Average of that is 12.5k over 15 years thats 833.33 repeating miles a year. I'm going to assume something on the low end and assume your average speed was ~35 mph.

It would be time expensive, and you would also need to know for a fact that the manufacturer would continue to make that exact helmet 6+ years later.

You could personally do the study if you wanted. You would just need enough money to buy 3 helmets for every year after the expiration date you want to test, so 3 for 6 years, 6 if you intend to test at 7, 9 if you want to test at 8 years etc.

If you also want to account for "usage" as a variable, and not just keep 15 helmets in controlled storage, you're going to have to actively simulate helmet wear in triplicate.

some org could just buy peoples used helmets to do the study, or even ask for donations. Even if you only get like 100-200 helmets, it would probably be enough to confirm or deny the plausibility of the expiration claim.
Anonymous No.28568200 >>28568216

I should add, this would only apply to helmets made specifically like the one you tested. So if you tested carbon fiber helmets, the results may not apply to poly-carbonate helmets.
Anonymous No.28568213 >>28568217

I think that the reliance on individuals to reliably give their riding data would severely limit results. Like the guy who commutes every day and the boomer who says he "rides hard" will have different amounts of wear.
Anonymous No.28568216 >>28568222
>>28568200
you would also need shit to measure force and the jigs/machines used to consistently test impacts. It's not really something feasible for joe everyman, but would be for an org like snell or dot.
they won't because it wouldn't be in their best interest to have less helmets sold.
Anonymous No.28568217 >>28568222
>>28568213
so?
get enough test data and it wouldn't matter. the bicycle study someone linked to before said they got over 1500 helmet donations, and they tossed out over 800 of them to obvious wear/damage, but that still left over 600 to get good data from.

the eps in cycling helmets is also directly exposed to sunlight and experiences a lot more sweat than motorcycle helmets do (although it likely also gets wicked away faster). Showing no substantial difference in a 26 year old shitass bike helmet makes me fairly confident that a motorcycle helmet probably isn't actually just expiring out of the blue because it got some "hair juice" on it.
Anonymous No.28568222

I also wouldn't trust a study published by snell, and I do personally believe that helmets degrade over time.

because it would cut into the bottom line of so many companies they would hold it against whoever performs the study out of spite. think about it, a helmet is a form of armor. armor can rust and degrade if left in the ground or treated like shit like anything else but if taken care of and kept clean it can be reused for generations, you just need to mend the parts that wear out like the liner and visor but things are intentionally designed to not be repaired just replaced and look at that the new model that does the same shit happens to cost more and have nothing compatible with the old one who would have guessed

literally every bit of safety gear "expires" after ~5 years. Race car harnesses, racing seats, helmets, pads, baby car seats, EVERYTHING "expires", and race orgs won't let you run it because it's "expired". Does it actually suddenly stop working? No, but they want to avoid liability if you die while using their shit. They also want you to keep replacing your perfectly good gear because it's how they stay in business.

You can send oil off to get it tested and actually verify wear, and there have been many studies that support oil wear.
Curiously, the ONLY places saying motorcycles expire are people that have something to gain from it.

Going to see a $2200 Super Sherpa tomorrow as a first bike - backup is a $2800 DRZ with some good mods (lowered seat etc).

Super Sherpa has approx 17k miles - anything I should specifically look for? Very well kept.

The DRZ has 12k - recent top work, mechanic owned. Not worried.

First bike! Very excited either way - I feel like the DRZ might be the "better" buy but I'm a small guy.

I'm not the one shitting on everything like the epitome of fox and the sour grapes. I've had a 4x4 f150, a jeep, and a bronco and they all get you anywhere you want to go if you know what you're doing. I'm also not poor such that I have the luxury of getting what I want when I want so if I ended up not liking something I could get something else at my pleasure. I think the next thing I'll get just out of curiosity is a ineos grenadier.

My point is saying x or y sucks is lowbrow behavior. Everything is a compromise and trade off. Get something you enjoy or that gets you where you want to go. If you don’t like it then get something else.

Also, to stay on thread theme, for off-road on 2 wheels I have a 701 enduro (among other motorcycles).

Yeah, Yamaha are fags. They do gay things. They cancelled the R6 and marketed the R7 as an upgrade. If you watched the commercials, it's clear they were marketing it towards tik tok attention whores. Good in the short term for them, we'll see how it plays out long term.

No but in thinking if i get days off after this hitch thats gonna be my last oppprtunity to shoom because the crf450rl is kill rn and i probably wont have time to diagnose, order parts if necessary, fix my rearwheel shitshow and balance it, and then contemplate the purxhase of the Studded Shoomer Special Roadglide Knobbies™ for riding in -40c winter conditions

I'm not sure since Cycle Gear already put it into the helmet for me. It does say "Sound by JBL" on the box however, so I would assume so. I was going to get them for under $400 I think (before tax) because they were having a summer sale that shaved some of the price off. Still wound up going over though for a two year warranty, my thinking being that apart from my gaming headsets I have shit luck with high-priced audio equipment with well known names. I have better luck with the Skullcandy earbuds I get from the store, so If these shit the bed they'll replace them and do any further fiddling free of charge.

The audio seems a bit tinny which might be the nature of the beast, but I'm wondering if I need to fiddle with the sound settings just a bit. I'm not running it through the Cardo app, but maybe I should if it's anything like the iCue app for my headset.

The audio quality is unbelievably mid for the price you pay, but that's really about as good as you get with the 45mm jbl. It's fine if you're going around town but if you get on the highway it's just not loud enough to really satisfy.
