Before 2000 Sega had "mysterious benefactors" and had huge capital and rockstar employees despite really high expenditures. Yu Suzuki drove a Ferrari to work in the fucking mid-'90s when the Japanese economy was in the shit.
Then at some point around '99 or so apparently one of the benefactors died or otherwise pulled out, Sega could not surmount their absolutely retarded (lack of) budgeting up to that point, and that's actually why the company went under. It had absolutely nothing to do with the Dreamcast's success or failure as a console but instead was a much-deserved crash after an entire decade of trying to keep the bubble from popping. They were always going to fail.
