Can't really pick any fault without actually holding it, but it seems fine and the reviews are reasonable, so I wouldn't be afraid of buying it.

>or is there a better option?
As >>28475621 said, an aluminium rad like you've found here >>28475711 is arguably the best option, but is pricey. If you're planning on keeping the car for longer than a decade or so, I'd get the aluminium, but with that being said, I'd flush the cooling system using the old rad first, then fit the new rad and fill it with pre-mixed coolant rather than tap water and concentrate. Tap water will eventually cause scale to build up on the inside of your fancy new radiator, and in roughly 10 or 15 years you'll probably see your cooling system start to lose its efficacy. I personally use Mazda's FL-22 coolant in my NA 'cause it's cheap as chips and you only need to change it every 10 years or so. MX5Parts sell it for around 15 quid, I think.

Yeah please do not use tap water when filling your new radiator, you are just pissing away the robustness of any cooling system when you introduce scale.

Just get deionized water, it's like $3 a gallon.

2002, tuning it myself hopefully. It's a pnp so all I have to do is run a vac line from the capped nipple on the manifold to the nipple on the back of the ECU and it's off to the races. I plan on ditching the MAF but then I lose my nice intake. Been looking for a J pipe in aluminum 2.5" with a tight bend so I don't cross the rad anymore.

I have a gm iat that I apparently do not need, but I am going to keep it anyways in case my stock one goes out.

I have too many projects to do with it in the meantime... more venting, delrin steering and diff bushings, new rear control arm+bushings... Just too goddamn hot and humid out there.

Can be fine. Salvage title just means the insurance company wrote it off which for a old miat can be due to basically any body damage.

Biggest issue with salvage titles is know what exactly gave it that title, how it was repaired, and insurance. Lot of insurance companies wont touch salvage titles or will give you absurd quotes.

i idled the engine for a little while with the heater on max. new thermo is also working, however the fan didn't spin. it's plugged in but i'm not sure why it didn't seem to be working.

u have two fans. did at least one of them start spinning when the thermostat opened? The other one only runs if the A/C is on or if the engine gets even hotter than what 1 fan can control and then the ECU kicks on the 2nd fan.
As far as I understand it.

How long did you idle it? You need to put the heat in max but the blow on the lowest setting, so heat can build up.

I just flushed the coolant on my nc and it I had to burp the coolant a few times to get the air bubbles out, and get hot air at idle.

it's possible it did not get hot enough to even turn on the fan. rev it while you're idling. get it to halfway. if it still doesn't turn on, I wouldn't push it, something's up.

things i've already tried:
>cap off to burp, can see the coolant bubbling right on the edge in the hole
>temp gauge moves to maybe 45% of the way, used to be 50% on the old radiator
>slowly moved the blower from low to maximum
>rev'd the engine several times
new radiator is only slightly warm to the touch in some areas.
i'm not sure what to do.

I got Fab9 with 7.8k rpm limit (ask for 7.8k tune and what gas (US or EU))
versa tunes you get with versatuner and you need it got fab9 tunes anyway
on both faster accelerator response
you can feel more umf on both maybe more on fab9 MAYBE
you should get tune
you don't need full versatune
but versatune tune is open and you could edit it if have full program (if you know engine jumbo mumbo)
don't waste time with popcorn on stock exhaust, zero effect
raised limiter alone worth it, for Nรผrburgring helped me a lot
and you can reach 100km/h on second gear.

Why are the gear ratios so fucked on automatics? The difference between 5th and 6th is like 250-500 rpm. You have to drop down two gears while cruising on the highway if you want to accelerate. I would've preferred a shorter 5th gear that puts the speedo at 3k rpm at 100km/hr and closer evenly spaced 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

If your fan was turning on before you replaced the rad, then chances are the thermostat is opening and with the larger rad it's not getting hot enough for the fan to switch on.
I think OEM core size is like 16mm, so if it's a stock motor it'll probably never get hot enough to trigger the fan just idling. I have one of these skidnation radiators and I think it's kind of overkill for a street car.
Check if you have a 90ยบC thermostat (stock temp afaik) and take it for a drive while keeping an eye on the temp gauge. As long as the engine warms up and the needle stays in the middle (or just short of the middle) you're probably fine.

i replaced it with an OEM from mx5parts.co.uk, but pic related it (left) looks different to the old one. i've noticed the needle goes to the middle much faster than previously.

NA for now just to get it running and driving, but FI is not off the table. Likely going to suck it up and buy an MS3Pro PNP for the VVT control instead of the significantly cheaper VVTuner, which opens the door for tuning FI later. I got a 3.6 ring and pinion from Mazmart and paid a friend to build it along with a Torsen carrier (my old diff was open). While I'm open to learning the skill of setting differential pinion preload, I don't want it to be on this one. Maybe on the old diff I just took out.

It did make me mad the squaretop didn't have that many vac ports and I had to use a tee for the MSPNP vac line >:(

Yeah it's down one vs USDM since RHD (and I'm guessing euro LHD) never had cruise control as an option. I'm not using the vacuum port it has that goes to the return style fuel rail the JDM engine came with (mine is returnless) so I might get away with only one tee.

Definitely recommend going with the megasquirt, especially if you're even considering FI. I always wanted to eventually learn how to work on diffs, but my daily decided to make that decision for me when the rear end pinion bearing went bad last year. Honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting once I got into it, but it took me way longer than I anticipated. The shim pack that came with the kit had a single 3 thousandths shim and every other was 10 or 15, so I had to rebuild the whole stack just to adjust it slightly. I could've bought another pack, but the only ones that would work were over $100 when every other size was $10-15. Overall kinda terrible experience, will do again (when the front bearing goes bad). New diff cover looks sick, I rate the experience 6/10.

Started right up but the engine has either really loud lifters, or bottom end noise. Been looking for another 1.8 for 4 months but every deal I setup has fallen through. unsure whether to just give it up and sell / partout, or save up to do a swap.

input shaft bearing
input shaft bearing
md5: f55213bec7cf952186dbc2d1fb475649๐Ÿ”
Anyone here have up-close-and-personal experience with the inside of Miata transmissions? Specifically an ND would be great, but I'll take any insight. I'm trying to understand how the input shaft bearing is lubricated. I thought it would be lubricated by the transmission oil, but then I watched this video (of a 5 speed, so not an ND but still a Miata):

https://youtu.be/u8rTYlK8Q0g?t=126 [Embed]

Picrelated is a couple frames from the video. In the top frame, it's showing the front of the input shaft bearing which has the ball bearings exposed. The second frame shows the back of the input shaft bearing, and you can see it doesn't seem to be open to the rest of the transmission. Can anyone explain? Does the input shaft bearing have its own sealed lubricant?

Just took my 2020 ND on a road trip, taking the odometer from 14.9k to 18k in the course of 6 days, and while it held up great, towards the end of the trip, I noticed basically every symptom of early input shaft bearing wear, which is not an ordinary mode of failure AFAIK, not to mention it's a 2020 which is supposedly one of the years without systemic transmission issues, so I'm trying to figure out what could have gone wrong.

Outstanding video, never knew there was such a closeup disassembly video of an ND transmission specifically, so will definitely bookmark it for future reference. It unfortunately doesn't have a closeup of the input shaft bearing (or countershaft bearing) though. But it does show they both sit nestled in specifically sized holes in the bell housing. So still leaves me wondering: how are they lubricated? If it's just the transmission fluid, how does it get into the bearing if they're closed on the side facing inward to the transmission? Or are both "faces" of the bearing open and I'm just seeing things wrong.

I don't even know for sure there's anything wrong with my transmission. All I know is it sounds a little different now. It still shifts like a dream, no grinds no nothing. Could just be that it has gone from pristine to not-pristine after my trip, could be that the fluid got broken down a bit. Or, in my worst nightmare, it could be that some metal flakes worked their way into the input shaft bearing and it's now damaged. That's why I'm trying to figure out if that scenario is even physically possible.

>It's sealed with that clean landing in front of the bearing
You're talking about the cover that goes between the bearings and the bell housing right? So that creates a sealed area with the gears and the bearings inside and the oil in with it, and everything inside that zone is lubricated by transmission oil. But in my screenshot here >>28496608 the bearing doesn't appear to be open on the side facing the gears, and the input shaft bearing and countershaft bearing both sit in tailor-made holes in the transmission housing. So are you saying it actually is open? Or at least not a fluid-tight seal? Does it rely on transmission oil to just seep its way past the edges of the bearing and into the bearing?

Very much a you problem. I adjusted the handbrake on my NA 4 years ago, and I've never needed to touch it. How long have you owned it? Some people aren't aware the the handbrake mechanism needs to be unscrewed when changing pads, and they'll just force the pistons in which damages the caliper, so maybe the a previous owner of your car has done just that?

It was definitely a luxury purchase since she is retired now and the old car was perfectly good. The ND3 has a million small improvements, plus she got exactly what she wanted this time. She picked the old one up on a whim at a used car lot in 2018 because my dad and I were tired of fixing her piece of shit Mercedes. Took me 3 years to talk her into it. Since the 2016 is 9 years old with 90k miles and she's now 68 years old, the new car will last her and be trouble free until she's 80+. At that point she probably won't be able to get in and out of it anymore and will have to get a sedan if she's still healthy and driving.
Neither is automatic, they're both manual grand touring so the new one has lsd and bilsteins.

I have nb sport rear calipers on the 323 gtx and the self adjustment simply does not work, I have to adjust it a couple times a year. I fully rebuilt the calipers, I've looked at the geometry of everything in the cable system, used the book method for adjusting it, I've read up online, its just a problem some people have and I've never found a solution that made any difference. It could be that the stroke on my hand brake is different than the miatas but it works perfectly when adjusted so I don't think that's it.

i've got an 1.8l NB currently. love it, but the rust issues are becoming too much and because it's my daily (with frequent long distance drives) i want something a bit more comfy.
is the NC less of a money pit?
the 1.8l NC seems to be weaker (and heavier) than the 1.8l NC, does it feel noticeably slower too?
how do i gaslight myself into liking the look of the NC?

Miatas in general aren't a money pit, just get one that's already good to begin with and keep it waxoyl'd and maintained. Going from a rusty NB to an equally rusty NC isn't really gonna help you much money wise, and the same can be said for a nice NB and a nice NC. Get whatever you want.

all jap cars have rust issues if they're old and if you live where the roads are salted or near the sea.
NC's "don't have issues" because theyre generally newer but I'm sure a few of them are showing their age now. Find a clean one and take care of it. Spray cavity wax or w/e on it.

NC's are *better*, obviously, owing to them being newer, but it's not as if rotten ones don't exist. They are more comfortable than NB's, though, being heavier and more softly sprung. My ex's mum has a very early one, and it was fine.

My NC is 17 years old, zero rust, but I don't drive it in the snow season. NC is so much fun to drive you don't care about how it looks. I think it's better than the ND except for the nose (ND better there by far). But the overall size is better on the NC and the rear is great .

Agree on the BRG. The flat paint looks good on an NA with its more classic Bri'ish roadster inspired lines, but I don't love it on the curvier design of the NB. The metallic Emerald Mica on the NB fits it far better. I don't think BRG would fit very well on the ND for the same reason.

does Haynes ever get anything wrong?
pic rel shows the cooling fan relay to be the "rear most" or closest to firewall on the bank of three relays.
but in my Haynes manual the wiring diagram for the engine cooling fan and the listed colours of its four wires are actually going the relay on the other end of the bank in my car.
taking out a relay looks like a massive pain too, there's a metal bracket in the way which i've already unbolted but not coming off.

JDM NB2 VVT 1.8 with a squaretop intake manifold (half a point higher compression than USDM, 10.5:1), no modifications except for using an OEM NB1 headgasket to better take advantage of the coolant reroute (and water neck delete), and a USDM NB2 exhaust manifold. Went for head studs anyway as I don't like reusing head bolts even when they're not torque to yield, and the ARP studs cost less than a set of OEM head bolts. Futureproofs it some too if I do decide to go turbo later. Also 6 speed and 3.6 swapping at the same time because I hate having money.

Add to that - I think I've isolated the issue to the radiator fan connector being faulty. 0v runs through it. I replaced the relay already and the fan fuse is fine according to multimeter.
I might have to buy a new connector for ยฃ9 and solder it onto the existing wire. There appears to be a clip-on for the connector, which in picrel is the black housing, but I think it'll likely be a solder job.

First of all, that's not a woman.

Secondly, in my experience, women don't generally like small cars. They think they're "cute" which is not a compliment for a guy.

I would assume so yeah. The port on the head and the thermostat housing have the same bolt pattern so they'd both bolt up. I'd probably recommend the FM reroute instead though, the block off plate and the custom rear thermostat housing both have threaded holes for the stock sensor and a 1/8" NPT sensor respectively, plus extra ones for turbo coolant feed lines if that's your thing.

You don't have to remove the head? Unless you have an NB2 and you want to use the marginally better NB1 headgasket, there's no need to pull the head for access or anything to install it. The reroute is still an improvement on an NB2 with its original headgasket.

assuming NA/NB, reseal the oil pan RTV and half moons, rear main seal, and rear main seal carrier RTV on the new engine before it goes in, you have to either pull the engine back out or drop the subframe to do it later if it leaks. also a good time to do the coolant reroute since cleaning the sealing surface for the water outlet on the back of the head is kind of a pain with the engine in the car (still doable though). pulling the transmission with the engine is also easier than dicking around with the bell housing bolts and then trying to stab the input shaft back in when going back together in the car, just paint marker around where the PPF bolts to the transmission so it's easy to just bolt it back up into the alignment it had before

There is no way anyone will convince me that going NB2 reroute with NB2 gasket isn't the exact same as nb1 OEM with no reroute. You are cooking a cylinder regardless if it is #1 or #4.

Hey guys. I posted this like 3 months ago but have been busy with other projects, now going back to this issue.
I accidentally scratched my crank removing the rear main seal.
I spent like an hour with 2k grit sandpaper taking the scratch down. Pic is what I'm left with.
While doing that I found another scratch that was put of sight the whole time. Ugh. No idea where that one came from. Pic in 2nd post.

How smooth do I need to polish this off so that's the rear main won't leak?
Completely or good enough?
I'm gonna go buy a Dremel and some polishing tips. I will also go back in by hand with a 1k sand paper.
Can I get some recommendations on what to use with the Dremel

You shouldn't grind anything. Just get another crank. Use emery paper to get the ledge down without changing the face.

Just get another crank, best case scenario for you. Otherwise no matter what you do your hand will not machine it correctly

>Define lip
A raised edge that sits higher than the flat "bearing" surface

>How smooth do I need to grind it down?
Until you can't feel that lip

>Any harm in flat spots?
Not ideal, but so long as there's nothing higher than the bearing surface, it won't grenade the engine or anything.

>>28512871 is right in the sense that you shouldn't be grinding anything, use fine grit sandpaper to get the bevel down. Don't bother getting a crank yet; it's not ideal to be sanding any precision machined surface, but there's a non-0 chance that so long as there's no proud surfaces, you'll get away with it. Worse case is that it weeps some time later on down the line, but I wouldn't bother going nuclear and replacing the crank yet, not when this "free" fix might just work for you.

Oh, and this goes without saying, but don't sand anymore area than you have to, isolate your working area to as small as you possibly can. Don't start wearing down perfectly good areas of the crank if you can help it.

Guys, 1 year passed after I did regular service and changed oil/filters, but I havenโ€™t reached recommended 20000km until next oil change, got like 4600km left. Whatโ€™s the recommendation, can I drive around this summer for a few months?
Iโ€™ve checked my oil levels manually, oil looks above 50% between two holes on the oil check stick and the smell is OK. Is the 1 year oil filter change really recommended/mandatory or is it a merchant trick in order to syphon out my shekels?

It's not mandatory, but the reason they tell you annually is because your oil will naturally take on *some* moisture from the environment, and a car that doesn't get driven long enough to heat up the oil and burn off that water will experience marginally worse wear and tear than normal. I myself change annually if I don't hit 3,000 miles, but it's not going to grenade your engine if you yourself don't do it for a few more months, but I wouldn't leave it much longer than that.

Ok. In that case I got a small lip left. A lot of it is lower than the rest of the surface, is that okay to leave behind?
Also why would it grande the engine? This is for the rear main seal. At worst it'll leak a bit, no?

Lower should be fine to leave, but I'd at least smooth off any roughness if there is any, just on the off chance the seal dips in and catches on it.

>Also why would it grande the engine? At worst it'll leak a bit, no?
I'm being somewhat facetious, worst case it will leak *a lot*, best case it doesn't leak at all.

cool, thanks.
im gonna hit it with 600 grit, then move to 1000, and 2000. if that gets it removed, i'll try the green polishing compound with a dremel

if that this leaks, then i'll have to remove the engine this winter and take the crank out and have a shop buff all the bearings.

90 minutes later this is the best I can do.
I skipped using a polishing compound as I have no safe way to prevent it from going inside the crank case.
If it leaks. It leaks.
It's dirt from the sandpaper. Need to spray it with brake clean. And then I got that 2nd scratch to work on. It's much lighter
