Regular people everywhere on both sides believe in individual freedoms quite a bit. Some just emphasize different freedoms that are currently contentious and that everyone hasn't come to an understanding of what the limits should be, but the underlying impulse of most people is still Liberal. Neither a Western "Right or Left" person could ever last long in a society of either actual Communists or Fascists or some Theocracy. People really only clash on the extreme freedom issues, when they're otherwise similar. Like the Right believes in less restrictions of gun ownership, and Left in sexual freedoms, for example. But there are malicious actors playing culture war stuff wanting everyone to be at each other's throats 24/7 on just these specific current issues as if all existence hinges on them.
