, transfer indoors.
Anonymous No.23606449 [Report]
>>23606444

I guess I should mention as well
when I say that I've never personally had dust be a problem, I have a covered patio in a place that doesn't get super dusty except in the driest parts of summer, where quickly hosing the ground is enough to eliminate any dust for a few hours. If you live in a very windy or dusty place that is more exposed, or it rains a lot, your experience may be different.

3d printing outside is another story. I've done this plenty but have very mixed opinions about it.

PGs are basically massive MGs, at least the older ones are. Usually you get some extra gimmicks like maintenance hatches and opening parts on the armor, or in cases like the MK-II you get a crazy detail internal frame. Some kits like the PG Exia are in a league of there own though; in fact, the PG Exia is the best kit of the suit as a whole.

PGU is basically "let's cram absurd amounts of detail into this large inner frame (picrel), make the external a mostly refreshing take on the original design, and then charge hundreds of dollars for it"

PGU is quite the step above regular PG, I'm just malding over the Nu being 700 fucking dollars WITHOUT LEDs

How are the 1/100 kits? I know they aren't as complex as MG but some MS have only got kits on that scale.

theyre ok. I mean its miles better than a dingy 90s or the seed 1/100s.

but yeah, if you got a taste of the Barbatos MG or Vidar MG, it makes the FM1/100 feel like shit. but the 1/100 is fine

For the most part, nobody cares how you want to build your gunpla.
Unless of course you paint really terribly, like very noticeably thick uneven paint or something like that. Or you don't even bother to sand the nubs.
