ok so I rode to work and back, did about 2km of gravel, things I noticed
>tilted seat downwards because on my way to work my balls got squished so badly
>fuckers didnt set up front derailleur properly, my highest gears were chain rubbing
>rear brake feels like shit
>much faster on road, even with wind I could just tuck in and counter it
>much slower on gravel (double track with tons of rocks), bike didnt feel uncomfortable, I felt unsure in it
>I have rather big and wide feet, so I wear large size and I can hit the road easily if I dont keep my feet straight, especially noticable offroad
gonna leave it at the shop because they told me to ride 50km and bring it back so they can retighten everything, gonna keep riding after that

Putting together an unstealable commuter after another attempted theft of my preferred rider. Frame and all the parts are top quality, and anything with bearings is new or NOS, but I'm shitting everything up.

This is just a test assembly, going to disassemble, properly shit up and put back together. Finishing touches will include mismatched multi coloured cable outers, artificial rusting of all the bolts and frameset, plus some ugly af stickers. Cassette is brand new, spokes too, just testing various rusting techniques and products. Hopefully the end result will be a lovely to ride bicycle that looks like it was fished out of the canal.

Tip is to rubbing off the branding on the tires if possible. Fresh rubber like that is a giveaway

Keep half a tube that you can stuff under the fender and let it hang out while you leave it locked up. Will at a glance make it look like itโ€™s busted

I used Montana rust effect paint for the cassette. See above posts, I covered the tyre logos with black permanent marker, sound advice.

There's a lot of money in bikes and parts, and they are so easy to steal. We caught a lad at work taking snaps of bikes with his phone at the bike shed after checking CCTV the day after 3 bikes were pinched. Turns out he was sharing the pics on some forum where people would offer cash for particular bikes or parts. He'd then get a mate to turn up in a van with the right tools and off they went.

Romanians of course.

Youโ€™re a tall boy arenโ€™t you? Canโ€™t say Iโ€™m in love with the components but if it works it works. Saddle looks decent Iโ€™ll say even if the tilt is questionable. Props for sticking with downtube shifters, I couldnโ€™t wait to put STIs on my Centurion. Paint seems to be in decent shape for steel frame

8/10 ready for lโ€™eroica (I could not do the toe strap pedals)

Some bias- my first adult bike a few years ago was an 89 Le Mans. Loved the shit out of it until I encountered a careless old geezer behind the wheel and it got wrecked.

I do need to adjust the tilt of the saddle. I recently had it all apart and haven't done tuned the saddle.

I am tall. Yes. Very astute observation.

I thought about updating the cockpit with brifters, but ended up deciding against it. I have other modern bikes if I want that kind of ride.

This is actually my third Centurions. I had an 83 Comp TA, this 84 Turbo, and I also have an 87 Dave Scott (It's too small for me and I'm giving it to a friend )

is it just me or is that a long saddle
can't say I like the shape of those bars but lefty forks will always be interesting at least

maybe a hot take but I actually like the current cannonade logo, I'm not sure I'm a fan of this generation. Maybe it just doesn't work in those colors.

I might just be being a little autistic, seems like a cool bike overall I just would replace that white housing with a black one to match the rest and *maybe* some more attractive bars if you wanted to go through the trouble involved.

>>2037093
going to be honest I know basically shit about mountain bikes but it looks pretty sweet. that subtle light green color is nice

Is this that great a deal though? You can get a carbon road bike with electronic 2x brand new if you look for deals around this price from big names. Well, on review I see new frames for that bike going for even more so I supposed that's a decent price. if you take the seller at their word the bike hasn't been abused or anything then go for it I guess? I'm pretty wary about being secondhand items online - whole bikes or structural components for them is something I would avoid doing.

I did end up going with a shorter stem. over long rides my muscles under the bicep on my upper arm were getting achey with the 80mm, copped a 70 and that went away. it looks bad but I. don't. care . 'Indarciclo' - Grok says it was an Argentinian bike company from the 60s, never heard of them.
Bought them off ebay for a tenner, they're actually pretty cool, made of steel. They attach to the skewers which isn't ideal. Would be great on a proper off road tourer with 2.3 tyres which is why I originally bought them. But they just help to make this bike look even more absurd and I couldn't resist. The bright white also makes the frame etc look even worse.

My hodge podge Univega. Did a 700c conversion. Looking back I would probably go with a 7spd cassette over the 8 but it works fine. 38c Pathfinder fits perfect up front, it's a little tight for comfort in the rear, may swap to a 35c but they were tires I had around so that's what I'm riding. Did about 71 miles in about 5.5 hours, very few stops. Really need up my calorie intake for these longer rides though.

Doing 100mi tomorrow but I have all day so probably take it a little easier. Trying to get ready for some proper 200ks this year.

so that means it came with 26s? how did you get the cantis to fit if the bosses were for 26 or 650b or whatever? or you switched to calipers? I feel like I see bosses but the front seems like there's a nut on the crown, it's hard to see. did you have to drill the crown and brake bridge?

that bar tilt makes me think you'd be happier with a stem with less reach. or at least, that's what happened to me: my reach to the hoods was working with the bar tilt back but the drops felt weird until I put a stem one cm less reach on. once the bar was right I did have to move the hoods back slightly. if your saddle is tilted like that because hand pain, it should also help with that, too. again, not trying to be an asshole but I spent a lot of time dialing my fit over the past year and that's what worked for me, I had hand and tricep pain with my first try set up.

careful with those lambda pedals, the grip vanishes at the slightest appearance of moisture.

Some chinese cheap rims with 32 mm cone.
>>2038073
Thank you for your comment. I tried to keep it in black/silver color scheme and I'm kinda happy with the result, but I understand if somebody doesn't like it and would rather see it more close to the original marin bike. My idea for the bike tho' wasn't to restore marin bike as it was sold or even keep it as mountain bike. I wanted to build a bike good for longer (100-200 km) trips, hence pretty thin (1,75) semi-slick tires, higher cones. rear mudguard and bags. It needs good lights, including reflecting lights (it's mandatory in my country) - since I ride often on regular roads alongside cars. Plastic crank cover is just handy, doesn't allow chain to fall off.
Again, thanks for your opinion.

It looks like a practical comfortable bike. It's obvious that you enjoy it and that always great to see, especially with an older bike that's been brought back to life.

If I could make a suggestion it would be for full length fenders, these add very little weight but increase QoL no end, especially in the wet. If you get a decent pair and fit them snuggly they can look very discreet.

Thank you for the suggestion - yes, I am thinking about fenders and will probably buy a pair, even if I won't use them all the time. The problem with fenders is that they don't like deep mud and tend to literally block wheels - and I'm trying to make my bike all-terrain bike (I have many different tires; obviously those which I put on aren't good for mud), possibly for ultramarathons (not to win them obviously, just to participate and finish them). But again - will buy them anyway most probably for regular trips.

27in/630s were on there before. I replaced the old Diacompe brakes with longer reach Tektro 559s to have enough adjustment for the slightly smaller diameter 700c/622 rims. The larger tires make up for the rim so ride didn't really change at all.

You are 100% on the stem and it's impact on ergos. This is pretty close but it's definitely set up that way to reduce hand pain. I am looking at the Nitto Tallux, options otherwise are limited since I'm 6'2" and the bike is a tad undersized for me. I think though that the 100mm Tallux will basically sit where I need it to though. If I can't find one I may have to settle with a conversion stem but it'll definitely look less clean. I have the same problem with my road bike, luckily I think the same Tallux can be used there to bring it back about 5mm. It's a custom frame from a local builder I found FB market place so trying to keep that looking good too. So far I love the Lamdas though, the original Suntour pedals were so small my feet would literally curl around them when climbing.

>Nitto Tallux
I never heard of it but it's a version of the Technomic for Rivendel. I used a Technomic myself and it's worked, unfortunately I bought too big as I said and had to buy a second one. expensive but worth it. I don't know what advantages the Tallux has over Technomic, but maybe you could save a few bucks, Technomic is expensive enough as it is. but yeah, tall rider on an undersized, classic frame. I wish you needed an 80mm so I could sell you my other one.

Not gonna lie to you, the bike was bought by my parents more than 30 years ago and wasn't almost used, it spent all that time in basement and in garage. I overhauled it purely for fun. Maybe I will use it in summer to ride to my office (3 km away). It has folded frame so the idea of this bike (I mean of the designers) as to be able to transport it easily so yeah, who knows - maybe I will take it with me somewhere.

the groupset is low tier but the frame is Miyata STB which is a really good frame the previous owner was short and bought the wrong thing and garaged it for 30 years.

yeah, they're stock. I have a nicer Profile Designs bar I'm going to put on, if it feels wrong I'll cut it down.
the problem is the PO garaged it so long all the grease ossified. the shifters were locked in place until I flushed out all the oem grease frozen in there but I still haven't gotten around to stripping the frame and fork and servicing all the bearings yet so it's a garage queen showpiece until then.
once I get her running again I'll fuck with the fit.
what's the current wisdom on bar width? I see a lot of new mtbs with even wider bars but I ride road bikes

I've snapped my axle in the same place dropping a curb and landing in a turn at high speed. the spacer from the modern replacement axle was a bit shorter and haven't snapped that axle yet despite similar abuse

got this gravel bike for a very good price, likely because it's low end and not taken care of (you can see the chain). it's only got claris but I want to start low end and get something nice later. any suggestions for tuning up besides clean chain, clean sprockets, relube everything? I also need to adjust the brakes as one of them is loose but otherwise the wheels seem to be true and the bike shifts even with a chain that seems like it was hit with WD40

Get a nice pair of tires/tpu tubes or tubless, and spd pedals anon. Maybe swap out the bartape too, looks a bit worn.

yeah I can tell the bartape is bad, it's losing stickiness. I definitely plan to get new tires since these seem like shit, maybe gravelkings or marathons. as for pedals i'll definitely go clipless when I take it on long rides but i'll keep those MTB pedals for commuting.

it really can be the congo here sometimes, especially in the shitty parts of the city. One time I was making runs in the deep hood, at an alleyway intersection two ganger cars meet and refuse to give their right of way to pass. The guys in the cars start jumping out the car and throwing hands, then out of nowhere mfers start spawning from the apartments, corners, dumpsters, everywhere, and join the fight. I'm just standing there across the street like wtf. Then I hear "gun gun gun" and see a guy fire two warning shots in the air and hoodrats scattering as fast as they spawned. The drivers and their passengers all just looked at each other, nodded, then managed right of way like nothing happened.

oh, sweet, a team bike is top of the line, let's see if I can read the writing on the components...
>rear derailleur
>Tiagra
wtffffffff?

anyway, I'm no gear snob. modern-ish tiagra is as good as decade-older 105+ or whatever, that was just really surprising.

that cockpit looks wonky, yeah. the way my fit worked out my drops were pointed at the brake bridge but somewhere between that and the rear dropout is recommended, which is what you have now, so it may be ok. the real weird part is the hoods are almost straight up. if they feel right like that I'd try the next size up on stem length and push the hoods down more forward. of course, this means wrapping and unwrapping the bars. I just left mine unwrapped and did a bunch of trial and error over many long rides and then wrapped them permanently. I temporarily padded them with bubble wrap and tape for the sake of my hands.
that looks like a fun bike. I'd say you got a pretty good deal on it, too.

Team is the middle level. There's a "pro"
level above "Team". I think there were/are several levels of model and this was entry-level carbon.

I've just put the chain on and they were perfectly indexed from me eyeballing it! That's never happened before!

Yea I think the brake hoods moved down a bit would make it look and feel a bit less weird. I guess the last owner wanted to be more upright.

iunno maybe it fit him like that but if so he should have gone for a shorter stem imo.
I recently fitted my first drop bar bike and it took forever. the way it felt over long rides required months of fine tuning and trying different things, including fixing a similar bar tilt and hood position with a shorter stem. so, it's fresh on my mind , that's the first thing I thought of when I saw yours. but obviously every fit is different.

well, everything starts with saddle height and setback but I've sorted that out on previous bikes and also it's pretty easy to get the height right with the standard advice everyone gives.
I went to the bike co-op and got a dropbar about my shoulder width and one of those shitty adjustable stems and a quill for it off aliexpress since I have a threaded headset. all cheap stuff.
I test rode it and played with the position. it became obvious that I needed a very short reach but at the extreme, the adjustable stem would only go back to 80mm (measured with a spirit level with a ruler on it eyeballed over the clamp to the quill center). played around with the stack. the bars were 40cm wide which felt a little wide still even though it is usually the narrowest width on offer, but I'm slim. I found an Uno bar on ali that went down to 38 and that fit me much better, and I also preferred the compact bend it has. if a narrower one would be more perfect, it's a moot point since you can't really find them except really old juvenile ones that are steel.

I bought an 80mm reach stem with the stack that I needed. put the bar and brifters on and left the cabling long. test rides to find where I wanted the hoods and the bar tilt. then redialed the stack. then long test rides would tell me via hand pain what needed more adjustment. nosed up the saddle was the single best fighter of hand pain, but I was still getting hand ache because the brifters were rotated too far out, and tricep ache until I tilted the bar back and clamped the brifters closer to me. eventually I had to face the fact that I needed a shorter reach stem so I sized down to a 70mm and then I could tilt the bars forward again so the drops felt right and clamp the brifters back lower. plus I was putzing with saddle fore-and-aft, stem stack, bar tilt and brifter position on every ride since one thing affects all the other things to some degree.
I was 95 percent there, the shorter stem was the final 3%, then micro adjusting everything else to suit the new reach was the last 2%.
it took a few months until I was mostly happy but this wasn't the bike I daily, but it is the one I ride the longest distances on. it took a few more months trying micro adjustments until I mostly quit needing them. I still tinker with it juuuust to be sure, but many times I'll put those experiments back how it was after trying it for a few miles.

update!
have about 50 miles under my pedals now. things that have happened are as follows:
rear derailleur tuned
crank, headset, and chain lubed/greased
put on seat from old specialized
new pedals light set
rear rack
cargo net
repair kit frame bag
phone holder
and its been great! was really having problems before i worked on the derailleur, was shifting by itself randomly or when i pedaled too hard. but I got that sorted, and i lubed/greased everything to make sure its set after the 16yo who probably built it at walmart. mostly just been riding in the city and on paths but the bit of gravel ive taken it on have been awesome! suprised i dont see this brand around here more.

So I'm nearing completion on one of my biggest projects yet.

The hub on the original wheelset broke, so I've decided to use the downtime to strip the aluminum frame bare. Itwas a lot more work than I expected, but I had been thinking about it for quite a long time, and seeing it completed now, I've definitely made the right decision.

Step by step I've turned this old entry level XC bike into my ideal inner city commuter. Please like and subscribe

Well, mostly convenience. the rims are 30 mm so I'm limited to tires of 2.0+ inches. I wanted something fast rolling but still capable of gravel riding and slight off roading. And I frankly really like the look of the g ones, so they were a no brainer for me. They ride really comfy and their size is useful for not getting stuck in tram tracks as well. Speed wise I managed to average 28 kph on flat rides with this setup which isn't too bad I think.

But I'm open to other tire suggestions that match what I'm looking for, as they really are on the expensive side

I'll be honest with you bro. Using your cellphone as a bike computer is a bad idea because it's not designed for it
1.- it will rattle constantly
2.- it may fall of when you least expect it
3.- actually using your GPS plus other stuff will drain your battery. This many not be a problem for short rides but it will be one in a 2-4 hr ride.
4.- if you are concerned with speed, it's not aero.
You do whatever you want tho. It sounds like you are doing short and "slow" rides so using your cellphone as a bike computer should be ok for your application.

Just take it on and off a few more times, there will be a sweet spot where it doesnโ€™t rub. Try shit like holding the brake when you tighten it, pressing it into the dropouts really hard when you tighten it, worst case you can loosen up that brake caliper and move it but I donโ€™t think youโ€™ll need to

I am now unable to take it off because no matter how hard i TWEEST the side without the lever wonโ€™t move. I am scared that I fucked up my bicycle. I think I may have also put the wheel in on the wrong side, the video for the bike has the shiny disc brake bit on the left, but here itโ€™s on the right, same side as the lever.

I am so stupid and really hope I didnโ€™t permanently fuck my literal 2-hours-old bike.

I have a similar problem with QR. When I insert the wheel in the dropouts and tighten, the wheel is always off to the side. Eventually if I fiddle around with the axle and tighten it at an angle, not when it sits neatly in the dropout, then it's straight in the middle of the fork and between the back stays.
Is this an inherent issue with QR or are my dropouts crooked?

You need to loosen the brake caliper once the wheel is set and either pull the brakes and tighten the caliper or align it by eye.
If the rotor is visually moving as the wheel spins then it's warped, bend it back. You might also need to spread the pads to push the pistons back if you pulled the lever with the wheel off, just use a screwdriver or something

Plus I am afraid of breaking something and paying for it later. I lucked out not adjusting anything when putting it back on, but I will just never take it off again unless there is a flat.

A jeep chewed up everything in front, thankfully I made it out with minimal injuries, decided ro turn it into a flat bar commuter/touring bike with what little money I had. Alivio 2x8 set with Sora brakes, 105 brakes, some cheap rim on front with Schwalbe Durano DD plus, even cheaper factory rim with Marathon plus, both 700x25 because that's what the frame allows me at most.

Not that anon but chonky downtubes like that aren't really chonky, it's formed into a skinny teardrop cross section for maximum aero and the cold die forging process stiffens the aluminum for a minimal weight cost

Some of the new aerobikes actually do have very thick squareish cross-section downtubes; I think it's to smooth the air from the wheel to the tube to the bottle/legs and is presumably computer optimized despite looking chonk.

It's an adapter you bolt it on. It was 16 euros.

You should have just stolen it. If you got caught, you could just show them your bike. There's no way they'd prosecute you.

The guy who sold me the wheel was getting rid of it because he wanted to put a 26' wheel on hisnew ebike. Because it was to tall with a 622. He was in a hurry to get rid of it. I told him: i don't think you can reprogram your bosh controller to run on 26, you will mess with speed and milage. I expressively asked if he was sure. People will make crazy deal to get rid of stuff they see as useless.

i think you'll like them.

for now here's a nice 1980s atb that recently sold for $400 on fleabay, i think the double u brake is cool

What exactly makes an atb an atb? I wouldn't associate a sloping top tube with one. It can't just be the stem?

It's funny that growing up in the 90's these are exactly the kind of bikes you'd see rotting away leaned up next to a shed outside everyone's house, now they're the trendy new ride.

It's just an MTB that was made and sold to people cause MTBs were cool.
They were not meant to be taken down a trail, so manufacturers could mount shittier components, as long as it kinda looked like an MTB at a glance.
So yeah, a cheap MTB with a more upright stem and eyelets for fenders.

That's a beautiful and practical bicycle. They are kind of trendy, but they are also excellent machines, or the best of them are. That looks like an early XT groupset, which is bomb proof, easy to maintain, these bikes are like early Land Rovers and other early ATVs in that they were also overbuilt, hugely practical and extremely simple to keep going, also the workmanship is of a high standard, look at the brazing and all with columbus tubing, probably weighs a little over 10kg and cost less than a plastic, sorry - carbon rim set, which isn't bad for a bike that could last a lifetime.

They appeal a lot to riders who appreciate those elements as much as they do to hipsters.

Finally had time to finish my old cannondale project.
Has anyone an idea what cable cover i need for the rear brake near the seatpost? It gets sucked into the holder constantly.

There's supposed to be a barrel adjuster on there I think.
Had a similair thing on an early 90s Trek 850, lost it too.
Made for a nice V-brake conversion though.

this is already basically my build but I may steal the brake-lever-on-stem-shifter idea. that's great

that red Cannondale is cool but the quill-to-threadless adapter prevents it from sexo status

what I did was use the longest, cheapest quill adapter on ali, and a cheap , shitty threadless adjustable stem and rode around with my allen wrenches and adjusted them until it felt right even on my longest rides. then I measured the geometry and bought a quill with that geo.
unfortunately, the stem wouldn't go up and back less than 80mm and on long rides I eventually I realized, after I bought an 80mm quill, that I could feel it stretching me just enough to cause discomfort.
so I did have to buy a second quill. but 70mm is a pretty fringe length it's just that my fit is weird.
