What's the deal with guitar pedals?
I bought one to sound better... now I need twelve just to sound normal.
You got distortion, overdrive, fuzz whatโs the difference?
Itโs all just โangry in a box.โ
And there's always one pedal that doesn't work unless itโs placed at exactly 17 degrees northeast of your amp while Mercury is in retrograde.
What's the deal with guitar amps?
They go to 11, but the neighbors call the cops at 3.
You want tube tone? Great!
Now you need 30 minutes to "warm it up" like it's a 1950s Buick.

whats the difference between a Gibson LP and SG and why should i own both?
>>126863272Next to nothing unless you're a tonewood freak. There's more mass to a LP and for the Standards and up, there's a maple cap over the mahogany body. It's possible it gives a little more of a bright snap, but it's negligible. Gibsons don't differentiate much among each like Fenders do. I have ToneX & Amplitube 5 on my computer. I have a Quad cortex. I've played other modellers. I have a few different tube amps. I think modeling/capturing have quite easily gotten to the point to being as good as tube amps (years ago really).
Of the amps that I have played they usually sound just as good now.
I have never played a Dumble but I assume that they get that tone right as well and I have to say, and this is the main point of this comment, the Dumble TOAN is not special.
I've been looking through various threads in different forums of people mentioning their favorite tones from songs/albums and almost none of them are from Dumbles. Not that that says everything, some of my favorite tones are from Dr. Z captures (I have not played a real one) and Matchless (I have a Chieftan and a Ceriatone Mutchle$$ DZ30 ) and I can't say that I know any songs that use them, I just played them and liked them.
tl;dr Dumble is highly overrated

>>126865105not really. the whole point of a key is that each interval is a different lettered note. and then you've got the Mustang which can't decide if it's a guitar, an amp, or a muscle car
>>126865360just use lighter strings. itโs better for your guitar and sounds 90% the same. better for finger picking anyway

>>126865563I didnt say just throw them into any scale. There are sometimes moments where you write double sharp or flat. No duh i didnt understand that's why I asked for clarification. That's how learning works
Why is something a double flat or double sharp when thatโs just a whole step down or up? Why call it a G## instead of just an A or an Abb instead of just a G? I donโt get it.
>>126865734me either. Iโd love to hear the explanation. unless theyโre referring to the key on the staff where it just has X amount of symbols?
>>126865448If you don't have a pick, fingerstyle is gonna be quieter. Bigger strings help that out.
It isn't the strings that make it difficult anyhow. Some guitars just don't have a lot of spacing between the nut slots, including some acoustics, so it can feel like a string issue.
>>126865734It's just convention since it helps to show how you progress from one note to the next. If you've already got an A# for example then the note a half step below it is naturally gonna be a G## and not another A note.
>>126865766is it not lighter strings that make finger style louder?
>>126865797Not sure why they would, technically speaking. If they enable you to pluck harder though, I guess that could work out.
Where the FUCK are the good qualit control manufacturers? FGN? Godin? Suhr? Im happy with my 4k Tele Custom, but everything under by Fender is absolute fckign trash quality wise.
HELP!
>>126865825I think thatโs the purpose. you have to play right against the bridge finger style unless you have banana hands so the strings are going to be much harder to pluck
>>126865734Its theory. In theory you can't have in a scale two notes with the same name. In terms of theory Ab, A and A# are the same degree or "step" in scale. And you can't two of the same in a scale. In practice, of course, right A instead of G##, but in music theory you can have stuff like:
Cb, Dbb, Ebb, Fbb, Gbb, Abb, Bbbb (sic!), Cb (Altered Dominant bb7 scale from Cb)
Because of that some say that the blues scale is not a scale proper because it has two steps of the same degree, for example:
C, D, Eb, E, G, A, C (major blues scale, two degrees of E), or
C, Eb, F, Gb, G, Bb, C (minor blues scale, two degrees of G)

>>126867928you're retarded it's not bullshit at all midwits love saying actually there is no difference between spending money and not the real issue stems from the majority of people being midwits with no taste who can't hear anything and the minority of people who can discern fine details and afford nice things having to deal with your uneducated cope repeated ad infinitum
>>126867955I have nice things. I have a D-18 at least. Where tonewood actually matters. It just doesn't matter on electrics.
>>126867955sounds like you fell for some memes and are awfully defensive about it buddy
its basic science. wood type has no bearing on the tone of an electric, because electric guitar pickups don't rely on resonance to work. you'd need a piezo pickup for that.
who's really coping here? mind you i have several thousand dollars in nice guitars, im old enough to afford it, so don't resort to deflecting.
>>126868012when you got your d-18 did you have a chance to play a d-28 as well? i thought they were a considerable step up but they resell for about the same price as a nice D-18
im looking to buy in a couple of weeks and i dont have the luxury of going to a store
>>126868075I used to have a D-16 Special...which is like d-28 but without the expensive dovetail joint. $1000 less.
Since we're talking tonewoods, the main difference is between rosewood and mahogany. Everything else about the two styles (no matter the brand really) is mostly the same. Mahogany is akin to a neutral flat EQ with a bit of midrange. But rosewood is scooped and has more pronounced highs and lows. It makes for a pretty shimmery sound when you're strumming. A really nice rosewood guitar can almost sound like a 12 string without being a 12 string. And a lot of singers like rosewood because the human voice fits well between those highs and lows.
But none of this really applies for electrics. If you want a flat EQ base to work with, a mahogany guitar won't do that. The right pickups will get there.
>>126867839>Tonewood>Flame maple tops>Ackhuslly 50s stuff was magickYes most of it is cargo cult garbage.
>>126868012it makes a difference whether that difference matters to you is besides the point. denser woods affect sustain obviously.

tubes do sound different when they warm up
every part of the guitar influences its sound, whether that is audible to you is irrelevant
modelers don't sound like the real thing
https://vocaroo.com/1g9jdOiJH7O5
>>126868524I've been playing guitar longer than half of my life now. I've owned a lot of gear. It's all bullshit. I've come to the conclusion I don't need much but a Strat+plexi type amp. And one of those Martins I mentioned above. I like to have the real thing, but I could probably do just as well with a Pacifica and digital model with a Marshall setting.
>>126868558this results in this sort of generic platitude wisdom that persists in the audio space that "conversion doesn't matter" "plugins sound like the real thing" "all entry level preamps are good" blah blah blah this is bullshit that is by and for 95% of consumers who are literally fucking retarded but when you get to the upper echelons of any skill or hobby these differences are the point and the legions of retarded pseuds only clutter up the signal. there are places on the internet where there are decidedly more people who know what they are talking about but mostly you guys really don't so i'm telling you just in case you never realized that actually the things you take for granted to be established truth are in fact bullshit and there is a point to paying for quality.

>>126868801I don't really care about the subtle difference between wood bodies or necks or fingerboards because it's such a small difference that it doesn't matter. I've never subscribed to the theory that electrical guitar woods don't affect the sound of the guitar, it's just not enough that I care. It's all shit that can be tweaked with an EQ. But the fact that you seem to think these vintage guitars and amps are so valuable that you can only sound good if you have them is bullshit. Joe Bonamassa has all the vintage gear in the world and he still sounds like absolute dogshit because he's a dogshit player with no personality. People tend to overcompensate for a lack of skill with expensive gear.
>>126868797Tonewood is less provable than God. That's how low on the totem pole it is. Why did you bring this up and split our united front against tonewood schizos. :\
Every thing didn't come from no thing. If you don't believe in God, you'd still need something as transcendent as God to manage that. Or you'd have to believe in an utter absurdity that would make Lovecraft himself go insane. And that'd be godlike too.
>>126868913no nigger i'm saying it matters if you want quality. not that they improve your playing but they improve your sound if your playing is a fixed variable, obviously. niggers always try to distort and weasel out of the truth. it's so obvious, you can't argue with it. aspire to a high standard and stop making excuses as to why you can be comfortable as a mediocre waste.

Then I played an Ovation that had a really thick neck and I felt zero fatigue, turns out the neck on the Yamaha is way too thin for me and hurts my hand.
>>126869513Yeah that's why I bet on Jackson rather than BC Rich right. It's mostly made in China but you know the Chingchongs at the factory really wanted you to have a good instrument.
I discussed guitar with a legit Chinese on /int/, you can't blame these guys for making cheap guitars. At least the ones that work in some companies really really love music and guitar playing and so forth, only they're not allowed to build or even play on Fenders and so on.
So depending on if they have the right and the tools, they make great guitars for a steal. I'm even actually curious about getting one of their typical Chinese brands because apparently they have great hardware and craftsmanship for the price of a mid-tier Epiphone.
So yeah. I still don't believe in the voodoo magic of 50s American guitars. I've seen videos from luthiers repairing these stuff, some have terrible flaws.
>>126869611i can absolutely blame them for being insectoid vermin lol
>>126869342Off beat? You mean the time change to 3/4 during the chorus?
>>126869335Retard? Excuse me? And no I'm not a big fan of Joe Banamasa. I think he's glib.
>>126869696Well okay man, that's like your opinion man, but thanks for letting us know man.
>>126869513The only thing that may have been better about '50s guitars is the wood, because those 500 year old trees are all gone now. Other than that, you can suck a bag of dicks. Modern machining and production techniques are far superior. Instead of relying on some hungover boomer to build your guitar correctly, you now have cnc machines, plek machines, and QC processes that prevent you from getting a lemon. Pickups have been perfected. There's nothing special about vintage guitars except for the wood (in some cases) and the boomer lore. Most of them play like shit.
>>126869779Eh. I played a 70s Les Paul it felt good, like sex. Felt like sex, I admit. Guitar was fucking fucked up, missed a string, but the neck was like a wet pussy.
Other than that yeah it's overrated. Not sure what you're talking about the wood, bro they build guitars without wood now.
>>126869779it's just not true man soul is something you really just can't express. listen i'm not saying go out and pay 80k for a vintage strat that's retarded. the point i'm making is that aspiring to something other than slop is worthy. those guitars beget a tradition from which rock and roll flows. don't get a fucking prs, don't cut corners and get some retarded chinese bullshit, definitely don't get a new fender that you pay $2000 for, etc. good used instruments that don't cost too much that were built by people who cared that are descended from inspired AMERICAN design are the sweet spot
