how important is it to have the panels oriented the same way they're installed?

Anybody have any significant experience dealing with carbon seals?
The A/C on the Newport is working, however I had a leaking condenser o-ring. Fixed that, then the front seal on the compressor started leaking. It's a factory RV2 compressor that uses a carbon front shaft seal. I resealed the compressor a few years ago and it sat. Now this. You can get a new front seal for it that is apparently a different material now, no longer carbon. I took the front cover off the compressor and the carbon ring is basically locked onto the shaft by the keyway for the pulley. Can't really find a way to slip it off even at an angle. So I was hesitant to move any further on that.
Read some boomer lore on a Chrysler forum that said the seals get dry sometimes and if there's a loss in pressure in the system for whatever reason, it can cause the seal to leak. He said you can relube them and charge it up and it should hold. I greased the seal with bearing grease, instead of mineral oil. They're both petroleum based, so figured no harm there. The grease is thicker so I also figured that would be more optimal. Put it back together and it's holding now. Held 50 psi with shop air and held vacuum over night. Previously, it would lose pressure and vacuum overnight. Also sprayed down with soapy water before and after to confirm the leak and then no leak. So holding for now. For how long? Remains to be seen.
I did add oil to the system after flushing it and I checked, the oil pan in the compressor does have oil.
Anybody with experience in this area have any thoughts to share on it?
are there any pre smog cars you can expect to find unmolested and driveable for <9k?
>>28486619 (OP)I know this is for older cars but I'm strongly considering buying a 1985 Grand Marquis. Guy says it runs and drives, doesn't burn oil, passed smog, 200k miles.
Is there anything specific to this model I should know?
And please don't tell me about getting in over my head and shit, this would be my first project car but if it actually drives I'm just going to fix it up as I go. I'm not going to keep waiting years and years until I'm fully ready to take on a project car by which time they will have banned driving anyway
so yeah anything specific on an 85 Grand Marquis I should be looking for in terms of checking the car out before buying/test driving as well as repairing later down the road?

>85That'll be a flat tappet 5.0 with Central Fuel Injection (CFI), aka throttle body injection, powered by an Electronic Engine Control-IV (EEC-IV) with an Automatic OverDrive (AOD) behind it. Both will be tired at 200k. Assuming it's not yet huffing crankcase vapor out the filler cap and crankcase breather tube like it's coal fired I'd put a timing chain in it pretty quick since those nylon covered timing gears lose the nylon covering and the chain gets very slack. To the point it'll skip time. At the worst possible moment, of course. The Thick Film Ignition (TFI) module on the side of the distributor dies from heat so keep one around along with the 5.5mm socket the crews need.
The alternator it came with will have a two-post plug in the side and those like to overheat from the load and poor connection resistance and catch fire. You'll want to do a 3G conversion to get rid of that.
The ignition switch, not where you put the key but the switch that's further down the column likes to come apart and cause an intermittent electrical failure. It also carbon tracks inside and causes fires with the car just sitting there. Change it soon.
>>28496010CFI would be EEC-III, and it's a turd. at the first sign of any trouble, swap it for a carbureted 351+C4 with a 1 wire style GM alternator. the swap can be done entirely with stock parts cheaply. Don't invest in trying to keep the car stock.
>>28496014>CFI would be [only] EEC-IIIWrong
>>28496010thanks anon, hopefully it doesn't have transmission issues. I checked rockauto and the cost for the timing chain isn't too bad, so if I get it that'll be one of the first things I do.
Is there anything I can do to extend the life of the transmission beyond a rebuild or replacement? (for now, if I keep the car long term I'd want to rebuild it properly or have it replaced).

>>28498296Been a lot of that going around for years but especially since covid killed off the real cam and lifter companies. People used to think that modern oils lacked EP additives like ZDDP and molybdenum because that stuff doesn't play well with catalytic converters. Perhaps that was the cause 15-20 years ago but now it seems to happen regardless so people are back to thinking cam cores are soft and ground wrong on some lobes and the lifter bodies are too soft because they're now sourced from bottom-feeder Chinese companies.

>>28495315What the other dude said. If it holds pressure, it's good. You can swap the hell out of seals anyway. Remember even when freon got swapped to 134a, the only difference was the new mix ate the old seals so they needed to be replaced with modern material.
Guys, the vaccuum-powered popup headlights on my car seem to have stopped working. Both worked when I bought the car. One stopped working about a week ago, and now neither go. Seller told me he replaced the reservoirs and they look good. Does this mean I just have to start hose hunting and wire following?
>>28499818This is what smoke machines are for
I want to replace or rebuild the rear end of my 76 Corvette this summer. The mid late 70s, as you know, were brutal for performance. I got this car for $1500 when I was 17 with my dad and pretty much restored it in our barn. Still have it, want it to be a tire melting bitch like she deserves (my dad told me today I can use his workkshop). Before I do the engine upgrades, I want to make sure the rear end is appropriate for the power I am shooting for (probably a stroked 383 from the 350, a pretty aggressive cam, new cylinder heads, intake, etc). No point in beefing the engine up and then having the weak rear end, and since the engine upgrades will cost more time and money, the rear end is a better place to start AND it will make it much more enjoyable to drive right away, even with the current power it puts out. My question for anons: have you guys ever driven or heard of what it is like to live with an older CSB that has a pretty aggressive 3.90/4.11 rear end? Obviouly highway driving will be loud and RPMs high, but I don't plan on using this as a highway cruiser (country roads 60mph, limited highway driving at 75mph). I feel like I should go for the 4.11
>>28499894I have a 73 with a stroker 383 but I don't know the rear end that's in it. Still used the Muncie 20 4 speed transmission. Fantastically fun to drive, though.
>>28499897Forgot to mention it's about 3k at 70mph so you should be able to calculate the ratios from that. I wouldn't go much lower. It already feels like the throws are too short. You're in 4th before 40mph.
>>28499897>>28499900Zesty and based anon. Did you buy it stroked out or did you take the 350 and do it yourself? Your rear end, if stock, is probably 3.55 with the stick shift. Mine is actually an auto-when I was looking at project cars I actually test drove a 74 with a stick and I couldn't drive it-I am 6'3, and back then was 230lbs, with size 15 feet. There was no room to comfortably shift even around the block; trying to do it while hooning around would be impossible. Can't complain though, the TH350 I have with a shift kit is pretty damn fun.
>>28499904I have the opposite problem. I'm like 5' 10 and 195 pounds and need to sit with a straight back. I got short legs and long arms like a caveman. Trucks and jeeps are easy to shift but the stock vette seats were way too laid back for me. I had to max out the rake on them to be comfortable.
Got it as another dude's project car that he had for 13 years. Only actually owned it for about a month so far. Fantastically fun car, though. Love it to death. I am sad about the headlights though
>>28499818
>>28499905Ah, jealous. Don't think many old classic cars will ever work for me with a stick. Funny enough when I rebuilt mine with my dad, I had to cut the brake pedal in half and make a pad for it because my foot would hit the throttle and the brake since it is so big.
Good steal. The vacuum system was pretty ingenious back in the day but it is a bitch to troubleshoot. If the reservoirs are new and he isn't full of shit, you gotta check the relays, the actuators, and the overide switch. the over ride switch on my C3 is under the steering column. Barring that, time to start working through the hoses anon. Don't worry, trouble shooting vacuum problems is a right of passage. I spent many hot summer days in that barn while my dad patiently held my hand and told me what to look for as the FUCKING lights wouldn't go up.

>>28499894The final drive ratio will be determined by the engine you build or buy. As a rule, smaller displacement with a more aggressive cam will need shorter gears than something larger and tamer. Cam companies have general guidelines in their catalogs on what kind of rpm at 60 mph (with the trans in Direct) would be best for the cam chosen. Once you settle on a build you'll be able to figure the final drive ratio.
>>28500653kek, sick color anon. The 73 I liked because it has the rear chrome bumpers. Maybe down the line I could find a 69 to turn into a retarded project. what coil overs did you get? Did you keep the generic leaf springs in the back?
>>28500657Ah thanks anon, I knew about the smaller displacement/lower gears but the chart helps. I am leaning towards the 3.90, and even if I build or stroke out my current 350 or just buy a turn key crate engine, they all will be within the same ball park of power and torque.

>>28500696Very nice, is that the stock blue color on it? My car was originally a very 1970s cremeish white over tan. I was missing interior parts and just painted everything black to match then did the blue color. The chrome bumpers are sexy. You gonna do side exhaust? If I had a chrome bumper one I would be very tempted. You already have the chrome luggage rock might as well go full extravagant C3 and add giant chrome side pipes. Does yours have AC, and does it also have the cool fiber optics on the dash to show you the status of lights?
>>28501183Repaint but was always some kind of blue. Tan interior. No fiber optics. Was optioned with an AC originally because I have the panel, but that didn't make it to the engine swap. That's something I gotta put in later. AC but no power steering from the factory was a wild choice. I'm glad to have the second in it now at least.
Don't think I want sidepipes as its already the right amount of loud for me. It would look cool, but I don't think I would enjoy cruising in it as much.

I haven't bought a used car on craigslist before, do I need to bring the guy to the DMV or AAA to do the paperwork or can I just get the signed title and go there myself?
>>28501615>can I just get the signed title and go there myself?I had to do this recently with my stingray. You just have to make sure the title is clean with no liens on it, and signed by the previous owner when you go to the DMV. If the owner keeps the old plates you have to buy new plates. You will have to pay registration even if the old registration is still good for awhile. You will need proof of insurance even if it's not for the new vehicle. You will need a good picture of the VIN if it's before the VIN standardization. You will need to pay taxes on whatever you put the sale price as. Then they'll mail the new title to your mailing address.
At least that's the process in Texas.
God, you make me want to get my old 1980 Lebaron running again. She was my very first car, and I still have her under the carport at the family farm. It was a mistake to leave her in my Dad's hands. He let a goddamn woodrat build a nest under the hood. Gonna need a full rewire.

So i don't understand this. do pre smog cars require super high octane fuel now because now we don't have lead like they were built for?
>>28504866go ask chatgpt nigger
>>28504866Not really, the biggest problem with engines designed for leaded fuel is that unleaded fuel causes the valve seats to wear away or recess. A few leaded engines that use aluminium heads can be fine, as some of the valve seat inserts used in those aluminium heads are already hardened, but any leaded engine with cast iron heads will need either a lead additive of some kind in the fuel, or ideally hardened valve seats.
>>28504866Octane has nothing to do with lead additives (that were used to lubricate valve seats).
Any vintage engine thats had a head job in the last 30 years has had hard seats installed that do not require leaded fuels.
Ethanol is an issue for older rubber components in the fuel system- pump diaphragm, hoses, needle&seats.
Ethanol also has a different specific gravity (think of it as weight per volume or energy per volume) so even though on paper it "can" produce more power than gasoline, a carburetor has to be returned for even E10 fuels (typically re-jetting to increase fuel flow).
90% of vintage cars were designed for 87 octane.
>>28504866A few of the really high performance pre-1971 cars might, but it's generally not a problem.

In other news, I finally got my Volga running and idling almost like god intended. Went through 3 carbs. Bit the bullet with a chink weber clone and it worked almost straight out of the box. Should've went with a genuine weber right from the get go and not fuck around with "original" Russian carbs and whatnot.
https://files.catbox.moe/8xtf9m.mp4
Main issue with the Russian carbs was that they had this weird vacuum/electric idle solenoid system, almost like an ICV from a fuel injection engine.
When the throttle was closed, it pressed a microswitch in the carb body that sends a signal to some sort of relay, that in turn operates the vacuum solenoid, which in turn opens the vacuum valve in the carb to let air in once the RPM drops bellow a certain threshold.
It's a retarded system, maybe it works even in practice on a car equipped with such a system, but this is way too much fancy tech for a 60s Soviet design imo.

Those tiny European shits are incredibly charming and "soulful" for the lack of a better word.
On the Volga, they never officially sold the 24 over here in Finland, so getting parts is kinda difficult.
Russia is not an option due to EU sanctions, the ukraine is not an option due to their own problems, that leaves you whatever NOS parts they still have in the baltics. These old 1st and 2nd series cars are the most difficult to get parts for, the latter 24-10 and onwards cars are easier as they're less archaic in design, ditching drum brakes for disks and kingpin suspension for MacPherson struts and regular front linkages.
That being said the crafty Russians compiled a massive list of off brand parts that fit the Volga with minor modifications.
God damn this compressor is being extra gay. Anybody got experience with carbon seals?
Replaced the leaking condenser o-ring, then the front carbon seal on the compressor started leaking. Replaced it with a new santech seal specifically for this compressor. Leaking really bad now. I'm wondering if somehow I got it at the wrong depth. There's a spring on it so I'm guessing it has to but up against the inner bearing race to put pressure on the seal, but I dunno. I need to pull it back off and look at the length of both seals.
Do I need to run the compressor to mate the carbon seal to the steel plate?

what's an inexpensive way to get a worn and rusted car somewhat glossy again? I have a project car with really bad paint that's worn through in some places and oxidized everywhere. I don't think there is any clear coat left on the exterior of the car.
I'm going to have to properly repaint it at some point, but until then, what can I use to protect what's left and make it look a bit less dull? And yeah, Soviet shit is agricultural in a sense, a lot of nigrigged solutions and off brand parts along with some "farm ingenuity" is needed with these things.
For example the ZMZ-24 engine has a coolant drain valve on the block for some odd reason with a very specific tapered thread, probably a bespoke thread. It's probably there for the mechanic to attach a hose to and drain the coolant without making a mess.
I looked for that tap far and wide, only to somehow end up at this one garage brewery nearby that had a very similar tap they use for draining beer barrels and containers with the exact same thread.

Just keep it topped off - obviously, check it before you buy. If it smells burned, walk away. Same thing if the fluid is blood red and brand new, or really thick - the owner changed the fluid and added some kind of stopgap-shit, to keep it functioning.
