Due to the crossover between Trek alums and MLP, this is a safe place to discuss characters like Grand Pear and Discord.

I think the original series holds up better than Lost in Space and similar tripe, but it's still not very good. I still need to watch TNG and the later stuff, but I'm expecting it to be much better.

It could have been done with less cynicism. Think about The Trouble with Tribbles, or Data's Day, or The Magnificent Ferengi. Lower Decks is a bit too cynical for that. The SNW comedy episodes, like the Vulcan Hijinks ones or the crossover, hit the mark more closely. LD seems like a changeling (MLP) trying to copy that tone and just bring a bit off.

STTNG, and a selection of regulars (Picard, Data, Troi, and Barclay) are in a shuttlecraft when they hit a spatial anomaly, and after some brightly-colored swirling chaos, they find themselves in the MLP dimension, and have to try to figure out how to get home. Picard is irritated by the superfluous fluff, Data is fascinated but utterly unable to comprehend, Troi is overwhelmed by all the positive feelings, and Barclay tries to fuck ponies, despite not able at first to tell the males from the females. Barclay's actions set off a wave of jealousy, as many of the pony girls (like ethnic girls in our world) apparently prefer white men over pretty much any other option. In the end, the ponies figure out how to return the Enterprise crewmembers to their own world, to rid themselves of the chaos they brought. The last scene in the MLP world is of one of the pony girls feeling a little ill, then asking plaintively whether it's possible for a human to impregnate them.

TOS is like a Western. it is very 1960s but fun. The closest modern sci-fi to TOS is Stargate SG1, although Strange New Worlds is trying its hardest to get that vibe.
TNG is where most people start. The first two seasons are unused TOS scripts. So you won't miss much.
Speaking of Westerns, a good way to crossover MLP and Trek is to remove the sci-fi, and make the "encounter of the week" format something relatable: a western. Maybe have some of the Appleoosa branch of the Apple family do it. Instead of aliens, they encounter various native tribes, which in this case would be represented by, idk, pronghorns or something. The name of this show: Wagon Train

I guess I can see that, I had really low expectation for it since the first few episodes didn't really felt interesting, but once they get the whole space exploration going it was pretty good.
I was pretty impress how they kept the whole plot from one episode to another going, it was so snappy, which was a pretty great surprise since most of the cartoons are lazily written as to not expect to follow the actual plot.

Picard's cutie mark goes in hard. Makes a lot of sense. Tho the stabbing happened around academy graduation, so he was basically an adult by this time, a bit late to get a cutie mark. I am not sure what Riker's CM could be. Trombone? I can't really think of any self-defining moments from his past. Probably the most meaningful thing would be his conflict with his father. I guess some generic leadership cutie mark would have to do.

It could be an anbo-jyutsu staff. I'm not deep in the pony lore, do they wrap their fetlocks around things to hold them or use their teeth?

TOS if you like camp and don't mind horrible 60s special effects. TNG if you want something more "normal". You gotta tank the first season and parts of season two, though, as they're rough. Once Riker gets his nautical beard, though, you know it's gold from here on until S7 and the ghost fucking, anyway.

>>42297244
I wouldn't say beyond repair, but it's pretty grim. To give you an idea of how grim, WW3 was originally started by some vague eugenics shit in Asia spiraling out of control. Now, it was started by BLM and MAGA having a civil war.

Hopefully Skydance will clean house and get the nerds running the asylum again.

I'd characterize TOS more as "post-WW2 science fiction." It's a good fit for someone who likes Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, etc. It helps to have an appreciation for camp, but I think that's because some things that we look on as campy nowadays, like the banter among Kirk, Spock, and Bones, were at the time considered just a normal part of any TV show.
Anonymous No.42308630 [Report]
>>42304826
I think they have very similar outlooks, albeit they're presented for different age ranges. Also just a personal opinion but I think they're both at their best when they embrace their inherent campiness. Nu-Trek and late-season FiM both have a bad habit of taking themselves too seriously.

pretty neat. I kind of wish there was more discussion on how people would like to fix the Lower Deck, since I like the premise of following the low rank offices but the execution was bit sucky.

It's kinda sad but rather than appreciate MLP as this big fantasy thing with all its lore, whenever I write I keep trying to turn it into science fiction. 'Too damn much magic, need to make it more 'realistic' so that there are actually 'stakes' when anything of consequence happens.

Oh, it's easy. You'd only have to fire the showrunner, the entire writers room, the producers, the art team – and them, maybe, you'd have a good show. Keep the cast, they're good, but everyone else stinks.

All you need to fix that is to establish the rules of magic and stick to 'em. Feeling Pinkie Keen goes in the trash, Twilight was right, magic can too be analyzed scientifically. She went to fucking college to learn how, dammit!
Anonymous No.42310065 [Report]
I still wonder if the original idea of destroying the Enterprise-D in the S6 finale and getting a new ship for S7 would have revitalized TNG and kept it going another few seasons without them desperate scraping for ideas like the warp speed limit or if it would have been received like it was in Generations.

Well that is reasonable enough to say certainly. However, another question that I have isn't just the consistently of the rules in Equestria but elsewhere. If you take these ponies and move them out of their realm do those rules apply to the same extent and, if not, why would that not be the case?
