I am looking into getting into iRacing but the pricing of getting to compete in anything but miatas is tremendous.

Is it really worth it compared to any other sim?

Anonymous No.28509347

It's easier to just hop on a race multiplayer compared to other sims for multiplayer. The FFB is decent enough with the MAIRA third party app, but you really have to devote yourself to iracing to get used to its quirky physics as nothing else really drives like it, and it's not very intuitive to drive.

I think the real shitty thing about iracing is to make the UI somewhat decent, you're gonna have to pay yet another subscription for some overlays. If you only plan on racing one or two series, the cost isn't a whole lot more up front if you just buy one car, which you should, as using a meta car for each week doesn't make sense unless you are an alien. Then the real cost would be the tracks and the sub fee. When it comes to tracks, only buy ones that have good participation (ex: spa, suzuka, daytona) and stay away from the ones you literally never heard of because people do not want to race on those tracks and I wish iracing would stop adding them and forcing them onto people.

Like a quarter of the IMSA races this season dont even take place on north american tracks, and instead they are putting stuff like MotorLand Aragón which sounds like someshit out of the lord of the rings. Of course it only barely had enough people registering for that race to compose of one split.

EA has no idea what to do with the franchise but still feels the need to pump out a new game every other year or so and the result is always the same, a subpar title that gets poorly received or flies under the radar due to lack of support from both the fans and EA.

i'm not really into drifting, but from what I heard it's harder to do in gt7 than in ac. you can setup any car you'd like though for drifting, and pretty much any sports car you can imagine is in that game. you wont have access to true drift tracks or touges, just regular circuits that might be decent for it like tsukuba, s curves at suzuka, fuji's 100r corner, etc..

>Was it even a sim?
it tried to be, but my personal issue with it was that it didn't really feel great to drive and the ffb was lacking. a lot of people complain about the "floaty" feeling of the cars in the madness engine games, AMS2 included. I think AMS2 handles it nicely and fixes some of pcars1/2's problems, but it feels like a more realistic version of a sega arcade racer with how over the top the handling is. basically, GT3 cars have a tendency to just slide all the time when they should be planted, and you can just slide through each corner, a similar issue that FM has but the way it's executed in AMS2 feels amazing on a wheel. not really realistic though.

Have you tried NOT supporting shitty companies yourself? Of course not, you lack any semblance of self-control, you have to CONSOOM and then be mad that the obvious thing happened anyway. Daddy government has to fix everything for you, right? Just ask for more laws to brute force your petty desires on irrelevant things. You know the real answer to things like good games being held hostage by shitty companies is piracy? This is exactly the situation where piracy is morally acceptable. Support some crack group or decomp-recomp project or something. There, problem solved.

yes, i didn't buy the games
but instead of changing, the company just proceeded to double down and now wonders why the bottom just fell out of the video game industry after making nothing but shithouse fotm crapware for over a decade

also quite frankly the issue ultimately is piracy. people want to play a game long after it's stopped being supported, which means they want to distribute it themselves. this might not be a problem for quake or doom or half life but a game with licensed cars and music is another ball of wax entirely, because now they're distributing the intellectual property of the car manufacturers and musiicians and not compensating them for it. SHOULD those people get paid for this sort of thing? no, but currently, legally, yes. for skg to succeed they need to change copyright law so that the assets of the games don't need to be changed when the licenses for irl logos and likenesses expire. this is why you can't buy outrun 2006, why gt and forza games can't be rereleased, why forza content gets yoinked off xbla, etc.
we need to end copyright license rugpulling. if you sign a deal for your brand or whatever to appear in a game it should be forced to remain in perpetuity so long as appropriately credited.

Yeah I agree the current copyright license laws are ridiculous, but since they won't change any time soon, the only viable, realistic solution (and not a perfect solution, but the best we have right now) is piracy, like it or not. I don't like it either. I would go out of my way to support a good developer studio, but sometimes that becomes impossible or, unfortunately, counter-productive for the state of the industry as a whole. No one pirates Valve games claiming they have abusive practices, right? But Ubishit games? You're morally obligated to pirate them.

and then so they're morally obligated to make their games break down on purpose after a while and make pirating them useless because they won't work without online services. and then we're morally obligated to not buy those games because those features are anti-consumer and stupid. THEN the company actually starts losing money. we are here.
software piracy is unironically moral and just, but in my opinion if i don't like a game enough to buy it then it's not worth pirating, either. i pirate games as demos so when i have an opinion on a game i can say i did in fact play it, but let's not beat around the bush, the entire reason for games being designed that way is to curtail piracy. and it works. by tying even the simplest game into centralized servers you control who gets to play it and when. simply having barebones multiplayer with an account system is the best drm imaginable, because even the average skiddy pirate is not going to bother exposing their computer to fuck knows what trying to make all that shit work for free.

Really boils down to what you're looking for.
There are still ways to get decent online racing in other games, but iRacing does have the edge when it comes to how easy it is to simply hop into a ranked race for your skill level in a good variety of cars.
So it depends on how you feel about iRacing's handling, because personally I feel like you have to spend way more time on a new car/track combo in iRacing to get close to the limit compared to the other games/sims that I've played.
Occasionally going past the limit in other games just results in a micro-correction or caught slide depending on how far past the limit you go, but in iRacing it's almost a guaranteed spin. This makes it much harder to dance on the limit of the grip, and at least for me personally, resulted in me just underdriving the car most of the time.
TL;DR iRacing service good (albeit expensive), handling not so good. Buy it if really want online racing available at almost any hour, and you can tolerate the physics.

The onboard telemetry that you see for most IRL onboard videos is not very accurate. Modern F1 for instance has shown it as almost an on/off switch until literally the previous race at Silverstone.
So not only is it usually a bit out of sync, but unlike in sims where the brake bar = brake pressure, IRL you have no idea how their brake is set up.
James Baldwin (does IRL GT3 racing) talks a bit about this. https://youtu.be/6G8k0nKq-Ws

>75% instead of 100%
Are you watching iRacing videos perchance? Every sim handles braking differently, in AC and especially ACC, the ideal way to brake is to hold the brakes at a high pressure for a relatively long time while trusting the ABS to do most of the work for you.
In iRacing, doing that is slower in cars with ABS, and touching 100% brake pressure in a car WITHOUT ABS is almost a guaranteed lock-up unless you only very momentarily touch 100% initially in a car with high downforce. (More downforce = more grip = can brake harder)
Turning the wheel while fully depressing the brake will simply lead into a lock-up (or the ABS engaging constantly trying to save your life, leading into unpredictable rotation and/or understeer depending if you're racing in ACC or iRacing). If you have doubts regarding being fully on the brakes whilst turning, then the easiest way to prove/disprove it is to simply try it out yourself. Go into your sim of choice, slap on Spa, and proceed to brake at 100% pressure while turning into every corner. If your brakes don't lock up, you'll be whipping the car around and into a barrier.
The YouTube coaches aren't lying to you, it just doesn't make sense to you yet, and it's wise to consult IRL videos to see how the pros do it, but without knowing the context behind them and the theory behind trailbraking, it all becomes a bit confusing instead.
Sorry for the long explanation.

Ah I see, yeah that does make sense then. I'm not very good at ACC (for reference, my quali time in ACC at Spa is a 2:16.7 with the 296), but in my time racing in ACC, I could tell that it was very sensitive to proper trailbraking technique. I used to drop off my brakes somewhat abruptly at the end (I'd trailbrake to about 10% pressure and then release, which lead to understeer from the fronts popping back up), but now I'm much smoother with my braking thanks to ACC.

I'm within the 101% - 102% range, yeah, but it's still a way off of the top times.
It feels extra bad when you feel like you're already reaching your limit but then you search for a benchmark and it's miles away somehow.

Yeah but iRenting is iRenting and ACC is ACC. I'm significantly slower in iRacing because it feels much harder to approach the limit without binning it. I mean, sorry to say but most games are mediocre and deserve to fall into obscurity. ''Preservation'' can easily turn into an obsession of collecting trash. I believe that, in most cases, what is worth being preserved will be preserved somehow. Nature...finds a way. I'm upgrading my PC specifically for emulation. >KLJP
>hirochi talent (rebadged subaru sambar truck)
>hirochi CCF (restyled nd miata)
>ibishu claria
>90s etk k-series (slightly restyled bmw z3)
>capsule bus
>gavril vertex (rebadged ford focus, never used it myself but its one of the most popular beamng mods ever, has a shitton of weird configs like a plane)
>etk 900-series
>gavril huntsman
>TAZ pack (2 lada inspired soviet shitboxes, surprisingly high quality for what it is)
>blackpool superlite (rebadged lotus seven)
>procyon centauri (this ones a bit outdated)
if you dont like fictional stuff theres also plenty of real cars on the forums & 3rd party sites, oldfullsize is the only really high quality (free) one i can remember right now, its getting a remaster to bring it up to par with the modern versions of beam
theres not very many "dev quality" maps that i can remember off the top of my head like there are with cars, but i like the SRP map on the forums, polish roads is also a really popular & high quality one, theres also plenty of uploads of real world tracks like the burgerking on the forums
im probably forgetting a lot here but thats what i can remember off the top of my head. someone else probably knows more about this than i do

Rather see Genki finish this game and work on a new Kaido Battle/TXR Drift.
Itd probably take forever to come out because they laser scanned the courses in the old games and havent had a re-scan for them since, unlike the Shutoku Expressway which they have remastered a bunch through the years.

Sure, fair enough, but my point is that TXR isn't really a racing game, its an RPG with a racing game shell aesthetics. You're not challenged by a detailed, realistic physics engine, or by technical tracks, or even by strategic decision making. All you do is grind, upgrade your car, defeat faster oponents, grind some more, watch some weebshit animu dialog, upgrade, repeat. You could take away or automate the actual ''gameplay'' and not much would change, the only real input you have as a player is choosing your cars, upgrade paths, tunning and sequence of adversaries to defeat. I that's your thing, fine, but its not what I look for in a racing game.

if your car is capable of more than 120mph the shutoko is pretty difficult. fast + narrow + unpredictable traffic. the Wangan specifically is piss easy but the rest of the roads are deceptively simple.
