I disagree, I find real life driving way easier and more fun.

The only unfun parts is trying to find a parking spot in one of those tight-ass lots where you've got zero room to wide turn in, or when you've got a car with one of those bitch manual transmissions that throws a fucking tantrum and stalls if you lower the clutch at anything more than a goddamn glacial pace or even think about touching the brake.

Otherwise broom broom, motherfucker. I'll take real life any day over GTA's shit physics.

The instant physical feedback to everything you do in a real car is what makes it so easier to drive than in vidya. I'm sure it's easier to lose control, slide, stall and whatnot in vidya because you simply aren't driving something that at least tries to emulate a real car.
Do modern setups even vibrate or have something like that?

Respectfully, you're just not very good at driving a car with a manual transmission. Unless you have legitimate engine or clutch problems, it's driver error.

Anon, are you aware of where your hands and feet are without having to look at them? It's the same for knowing where the corners of your car are. If you genuinely cannot figure out where the corners of your car are after a few practice runs of parking, and especially after a few weeks of driving the same car, then you severely lack in your ability to understand 3d space. Which literally means you're a woman.

Post hands NOW.

Go take real driving lessons. Even if your dad is telling you the right stuff, you're not absorbing it at all and it's making you a driver who's vindictively okay with not understanding where there car is relative to the road because your dad makes you upset when you go driving with him. That's fucking dangerous. And if you find out after getting a real teacher that your dads also a retarded driver, you get to smugly rub it in that you know how to actually drive and he doesn't.

You gonna tell the kid you run over and kill in 5 years the same thing after your dad got mad at you and you sperg out behind the wheel? I'm sure he'll understand.

You're using a vehicle capable of instantly murdering an entire group of people, grow the fuck up you fucking pussy and actually take it seriously for a second. You can KILL SOMEONE, but "oh i won't learn because my daddies mean and if i tell him i want a new teacher he'll slap me" GET YOUR OWN CAR THEN.

With this attitude behind the wheel no wonder your dads flipping out on you, he's trying to save a pedestrians life.

If i was your dad i'd bar you from it, judging from your replies you aren't remotely responsible enough to drive.

Just remember, when you're in jail for killing someone with your car, "my dad was mean" is not a viable defense, but you'll probably get locked up when you kill your dad in 5 years, so just don't drive before then.

Texas here. You only have to take the paper/computer test, if a parent/relative "teaches" you how to drive. They just have to keep records of teaching you for 5 years or something like that.

This is good for keeping filthy illegal immigrants from getting IDs and driving cars that let them out of the barrios. They can only ride the bus from one shit hole to another.

Because the laws of physics apply? Otherwise I genuinely eat shit whenever i try to play a simulator game despite being extremely capable of hooning irl. I chalk it up to the lack of feedback in simulator games (unless you spend thousands on one of those moving rigs). When i drive irl i can feel the chassis vibrate in particular ways that give me hints as to how much grip my tyres have, i can feel slight shifts is movement, i can feel the car lurch under its weight when i take turns, i can FEEL the speed im doing.

In a simulator all I have is visuals and i very quickly understeer into a wall as i underestimate the speed in which im travelling.

>parallel park
There's a formula where you pull up alongside the car like 3 feet from them, turn wheel all the way to the side and reverse until you're at like 45 degrees, straighten up and reverse until your side mirror is next to their rear light or something. I forget.

But you can bitch it out: parking too far from the curb is a minor penalty, hitting the curb is an automatic fail, so you can just eat the minor.
>3 point turn
Exactly how it sounds, turn all the way to side, spin wheel and reverse a bit, go forward.
Important is that most test instructors really want you to look out the rearview window. Same with parallel park now that I think about it.
>how big the car is.
Hit something.
Not something solid, drive close to a low hanging tree and hit some leaves along the opposite side, that'll make it easier to visualize exactly how big the car feels. Or set up something soft to bump into so you can feel where the perimeter of the car is.
Otherwise it can feel different inside the car compared to how it looks on the outside, I getcha.
>insurance
They don't check that for tests, someone letting you borrow their car is fine enough.

How do you walk downstairs without breaking your neck with this lack of spatial awareness? Want to learn how not to be too far left or too far right? Practice. Go to a parking lot and practice parking drills until you can make the corners your car come within an inch of a cone without hitting it consistently. If you cannot, or are unwilling to learn this (DON'T TELL ME AN EXCUSE ABOUT YOUR DAD THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT) at some point in your life, then you do not respect the dangers of cars and are undeserving of the privilege (not the right, the privilege) of operating a motor vehicle. It's as simple as that.

You are complaining you aren't allowed on the basketball team because dribbling is too hard and your coach yells at you that you're doing it wrong, but you're not willing to buy your own ball, find a different coach, or even look up youtube videos teaching you how to do it. You just make excuses, like "how is anyone supposed to dribble? Dribble to left you lose the ball, dribble to right you lose the ball, don't bounce it hard enough you lose the ball, bounce it too hard you lose the ball. This is bs i hate my coach i can't wait until he's dead"

The difference is basket ball isn't capable of plowing through an entire group of school children, or causing a school bus to crash or some dad trying to go home to die when you fuck up. A car is. Learn some fucking respect and stop making excuses, you're actively making black youth look fucking retarded.

4. Put in reverse
5. Turn wheel right
6. Drive in reverse until you have enough clearance
7. Put in drive
8. Turn left as need and straighten out
9. Drive

Imagine you're using an invisible parking spot / drive way to turn around. You turn into it and then you back out the other way.

Here's a fact for you man. So is 50% of the people you see every single day. They are just as jaded, indifferent and defeated as you are, and some are actually more jaded, indifferent and defeated. Why the fuck are north americans like this? I'm just glad i'm a safe and attentive rider. Jealousy over being able to move past a singular car is insane. My government (leaf....) won't pass lane filtering (under 30km/h) laws SOLELY because the rage of drivers will actually cause deaths when they forget about the law over the winter and see the first lane filtered at a red light in the spring. They even fully understand why it's safer and want to implement it, but cannot due to road rager potential. What the actual fuck?

If you're the type that gets INSANELY FURIOUS because a motorcycle got ahead of you, buy your own bike instead of trying to instantly kill them.

Cars are big, "small" movements in a hydraulic steering system equals a much bigger movment of the wheels. I guarantee you if you came to a dead stop and got out everytime someone tells you you're too far left or right, you'd instantly see you're too far left or right.

One full sesh of parking lot drills will solve this, why do people absolutely 100% refuse to do parkinglot drills???? Driving forwards fast is the easiest part, turning and driving slowly are the hard parts man.

Driving is one of the easiest things to do in the entire world. It has the lowest skill ceiling of anything in the world now, which is why so many accidents happen. If every dumbfuck or brownoid can drive to their hearts content its a recipe for disaster to the sane or sensible drivers on the road or random pedestrians. The absolute worst thing in the world is to be going about your day and some asshole rear ends you or weaves in between traffic going 90 MPH or above.

"With no curb" still means the side of the road, just the side of the road with no curb. Like a country road, or an alley way.

You just point your wheels in a way that ensures your car rolls OUT of the street. If there's a curb, you car gets stuck on that. If there's no curb, your car just rolls into a field instead of into traffic.

Most people have problems with roads and signs, driving isn't the issue. The real issue is how retarded roads have become when your town/county/city/state introduces these new roads and lines with extra blind spots and turning everything into a downtown area and fuck you if you have an accent on these dangerous roads with blind spots everywhere. Then fining you for not knowing the new rules made in 60 seconds for these new roads and line. If it was just a few simple roads out in the country, no one would have any problems driving.

My grandparents used to always tell me how retarded the roads in their area became compared to their times.

In Canada not only do they test for that but also do all the tests out in the streets instead of a dedicated road test area, so you will be parallel parking behind some guy's car and in front of his house likely. They generally do these parts of the test in residential areas during the week so likely there won't be others driving there but you still do most of the driving on actual main roads.
They also go out of their ways to make you drive in front of schools and playgrounds to make sure you are going the right speed too

You still have an examiner next to you and insurances are mandatory here, I'm assuming it'll get dealt with easily.
I'm sure the regular parking at the end of the exam is more dangerous than the parallel parking because for the parallel the instructor chooses the spot, which is wherever he thinks you can make it but the last parking is in a regular parking stall but with a fuckton of other student drivers taking their tests or waiting to start. That and lots of people walking to and from their cars constantly.

You can hear the RPM going high, anon. If it's going mrrrrrmrrrrrrrr then it's low RPM, when it's going mrrwwWWWEEEEEEEEE then the RPM is hitting like 2.5-3k rpm and it's time to shift up. Big rpm: loud and high pitched. You'll have RPM on your dash if you want to sneak a glance.
You don't have to be too exact, if it's above like 1.5-2k rpm then the car won't be mad at you. You only have to be (slightly) careful shifting down because that's how you blow the transmission (just don't be going 70mph and shift to first gear).

Hang in there, anon, you'll get there.
If you can convince someone to just sit in the driver's seat and look at their phone while you do a few calm laps around the block or through some suburbs just learning to handle a car, that'll make things much easier. Once just the act of driving is mostly muscle memory it cuts the stress of city driving into a tenth of what it is when you're stressed about maintaining speed and not hitting anything.

Old manuals fucking suck. I had my driving lessons in a new car and it was so fucking easy to pull away, I think the ECU helps you out by automatically applying a bit of throttle to get you going, just need to raise the clutch to the bite point and you're off.
But these old shitters stall immediately if you aren't giving it a good amount of throttle, hill starts are fucking impossible.

That's not how it works here unfortunately, you can't just learn with anyone, it has to be an officially licensed driving instructor from a driving school, and they structure your regimen in accordance with certain laws that state what you have to do for how many hours.

I would say to not worry about it THAT much. Obviously err on the side of below if you're in a place that's anal about enforcing speeds, otherwise try to adjust pedal pressure every 10-20 seconds to find that sweet spot instead of trying to instantly find it, because your speed is always on a kind of delay to your last pedal adjustment so you're always going to be over or undershooting.

>I get driven around like somebody important.
Same bro.
When I was in service it was really rare for someone there not to have driven anything ever (but then again being a virgin or a non alcohol drinker was rare too), and we got trained on humvees and lmtv's and a tracked transport.
Shit took like 5 minutes per joe, a sergeant sat next to each of us, showed what part makes it go forward, made us do a lap, boom we were licensed for that vehicle.
That was my first time driving. I stressed a bit and stumbled around trying to start it but didn't fuck up too hard so the sgt took it like "Heh bigger than the shitboxes you're used to eh?"
Didn't have to sit behind a wheel again for a year or so.
I was on staff duty this one time, a sergeant major needed transportation from battalion building to the field so they told me to gear up and take him there.
I sucked at driving so much the big guy probably had vietnam ptsd flashbacks next to me, so he asked me to swap places. I was stuck with him and he ended up driving me around for the rest of the day, and my job was to sit in the passenger seat of the humvee and guard it.
Ever since then I was known as the guy who's so important a sergeant major drives him around.

Driving is dead simple when you make the effort to do it correctly. If you're not speeding, if you brake at the appropriate times and follow the directions printed on the signs then you won't get into trouble of your own doing. All of the dangerous situations I've encountered while driving came about because I placed myself into them, although I'm still mad as fuck at the two retarded ouzo smugglers who I've encountered literally parked before a blind curve on the undivided highway near me. Should I have crossed into the opposite lane before the blind turn to pass these cocksmokers? No. Would it be reasonable to fucking sit there and wait for these dipshits who were nowhere in sight to return to their cars? Also no I think.

I swear people drove like this in Germany but it's like something I never thought about for decades and it just popped up in my head one day and I thought maybe they taught this everywhere but switched at different times because it seems psycho that when you have two viable options but it only works if everyone on the road uses the same option that virginia would have decided to teach us option B while everyone else learns option A.

Addendum: There is actually a law that explicitly states that left turning cars have to pass in front of each other.
And I just found out that it has been like that since 92.
And I also found out that the tangential (front) turning is called "american" turning because it was introduced by the occupiers after the war.
In fact, the non-tangential turning (behind) was the very old "german" way of turning.

You won't unless you actively practice navigation without your phone. A few months ago I heard of a study showing that gps navigation makes your spatial awareness worse and it's not just kids coming up dumb, people who learned to drive in the past before cell phones are also impacted. You have to put work in if you want to learn navigation and have to keep at it on occasion because it's a depriciable skill. Landmarks are important. It can be a little much having to look for a certain street name on a sign while actually driving so you learn to look for landmarks like businesses or that the road you want is the first right after two lefts close together.

USA is Brazil 2.0 because there is just no cohesion or unity whatsoever turning you all into paranoid, trigger happy schizos. It shows best in how your obese cops handle things as they have 0 de-escalation training and just shoot first and ask questions later.

You quoted the wrong post, Johnny.

>Also people don't flip like a switch from one ingrained method to another because a law has changed.
In traffic? You bet your ass. Hell, what would you do if you had to drive in Bongland? Take three years until you get accustomed to riding on the wrong side? Was funny driving in Ireland for the very first time and constantly hitting the driver's door because I wanted to shift (because that fucking limey prick didn't have any automatics left).

That said, I explicitly wrote in my post that the "front" turning was introduced after war. It has only been mandatory since 92.
I will ask my parents about it though. Shame this thread is about to die, so I probably won't be able to relay the answer in time.

My MVR is clean now, but in my early 20's I got so many speeding tickets that they suspended my license. The funny part is that they forgot to send me the letter that told me my license was suspended, and in the ~8 months afterwards I didn't get pulled over even once. Didn't realize I was driving illegally until I moved states and tried to transfer my license.

This was also in the period of my life where my favorite thing to do was drive drunk, or on LSD, or on cocaine, or on molly, or on some combination of those things, but I never got pulled over while fucked up because I always made sure to follow every rule exactly.

If you have been driving since 94, it had been two years since the law's introduction (or change). That's enough time for everyone. Or rather should be, but let's not get into how many people should NOT be allowed to drive.
Now what I can believe is that cases where something happened were treated a bit more leniently, at least in the transition time.

You need to be able to:
>jumpstart a car
>change a tire
>put air in a tire
>check oil
>fill fluids
This is baseline necessary. Relatively easy things that help a lot:
>change headlights
>change oil
>replace windshield wipers
>replace brake pads/rotors
>replace spark plugs
>check codes
>patch a tire
>fix a burnt fuse

Some of this is now impossible on some vehicles due to ever-increasing jewery of automobile manufacturers, of course.

I always always always fail this step. Especially when starting from park to the 1st gear.

Do those same steps without the accelerator a few times. The clutch will start to grab and you'll very slowly start to move before the car jerks and stalls if you continue lifting. Remember the point where that happens and focus there when using both pedals.
Or just load up the revs and dump it all at once if you want, that's always cool.

huh?
it's all about the timing really - it's best if you rev to the same RPMs every change and be swift so as to start letting off the clutch while the rpm meter is still dropping
then at this point you figure out which gear at what speed has what rpm and you'll eventually hone into the right timing

I have severe arachnophobia, so if I were to drive, seeing any spider in my car would cause an immediate accident if it's close to me, or at the very least cause me to stare at it if its not close to make sure its not getting to me, which would be more distracting than a phone. Hell I doubt I'd even let it sit, I'd probably just instantly slam on the brakes so I can spray raid on the thing, which could cause other issues.

My mon was always a psycho when she drove. She didn't rage, but she was a nervous wreck and constantly screamed at everyone else around her. There'd be a dude like two lanes over riding slightly away from the center and she'd go
>what the fuck is wrong with that guy? he's obviously drunk
Any time someone got next to her she'd slam on her brakes because "he's obviously about to cut me off." A car anything less than two full car lengths behind was "riding my fucking ass." She'd come home from work and talk for like 40 minutes about how stupid everyone else in the town was driving, daily.

Nah bro speed changes severity of accident. Crashing into boar at 90kmh is vastly different from crashing into it at 70 or even 80.
At 70 car is totalled but you are fine while at 90 you are fucked. So you should adapt your speed to circumstances and speed limits are generally logical in normal countries.

the limit is all encompassing and has to keep the average driver from killing themselves or other people. this means that everyone from a professional F1 driver to a 3 time DUI convicted 86 year old grandma with cataracts has to be covered under one blanket ruleset. it's more of a suggestion in most places because it's almost impossible to lose control of your vehicle at or under 55MPH if road conditions are clear unless there's something physically or mentally wrong with you.

>people didn't block intersections
If there's any single thing I hate the most in drivers and burn with an anger of thousand suns towards, it's this. Stop. Entering. Intersections. You. Can't. Leave. No, green light does not mean you must go.

Because despite advancement in modern technology, people still cling to outdated solutions. Take gear change for example - it can be fully automated or at least made into simple up-down setting instead of convoluted old system. But no, it keeps getting added because some old farts insist that whatever they learned so far is the best.

>But it's so easy! Just watch engine speed and in precise moment change the gear. How? But it's so logical, just left down, then up, then right down, then up and changing from 3 to 5 is even easier just remember this convoluted movement and don't you dare trying to check which gear you are on right now, how can you not track it?

My family insisted so much that I would at least try to get license, they even paid for course but it was just wasted money. 30h and I still had zero control over the car itself and I would simply kill myself and everyone on board.

>change headlights
How old is your car?
I changed the headlights on my old one no problem, it was literally just opening a cap and replacing the bulb, but the new car (it's a used one from 2010 lol) has xenon lights and you can't even reach them anymore as a normal person.
Also, replacing windshield wipers should go in the essential bracket, like who the fuck would go to a garage to get their wipers changed? Do you also go to the garage to get your wiper fluid changed?

some cars are really fucking annoying. i had a 2003 sonata back in the day and it had a whole bunch of shit blocking access to the headlights. the whole battery had to be removed and this big vacuum hose.

Yes. Modern cars could be designed to be easier to use and that's a fact. I am incompetent at driving too, which is why I didn't even tried exam.

I'll let you in on a secret - cars, like video games graphics, technologically peaked in the aughts. Cars from 2000-2010 come with almost all the same amenities as new cars but are 100% cheaper and easier to maintain.

I got my '07 Honda Accord for $5000 outright at a used car lot and have had it for over five years now. My insurance (full coverage) is barely $50 a month.

Imagine yourself making sick car sounds. While revving through the gears when you think to yourself "that sounds fucking sweet *vroooooo-vrooooooooom* you shift up
If the car feels like it's comfortably making power then it can shift up

bro you'll either decelerate or accelerate if you get it wrong
decelerate = rpm was too low (sound was too quiet)
accelerate = rpm was too high (sound was too loud)

not that anon but i learned how to drive a manual car on the fly after i already bought it in the span of about a week. i have a feeling that life is just really hard for you lol. watching people of average competence perform things must feel to you how watching asian children perform master level music or art feels to everyone else.

seconding this. what's the catch or where do you live? minimum coverage on a $500 beater with a flawless driving record here in the US northeast will still run you ~$120-150 easily.

Yes, that's pretty much how I feel, about driving, talking to people, cooking, etc. I say - everything I was doing during and after my PhD, all these stuff in laboratory, using transmission microscope, setting up impedance measurements, analysing data - everything was much, much easier than those things average people do on fly.

And that means that if the people in the middle lane are going the speed limit, you can't pass them because you, too, are beholden to the speed limit. Thus, it doesn't matter which lane i'm in, because no one is allowed to go faster than me anyway.

At most steering with my knee on highway. Like, it's mostly straight line so at most you just need minor adjustments.

It takes a bit of practice but when you get used to it you won't even have to think anymore and everything goes on autopilot once you have the muscle memory locked in.
Also fuck the dude behind you. If he wants to speed let him overtake you.
