there's definitely some early metal riffing here, whenever the song gets slow (the majority of it outside of the chorus) it brings to mind the title track off black sabbath's debut and has a lot of the same trademarks

but this record is from late 1970, so i wouldn't even rule it being influenced by sabbath out either

Yeah that's usually the case with a lot of these claims about what 'heavy' music is. Having a dark 'heavy' atmosphere is one thing but that in itself doesn't make something metal.

>>126878175
Maybe so but 'In Rock' still has a lot of that old 60s rock sound to it similar to Zep, the first Sabbath album does on some songs too but the title track and a few of the others have something unique for that time.

Not as much as Zeppelin, I only hear it (and this is mainly due to the Vanilla Fudge-esque organ) on some segments of Speed king, Flight of the Rat, and Living Wreck.. And the first two i'd only think they were from the '60s because of Jon Lord's style of playing organ.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK4U1p1WQU4&pp=ygUaZGVlcCBwdXJwbGUgaGFyZCBsb3ZpbiBtYW4%3D and you also have to remember, that there's also material on that record you would NEVER assume was from the '60s like this song right here

>And when Master of Reality came out literally nothing sounded like that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5qYBhacTLo&pp=ygULc2F0b3JpIHB0IDE%3D Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Pt. 1.
Granted, this song (and album) is from the same general timeframe as MoR and is very clearly influenced by Black Sabbath.

>>126878581
Okay I'll give you this one, I'm giving this a listen right now and this is VERY, VERY heavy for 1967 and I hear trad doom riffing all over this song. Though most people don't say Sabbath invented outright invented metal. I think most metalheads would agree there are metal songs before 1970, it's just that Sabbath released the first consistently metal record.

They didn't emerge out of the mist of course, and like anything else, things are shared by unrelated parts of a given context. Black Sabbath is arguably worthy of the title more than the other because it wasn't only about the sound.

This is more or less my stance, though personally I always include Deep Purple. Black Sabbath brought the heavy, Deep Purple brought the metal, if you get what I mean.

>>126878729
>Blue Cheer was already heavy asf
Not metal, I'll call it proto-metal and two songs off Vincebus do get close, but that's it.
>Zeppelin already had 2 albums out
And there's only 1-2 songs on each that even resemble metal.
>Helter Skelt-
no.
>and Hendrix had been doing his thing.
Influential on heavy metal no doubt, but he was influential on just about every form of heavy, guitar-driven music.

Uh... I guess? Look at Yourself is a freakin' heavy song, and Rainbow Demon is surely heavy (though it only has elements of metal i'd argue) too, but I can't name many more outside of those two. I admit it's been a while since I listened to those two records but that's all that sticks out in my head.

So was Randy Holden's absolutely incredible Population II. In fact, this song, Fruit and Icebergs, appeared on Blue Cheer's New! Improved! in 1969.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QId2humOOo

There's a lot of very special heavy music from the early 70s, but most of it was very heavily influenced by Black Sabbath. But Deep Purple, Randy Holden and a small group of certainly draw from some similar cosmic stardust.

I'm going to take the opportunity to post some very heavy hard rock and early metal. I'll post it chronologically. Hope you enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orPrRGRWEHc
1971 - Bag - Nothing Will Remain

Interesting psychedelic band from the Netherlands with very little output.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gURiVS2cpJg
1972 - Jerusalem - Primitive Man

Caveman music produced by Deep Purple's Ian Gillan. Really fun - there are times when it feels like it skipped the 70s and 80s and went straight to the 90s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TUkxrrDiUc
1972 - Ruja - Tรผtarlaps Kloaagis

I simply cannot explain this song. Bizarre, experimental, depressing and heavy. Apparently this was a pretty big band in Estonia, but I kind of doubt this was one of their hits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-HCh7JMQ3g
1973 - Blast - Damned Flame

Hesitant to post this one because it kind of sucks, but it's got a massive energy and heaviness for the era. Fascinating, but not very listenable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKS5Tw7mlk4
1974 - Pentagram - 20 Buck Spin

Most people here probably know Pentagram and what Bobby Liebling went on to do in the 80s. This is a 1974 recording of one of their classic 80s songs; a rendition from as early as 1971 exists in the form of "Crucified". Part of what makes this song so heavy is that the bassist, Greg Mayne, is playing chords.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa4TlPfYcDs
1974 - The Groundhogs - Sad Go Round

A slow, heavy song from the Groundhogs' seventh album. The band was fairly big in Britain, but this album didn't make much of a dent in the charts. Maybe the novelty of heaviness was wearing off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQGUr-Zs6Fo
1975 - Pure Hell - Wild One

All-black punk band from Detroit recording very heavy and ominous music for the era. They would later rerecord it in much higher fidelity in the late 70s.

1975 - Riot - Warrior (Demo)

Riot released Warrior on their debut album in 1977, but this extremely rare demo from 1975 of what is probably the first power metal song is an interesting look at the nascent genre.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OxmzvH0NNw
1978 - Lazer - Demon's Daughter

At this point, we're at actual metal. There was a small but hardcore heavy rock scene in Texas that seemed to be several years ahead of the curve; this is one of the craziest examples. Check out bands like Axxe, Ultra, Overload.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch6tT9Z9FIc
1978 - Angel Witch - Baphomet (Demo)

A demo of Angel Witch's Baphomet, which appears on their 1980 self-titled debut. I have to imagine this was the heaviest music recorded in the 70s. Unfathomably heavy for the era, and it owes a lot to Black Sabbath.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jdb9l4hJTY
1979 - Squadran - The Wall

A band from New York that was just a little too ahead of their time and failed to launch. Could definitely be characterized as speed metal.

Let me know if you're interested in more weird, interesting heavy rock and early metal. I've got a lot.

Nah, I work as a composer and listen to a ton of music. Over the last ~20 years, there's been a sort of renaissance for lost 70s music because of the internet, and a lot of these bands have been able to reissue their music or in some cases, completely revive their careers.

I'm glad there's interest in this old music. I'll post a few more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWXD-HDkck4
1966 - The Sons of Adam - You're a Better Man Than I

What starts as a heavy but fairly standard cover of The Yardbirds' You're a Better Man Than I turns into what might be the heaviest song of '66 thanks to Randy Holden's explosive guitar playing. Randy Holden is a lost prophet of heaviness - look up his story. It's tragic and fascinating, with a well-deserved happy ending.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I58ogZEwBes
1970 - Demian - Todd's Tune

This band is probably better known as Bubble Puppy, who had a minor hit with Hot Smoke & Sasafrass. A not-quite-as-heavy version of this song is on their 1969 debut album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNgos_-T0UQ&list=RDRNgos_-T0UQ&start_radio=1
1972 - Ter (Erkin Koray) - Hor Gรถrme Garibi

Unlike everything else I've posted, Erkin Koray is huge. He's considered the father of rock in Turkey, and is a national icon. Ter is a group he was part of in the early 70s that released only one record, but it includes this massive song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coWFGH9PYvk
1973 - Slowbone - The Last Goodbye

Hard rock from the UK. The song features a monumental buildup that explodes to a heavy but brief crescendo.

~1974 - Arktis - Y.T.T.

Psychedelic krautrock group from Germany. This song was released on an album full of unpublished demo recordings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIEEzuI3P-4
1976 - Ginbae - Anne of Green Gables

Heavy rock from Japan. Their whole album is extremely catchy glam rock; this song veers into proto-metal territory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvIo6msKNMk
1978 - Pagan Altar - The Black Mass (Demo)

Demo of the doom metal song The Black Mass, which was rerecorded and released in 1982. Pagan Altar is kind of neat because it was a father and son band. Clearly owes a lot to Black Sabbath.

Rainbow demon is definitely a metal song. It's not the dark kind though, its more mysterious in terms of the vibe the instrumentals give.

If we compare it to (early) black sabbath, it's closer to something like the wizard or maybe NIB.
Rather than their darker stuff like black sabbath, hand of doom, or electric funeral.

Best at war and conquering, best at inventing, best at music and the arts, best at writing (literature), best at comedy, we are simply superior to all. The only thing people have us on is food, as Italy has the rest of the world beat on that front. Listen man, I hear you. I don't think it's as cut and dry as you're making out, and none of those bands released "metal" albums, but undeniably they played their part. I said above and I'll repeat here, for Black Sabbath's claim to metal, it isn't only about the music, but also the ethos - the imagery, the lyrical content, all that stuff, coupled with the music. That gives them a debatably slightly larger role, but it isn't neat.

Listen, I appreciate this post. I appreciate what you're trying to say to this person. But this is an ~105-110 IQ take. The barrier to entry is too high for this guy. This guy just isn't capable of parsing its 10th grade-level nuance.

Not a single one of these albums is majority heavy metal, and half of them (Iron Butterfly, Cream, The Yardbirds) have ZERO heavy metal on them. Try again.

Could be a lot of things, it's buggy. Are you using the newest version? You logged in? Did you check the router ports? Shitty as it is, you may simply need to reinstall it.

Don't sweat it, it's been this way since at least 2002 when I started using it (it's over for me). It's almost comforting at this point.

what was the first wave?

I'll note that scorpions formed in 1965 and their first album came out in 1972
Another second wave might be motorhead. They were formed in 1975 and their first album came out in 1977.

why does everyone forget Mountain? They were the hardest metal band of the late 60s and even played at Woodstock
