As >>28475621 said, an aluminium rad like you've found here >>28475711 is arguably the best option, but is pricey. If you're planning on keeping the car for longer than a decade or so, I'd get the aluminium, but with that being said, I'd flush the cooling system using the old rad first, then fit the new rad and fill it with pre-mixed coolant rather than tap water and concentrate. Tap water will eventually cause scale to build up on the inside of your fancy new radiator, and in roughly 10 or 15 years you'll probably see your cooling system start to lose its efficacy. I personally use Mazda's FL-22 coolant in my NA 'cause it's cheap as chips and you only need to change it every 10 years or so. MX5Parts sell it for around 15 quid, I think.

Anonymous No.28476398 >>28478678
Yeah please do not use tap water when filling your new radiator, you are just pissing away the robustness of any cooling system when you introduce scale.

Just get deionized water, it's like $3 a gallon.

2002, tuning it myself hopefully. It's a pnp so all I have to do is run a vac line from the capped nipple on the manifold to the nipple on the back of the ECU and it's off to the races. I plan on ditching the MAF but then I lose my nice intake. Been looking for a J pipe in aluminum 2.5" with a tight bend so I don't cross the rad anymore.

I have a gm iat that I apparently do not need, but I am going to keep it anyways in case my stock one goes out.

Thoughts on buying a cheap salvage title as a daily driver?
Anonymous No.28481787 >>28481816

Can be fine. Salvage title just means the insurance company wrote it off which for a old miat can be due to basically any body damage.

Biggest issue with salvage titles is know what exactly gave it that title, how it was repaired, and insurance. Lot of insurance companies wont touch salvage titles or will give you absurd quotes.

u have two fans. did at least one of them start spinning when the thermostat opened? The other one only runs if the A/C is on or if the engine gets even hotter than what 1 fan can control and then the ECU kicks on the 2nd fan.

versa tunes you get with versatuner and you need it got fab9 tunes anyway
on both faster accelerator response
you can feel more umf on both maybe more on fab9 MAYBE
you should get tune
you don't need full versatune
but versatune tune is open and you could edit it if have full program (if you know engine jumbo mumbo)
don't waste time with popcorn on stock exhaust, zero effect

Why are the gear ratios so fucked on automatics? The difference between 5th and 6th is like 250-500 rpm. You have to drop down two gears while cruising on the highway if you want to accelerate. I would've preferred a shorter 5th gear that puts the speedo at 3k rpm at 100km/hr and closer evenly spaced 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

If your fan was turning on before you replaced the rad, then chances are the thermostat is opening and with the larger rad it's not getting hot enough for the fan to switch on.
I think OEM core size is like 16mm, so if it's a stock motor it'll probably never get hot enough to trigger the fan just idling. I have one of these skidnation radiators and I think it's kind of overkill for a street car.
Check if you have a 90ΒΊC thermostat (stock temp afaik) and take it for a drive while keeping an eye on the temp gauge. As long as the engine warms up and the needle stays in the middle (or just short of the middle) you're probably fine.

NA for now just to get it running and driving, but FI is not off the table. Likely going to suck it up and buy an MS3Pro PNP for the VVT control instead of the significantly cheaper VVTuner, which opens the door for tuning FI later. I got a 3.6 ring and pinion from Mazmart and paid a friend to build it along with a Torsen carrier (my old diff was open). While I'm open to learning the skill of setting differential pinion preload, I don't want it to be on this one. Maybe on the old diff I just took out.

Definitely recommend going with the megasquirt, especially if you're even considering FI. I always wanted to eventually learn how to work on diffs, but my daily decided to make that decision for me when the rear end pinion bearing went bad last year. Honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting once I got into it, but it took me way longer than I anticipated. The shim pack that came with the kit had a single 3 thousandths shim and every other was 10 or 15, so I had to rebuild the whole stack just to adjust it slightly. I could've bought another pack, but the only ones that would work were over $100 when every other size was $10-15. Overall kinda terrible experience, will do again (when the front bearing goes bad). New diff cover looks sick, I rate the experience 6/10.

Anyone here have up-close-and-personal experience with the inside of Miata transmissions? Specifically an ND would be great, but I'll take any insight. I'm trying to understand how the input shaft bearing is lubricated. I thought it would be lubricated by the transmission oil, but then I watched this video (of a 5 speed, so not an ND but still a Miata):

https://youtu.be/u8rTYlK8Q0g?t=126 [Embed]

Picrelated is a couple frames from the video. In the top frame, it's showing the front of the input shaft bearing which has the ball bearings exposed. The second frame shows the back of the input shaft bearing, and you can see it doesn't seem to be open to the rest of the transmission. Can anyone explain? Does the input shaft bearing have its own sealed lubricant?

Just took my 2020 ND on a road trip, taking the odometer from 14.9k to 18k in the course of 6 days, and while it held up great, towards the end of the trip, I noticed basically every symptom of early input shaft bearing wear, which is not an ordinary mode of failure AFAIK, not to mention it's a 2020 which is supposedly one of the years without systemic transmission issues, so I'm trying to figure out what could have gone wrong.

Outstanding video, never knew there was such a closeup disassembly video of an ND transmission specifically, so will definitely bookmark it for future reference. It unfortunately doesn't have a closeup of the input shaft bearing (or countershaft bearing) though. But it does show they both sit nestled in specifically sized holes in the bell housing. So still leaves me wondering: how are they lubricated? If it's just the transmission fluid, how does it get into the bearing if they're closed on the side facing inward to the transmission? Or are both "faces" of the bearing open and I'm just seeing things wrong.
Anonymous No.28496988

I don't even know for sure there's anything wrong with my transmission. All I know is it sounds a little different now. It still shifts like a dream, no grinds no nothing. Could just be that it has gone from pristine to not-pristine after my trip, could be that the fluid got broken down a bit. Or, in my worst nightmare, it could be that some metal flakes worked their way into the input shaft bearing and it's now damaged. That's why I'm trying to figure out if that scenario is even physically possible.

Anonymous No.28497049

>It's sealed with that clean landing in front of the bearing
You're talking about the cover that goes between the bearings and the bell housing right? So that creates a sealed area with the gears and the bearings inside and the oil in with it, and everything inside that zone is lubricated by transmission oil. But in my screenshot here >>28496608 the bearing doesn't appear to be open on the side facing the gears, and the input shaft bearing and countershaft bearing both sit in tailor-made holes in the transmission housing. So are you saying it actually is open? Or at least not a fluid-tight seal? Does it rely on transmission oil to just seep its way past the edges of the bearing and into the bearing?

She picked the old one up on a whim at a used car lot in 2018 because my dad and I were tired of fixing her piece of shit Mercedes. Took me 3 years to talk her into it. Since the 2016 is 9 years old with 90k miles and she's now 68 years old, the new car will last her and be trouble free until she's 80+. At that point she probably won't be able to get in and out of it anymore and will have to get a sedan if she's still healthy and driving.

all jap cars have rust issues if they're old and if you live where the roads are salted or near the sea.
NC's "don't have issues" because theyre generally newer but I'm sure a few of them are showing their age now. Find a clean one and take care of it. Spray cavity wax or w/e on it.

NC's are *better*, obviously, owing to them being newer, but it's not as if rotten ones don't exist. They are more comfortable than NB's, though, being heavier and more softly sprung. My ex's mum has a very early one, and it was fine.

My NC is 17 years old, zero rust, but I don't drive it in the snow season. NC is so much fun to drive you don't care about how it looks. I think it's better than the ND except for the nose (ND better there by far). But the overall size is better on the NC and the rear is great .

Agree on the BRG. The flat paint looks good on an NA with its more classic Bri'ish roadster inspired lines, but I don't love it on the curvier design of the NB. The metallic Emerald Mica on the NB fits it far better. I don't think BRG would fit very well on the ND for the same reason.

but in my Haynes manual the wiring diagram for the engine cooling fan and the listed colours of its four wires are actually going the relay on the other end of the bank in my car.

JDM NB2 VVT 1.8 with a squaretop intake manifold (half a point higher compression than USDM, 10.5:1), no modifications except for using an OEM NB1 headgasket to better take advantage of the coolant reroute (and water neck delete), and a USDM NB2 exhaust manifold. Went for head studs anyway as I don't like reusing head bolts even when they're not torque to yield, and the ARP studs cost less than a set of OEM head bolts. Futureproofs it some too if I do decide to go turbo later. Also 6 speed and 3.6 swapping at the same time because I hate having money.

Add to that - I think I've isolated the issue to the radiator fan connector being faulty. 0v runs through it. I replaced the relay already and the fan fuse is fine according to multimeter.
I might have to buy a new connector for Β£9 and solder it onto the existing wire. There appears to be a clip-on for the connector, which in picrel is the black housing, but I think it'll likely be a solder job.

I would assume so yeah. The port on the head and the thermostat housing have the same bolt pattern so they'd both bolt up. I'd probably recommend the FM reroute instead though, the block off plate and the custom rear thermostat housing both have threaded holes for the stock sensor and a 1/8" NPT sensor respectively, plus extra ones for turbo coolant feed lines if that's your thing.

assuming NA/NB, reseal the oil pan RTV and half moons, rear main seal, and rear main seal carrier RTV on the new engine before it goes in, you have to either pull the engine back out or drop the subframe to do it later if it leaks. also a good time to do the coolant reroute since cleaning the sealing surface for the water outlet on the back of the head is kind of a pain with the engine in the car (still doable though). pulling the transmission with the engine is also easier than dicking around with the bell housing bolts and then trying to stab the input shaft back in when going back together in the car, just paint marker around where the PPF bolts to the transmission so it's easy to just bolt it back up into the alignment it had before

Not ideal, but so long as there's nothing higher than the bearing surface, it won't grenade the engine or anything.

>>28512871 is right in the sense that you shouldn't be grinding anything, use fine grit sandpaper to get the bevel down. Don't bother getting a crank yet; it's not ideal to be sanding any precision machined surface, but there's a non-0 chance that so long as there's no proud surfaces, you'll get away with it. Worse case is that it weeps some time later on down the line, but I wouldn't bother going nuclear and replacing the crank yet, not when this "free" fix might just work for you.

It's not mandatory, but the reason they tell you annually is because your oil will naturally take on *some* moisture from the environment, and a car that doesn't get driven long enough to heat up the oil and burn off that water will experience marginally worse wear and tear than normal. I myself change annually if I don't hit 3,000 miles, but it's not going to grenade your engine if you yourself don't do it for a few more months, but I wouldn't leave it much longer than that.
