But this is like complaining about “Conker: Live and Reloaded” only because of its censorship and ignoring the fact that the controls are objectively superior on the shooting stages, which have been made easier with the addition of reticles, for example. The later “Sonic” games on the Sega Genesis also received this sort of flak: they added new features to make the games objectively more playable, yet people still lambast them because they just aren’t the original game.

It’s not necessarily bad, but it would be objectively worse when compared to modern games that use more modern graphics. If we consider that character models or sprites would need to be less detailed and the levels would be harder to parse in our minds as a result of this, this may make these vintage games less playable by modern standards. In fairness, however, I have played multiple matches of Q3 in the gmares server and the issue of graphics was not a concern, but nothing is as detailed as it is in QC. Also, if you read the post again, you’ll see I was only referring to the issue of graphics as an example. As other examples, I’m pretty sure that the super shotgun didn’t make its debut until Q2 and we didn’t get reticles until Q3.

I don’t really see how it is. We can judge a game based on its own merits rather than by making comparisons to other games, but I can see how and why we could do both.

Also, one thing I’d like to add is that older games in the franchise don’t get very high player counts (unless all of the the Q3 gmod servers can somehow make up for it), so it may be difficult to queue into a match when there are only a handful of matches to queue into and it may be difficult to play if the only servers that are active are in far-flung enough regions of the globe that laggy matches become the norm rather than the exception.

last distro I bothered using was Bodhi for my x32/x86 IBM R40 out of necessity (win7 was very laggy), but it self destructed from a permissions elevation command and corrupted itself. I know managing files is a pain from Bodhi because some genius decided that user friendly windows file paths are apparently not for implementing so looking for and finding files is a nightmare, (downloads don’t have a download folder, no user directory, hidden directories by default with nonsensical file structure, etc).
Does wine work okay? And does Roblox[\spoiler] still hate Linux from what I last know, since it had issues with rendering and being flagged nonstop by the anticheat. How do most steam games fare on linux?

I use an Arch-based distro. it's very easy to use for gaming. I've never heard of Bodhi, but I do know that the various big distros went thru a standardization, so that a piece of software made for any of them will very likely work on all of them. Especially Steam and Lutris.

Wine is in a very good state right now, as well as Proton (the Valve derivative) and GE-Proton.
the state of gaming on linux currently is very good for the most part - there are few games that won't run on Linux thanks to the fine work made by the people working on those translation layers. those that don't work are ones whose devs specifically hate linux and made them misbehave on purpose. and by doing so, they made it clear that their companies deserve to be bankrupt and shut down.

as for managing files and other general use cases: there are file browsers that are very good and distros that have an easy to use GUI. Linux has come a long way in the last few years for useability. Even if there's still much room for improvement, it is in a really good place right now. And I can definitely recommend one of the big distros.

Flatpak is a software management tool (AKA package manager) that works regardless of distro and pulls packages from its own repository. It comes installed out of the box in some distros, and in others it is brain-dead easy to install.
Warehouse is a tool for managing installed Flatpak softwares. Flatseal is a tool for managing their permissions.

Some programs I'd personally recommend using, other than the obvious Steam and Lutris:
- ProtonPlus: for gamers, this tool installs and manages different branches and versions of Proton, which Steam uses to adapt Losedows games into Linux so they can run.
- Kolourpaint: a relatively simple Paint program, with a few more features compared to MS Paint (such as anti aliasing and transparent color choice)
- CPU-X: pretty much the Linux equivalent of CPU-Z, a small but informative little box that tells you what your computer's hardware build is, including features like CPU cache sizes.
- Rhythmbox: the closest thing to Winamp i've seen so far.
- ytDownloader: if you want to rip videos from corptube and other such websites.
- GNOME Calculator.

I got to brainstorming a but too hard in another thread, but I think there's real potential in an mlp x-com like game with the main premise being preventing a changeling invasion in a city like Manehatten, similar to protecting the main city in X-com Apocalypse. Keeping the masses calm to prevent full on panic and city shutdown. Tech focuses on weeding out where changelings are nesting and infiltrating the populace as well as countering their mutations and evolutions as you progress and hinder their plans.
Also it gave me an excuse to break out the aseprite and do this little mock up of a player unit base

Usually the installer will have an option to shrink the existing windows partition by XX GB and install Linux in that space instead. I know Ubuntu used to have an option like this, and I'd guess Debian and Mint probably do now as well. Just make sure you actually read and understand what it's saying before you go pressing buttons. This especially goes for anything related to disk partitioning/formatting and the bootloader

The best distro for beginners is fedora. You can pick an spin image, each image comes with a different DE. KDE Plasma is the easiest one for newbies. Oh, also, fedora repos are relatively bleeding edge, while mint have older stufd and will have you dealing with third party PPAs. Fedora also has binaries optimized for processor instruction sets: x86_64-v3 v2 v1, i dont know if mint has that as well

yeah the EQG-only part comes because I thought of it as a segment of the EQG Stream.

Style-wise, I couldn't give less of a shit about the story, but a lot of the voice acting has great moments, and additionally, there are plenty of "your custom character in a serious cutscene" moments. Gameplay wise, it's a really nice slow-burn for hanging out with your buds and abusing the shit out of the systems to do both silly things and powergaming things. I've done a few hundred hours with anons on it, so it at least stands out in that regard. The less seriously you take it, the easier it becomes to make your own fun.

My main attack wand can't destroy the sand that the crystals bleed when they take damage, so my strategy has been to dig a sloped tunnel through the floor so the sand drains away on its own. In retrospect I should have tried kicking it into the wall to see if it would die to contact damage

I successfully traversed the volcanic lake using only NMM's helm, a shitty digging wand, and about 1 sea worth of blood. The general strategy was to freeze a chunk of lava into rock, dig a hole in the middle, and fill the hole with blood. Then wait for the rock to melt, at which point the lava touches the blood and turns into volcanic rock. You can also dig out the bottom of the hole and let the blood fall onto the lava. I think this strategy would actually be fairly quick if you start from inside the machine egg.

So I've thought on it and here is what I think about mods:
MANDATORY:

Feeling of pride and accomplishment plus extremely nice benefits that allow progression where vanilla is just "more of the exact same thing for all eternity".
>Chisel Tools
Vanilla chiseling is made with clearly zero thought given to survival-mode usage, this fixes that. Pantograph allows copying shape between blocks of different materials, wedge allows proper rotation, shifting, and mirroring, and plane allows removing entire layers at a time without needing to click 256 times.
>Workbench Expansion
For when you need a really large amount of the same chiseled block and you know ahead how much, this is faster than pantograph.
>Stone Quarry
TFC's stone-freeing is fine for small-scale use, but if you want to build something large, you'll want either this or to pop into creative. Also, TFC does bricks out of rocks rather than exclusively out of plain stone, plus in-world chiseling for polished meaning you don't lose over half of the rock when freeing. Stoneyards full of rock cubes also look very cool.

Moving containers without needing to empty them, nuff said. Also gives a reason to use regular chests over trunks.
>Foundry
Having to pour alloys one by one regardless of whether you've just started or have steel everything is cringe and gay. Sandcasting would be better but I don't think anyone had implemented that yet.

Jonas devices are an absolute disappointment in the vanilla game. This fixes that by making them actually useful.

Most of vanilla ruins are somewhat lacking visually and definitely lacking loot-wise as most of what they have is cosmetics. BR fixes that by adding more, prettier ruins and the Schematics - ability to craft certain uncraftable things and multiply yields of things you can craft causes wee issues with recycling mods though.
>Bricklayers
Hypocritical pigsty notwithstanding, it does add a lot of pretty and/or otherwise lacking things to building and pottery. Also, more sense of progression with the porcelain, which requires effort but is altogether Just Better than regular clay.
>Expanded Foods
Overpowered in many regards, but gives food variety where vanilla has only stew and pie.
>More Roads
Prettier roads at a cost, and again sense of progression and a sink for your temporal gear stockpile. Allegedly the mod had issues with world corruption, long ago, but I've never seen that repeat since 1.14.
>Alchemy
Nice bonuses for consumables plus even more progression plus an actual use to spirits which otherwise exist just because since there's no thirst to interact with liquids.
>Flower Farming
Grow flowers like regular crops, to go with Alchemy making use of them. Orrrr...
>Wild Farming (Revival)
EXPONENTIALLY OVERPOWERED especially if Expanded Foods is also present, allowing you to easily get foods that are better medkits than actual salves and bandages. But allows growing flowers like flowers rather than crops. To make the mod not overpowered, launch with it on so it generates the config, then disable crop seeds, bush seeds, cactus seeds, reed cloning and log scoring.

A classic. Allows getting fish with traps rather than stabbing it manually (and then getting no meat most of the time because >Tyrone) alongside a bunch of other features like placing pelts, lighting your stuff with fireflies (>canon), monkey bridges that don't require you to be a master chiseler to build, smoking meat and more. The biggest downside is that it also adds "better" stairs, overpopulating the game's block system.

Another classic. Adds "cows", bigger gates, and water wheel as an alternate power source.

Do you want your windmill to look like a windmill rather than needing to merge dozens of distinct windmills and look quite silly unless master chiseler?

An alternate way to do bee farming that also gives bees another utility: boosting crop yields.

Better viewing experience.

FINALLY separated, visually better trees through having roots and burls.
>Animal Cages
Do you dislike the "lead animals around" mechanic (or its cousin courtesy of xethardation, YEET THE FUCKERS THROUGH THE SKY WITH UNICORN TELEKINESIS)? This mod allows trapping animals in cages and moving them without first having to remove the need to do any of that like xskills does.
>Snowshoes
Move faster through snow. Something that really shoudl be vanilla.

Extreme overwhelming super bloat. Fruits & Nuts adds over 150 (ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY) plants with barely any genuine variety. Sure, thorny and/or cover bushes are nice but not this many of them. Apparently this is also the only mod that adds nuts (such as hazel), one of the real life's staples instead of vanilla peanuts only. And Trees & Shrubs is 50+ trees, which would be nice for texturing but again, too many.
>Weapon Pack Alpha
Suffers from the issue of bloat (many things with no actual benefit) but it does have cool thing in the form of Bush Knife, which is a harvesting-only knife with the speed of axe.
>Cats
Cats. They look cute and they have utility: drifters in their vicinity get locked into worship animation and ignore you.
>R. Meat
Makes animals drop more meat so you don't get the nonsense where 1 well-fed bear is the same as 15 rabbits meat-wise and 3 of them fat-wise. The food is already relatively easy so the biggest effect from this is lots of rot/compost as you'll have issues with preservation rather than acquisition (Primitive's smoking is great for this). Biggest problem is that it also boosts small animals far too much (1 chicken is 17 - SEVENTEEN - meat pieces on average) and there is no config, so an edit to the files would be required to make it make better sense.

Speaking of recycling, something is halving (and rounding down) the stone recycling recipes bricklayers adds (such as hammering dry walls back into stones please ignore how dry stacking means it shouldn't need a hammer in the first place). If I manage to track it down (since it's a huge issue if it ends up on the server) I'll report, and if someone's defeated that already, do tell.
