Im going to go down that hill again tomorrow and see if it happens again.Signs point to bad valve seals or turbo seals. Its only got 45k on it.

Did another test run. Slight puff of smoke as was pulling off from my house .Went back to the hill and it didnt do it again. Also checked the turbo at the inlet and the impeller is as tight as tight can be,no oil there. Also no oil on the downpipe side of the turbo. So that leaves it was residue still in the intake or vavle seals. Wouldnt valve seals smoke going down hill all of the time though?

Very true also, I just wanted to start with the options that didn't require me to jack up the entire car because I don't really have the proper tools or facilities for it
Though I should have actually checked for vacuum leaks first, it was the most likely culprit since everything that's not metal in the engine bay is so old and brittle.

He had the manuals doing a manual swap is probably a good move.

Again the terminal is not holding the splice together. The wires under the terminal are soldered together into one. Im using the terminal crimps for strand relief. Once I'm done the connection will get wrapped in electrical tap with just the tip exposed. Then the wire will be folded back along the trunk of the harness a taped in place again.

no? if your spade connectors are "vibrating" loose, especially if theyre bundled together like that, you need better spade connectors. no single connector in that bundle is coming loose. its actually better that its floating like that since car vibrations wouldnt affect something thats hanging. those fuses were in a cammed turbo volvo 240, if they were vibrating loose, theyd be loose already

I did that the first time I built a harness over 15 years ago. The problem I ran into is eventually without some kind of strand relief the solder joint will break and then you end up chasing connection issues. I'm trying to improve my harness building techniques and doing a splice similar to this is how a lot of the racing harnesses are built. The only difference is they use an open barrel uninsulated brass connector and I'm using a closed barrel insulated terminal because they are readily available at any store.

soldering isn't recommended unless the connection is inside a secure housing e.g. like how ECUs are enclosed in a housing that's bolted down, sometimes even with rubber vibration dampers.
the solder just makes the wires even stiffer and creates a stress riser where the solder ends.

Trouble is the outlet/inlet/vapor holes are in asinine positions which let upwards of half a gallon sit in the tank indefinitely. Guess I'll rinse with water after the vinegar, drain it, and dump in a couple gallons of iso alcohol and place in front of fan to dry it?

tore the entire dash apart to realize that the heatercore is the wrong size. bent it into shape somehow, fit it in, but only to find out the hoses are too big. drove 120 miles to get a heatercore, only to almost die on the way back in a car crash because two morons were trying to swim in traffic, just to find out it's the same one i already had. thought i could just take the hoses off and boil them until they fit because they're rubber, only to find out that, obviously, these hoses are literally designed to not shrink. hoses were seized on, but i finally got them off and just used the longer one to bypass the heatercore entirely.

Sometimes you dont have a choice. I gave them options.
been trying to help my blind dad with replacing a bunch of fuel system components in his vintage Ford but the brand new Holley 2300 he wanted to replace his vintage 2300 that was puking out gasoline is giving me trouble configuring it as i am just learning as i go.
- idle screws are currently set to 1 full turn out each, old carb liked 1 1/4th, for some reason the new carb had one side just 1/2 out and the other 1 full turn out of the box.
- already adjusted curb idle speed
- car runs and sounds fairly alright at idle in the garage and accelerates at idle just fine
- in gear and driving down the road it gags, stumbles, and even misfires
- vacuum ports were not messed with and are still capped off.
i don't have access to the car at the moment and they went to town but my first thoughts:
- check torque spec on the bolts for the carb to the intake just in case i have a vacuum leak, i merely got it snug but not tight so i feel i likely under torqued it
- check accelerator pump adjustment that was supposed to be set from factory
- check fuel bowl level that was supposed to be set from factory (i glanced earlier and i believe it is supposed to be 1/2 up the window but is 2/3rds up, just a little but not sure if this is enough to cause a flooding situation)
for reference it is a 500cfm 0-4412S Holley 2 barrel 2300 brand new out of the box and is attached to a 332 Ford V8 and is replacing a vintage Holley 2300 2 barrel 500 cfm.
fishing for ideas on what to check beyond what i figured out so i can go down a list when i have access to the car again.
>>28581754
if nothing else i got word from my folks the guy who is rebuilding their old carb is willing to come over and check my homework and hopefully get it working, i plan to come over as well if it isn't too late to learn a thing or two.

oh if anyone is curious what i did do besides not figuring out the carburetor:
1. replaced fuel pump
2. relocated fuel filter location and install fresh one (took a gasoline shower due to metal lines)
3. grease wheel bearings
4. installed an o'reilys sold carb that was a Chinese clone they sold for $325+ $45 for a core which was returned as it was sold as if it was a rebuild though i had it working about as good as the holley but returned if nothing else on principle when these are $82 on amazon normally, too late to save the core but got cashed out the core fee
5. saw throttle rod was stabbing into a ground wire for the engine block and shortened the excess so it wouldn't do that anymore.
there was a few odds and ends but this is at least the marginally interesting bits.

guy who is rebuilding their old carb said it is likely the vacuum advance we didn't hook up yet as we didn't have the right fitting and my dad insisted it would be fine for now as when he bought the car it wasn't hooked up at the time but was connected on the old Holley i took off, this was multiple timing adjustments and an engine rebuild ago so i guess it wasn't fine.
won't know for sure until we get a fitting for it but it explains why i was chasing my tail with it as every time i brought it up my dad repeated the story of how it wasn't connected when he bought the car.

my mother is the one who drives, just my dad and i been keeping things maintained on their cars for the last 20 years or so, my dad has been getting pretty slow and doesn't move like he used to after getting blood clots in his legs and a heart attack a few years back so i been doing most of the work these days, mostly with verbal encouragement more than actual advice on what to do, though i only know what i know from working on things so anything i haven't previously done helping him it is a learn as i go approach.
they own a 1959 Ford Fairlane Galaxie 500 (this is what i am helping with)
a 1989 Mustang Convertible with 5.0 engine (i've helped with a few things on this, the quarter window repair it needs seems beyond my skill level)
and they used to own a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette (repaired door lock, rebuilt headlight motor, general maintenance and used to drive this one myself for a while when they had it)
he did drive a fancy t-bucket somebody owned in a parking lot with the owners direction before, he is fully pitch black blind btw.
here is a picture of the Galaxie i've been working on

Lame, I did this with subaru heads. You need a solid piece of plate glass, 3m 77 and a bunch of sandpaper. I have seen videos of guys using a concrete pad to level out a head.
Use a fat sharpie to mark up the surface and see where your high spots are. Use a figure 8 pattern to keep the cutting consistent across the face of the head. Check with a good straight edge and feelers. Got mine down to less than .001

yeah and their pajeet-tier "repair" lasts like 5000 miles before they have to do it again. there are some things you can get away with half-assing but flattening metal isn't one of them
>plate glass
you need float glass, not plate, and it should be at least an inch thick. that's the only way you're gonna approach any standard of "flatness" without a surface plate or a mill.

Anyone with plastic repairs experience?
I want to fix several places in my car, both exterior and interior, and I'm thinking about welding it. What kit should I get?
1 is soldering iron insert set (previously I repaired some plastics with normal soldering iron with mixed results).
2 is heating gun attachments set. I don't have a heating gun, so maybe it's the time to buy one.
3 is for the exterior panels but I suppose it's possible to weld smaller stuff using the attachment from the 1 (a couple of them on the right).
I have a factory repair manual for my car, it's pretty decent and covers plastic repairs too with general advice, plastic types/temperature reference and so on. OEM tool looks like a heat gun with precise temperature control and with attachments from 2.

labor would be the biggest cost. You could get an inline repair splice but you'd still need to flare the line for that, at which point you might as well just replace the existing line. Those plastic clips that hold the line down are also a pain in the ass to get the line out of, at least it was on my car and that was in the engine bay.

car fired right up and test drove great, so that was the missing puzzle piece, at least it bought us time to figure out other issues with the car so i think it is pretty much ready to go outside of minor tweaking but nothing important.

reposting cuz other thread is dead, I have a 2015 focus ST, I went back to uni and I really have barely any money rn, not nearly enough to pay for maintenance and insurance on this car unless I ask my dad for money which sucks ass.
I took it to a mechanic because of wheel noise and realized there's a fucking nail in one of the tires and they are bald anyway so I need something, probably have to cope with chinese all seasons cuz I can't afford good tires. the noise is likely from wheel bearings, I trust what they say since most forums agree with this, though they also said it could be a transmission noise.
I guess I got 3 questions, should I replace wheel bearings for ~700-800 (CAD) parts+labour (ain't doing that myself), are chinese tires good enough these days, and should I sell this money pit for 12-15k and either buy a motorcycle or a honda civic until I have a full time job again.

I got 3 on. The top nut on all 3 struts wouldn't come off. Ended up using like 2 feet a impact extensions on the impact for extra weight and had to hair trigger it on/off on/off. Last strut has 1 bolt I cant reach. Its blocked by the evap canister and one of its bolts is rotted away so nothing fits it. Im going to cut the nut tomorrow morning and finish up.Its one of those quick jobs that took 6 hours.

I'm moving out on my own soon and I'm slowly amassing a decently sized tool kit for myself so I stop mooching off my stepdad. (Once I move I'm getting an actual deep toolbox for my garage.) Next up is grabbing an impact and socket sets. What size impact should I get? Should I go for a 3/8 or 1/2 inch for general wrenching if I'm not yet going to do anything that needs crazy amounts of torque

Just picked up '81 280zx that was rebuilt by (supposedly) a Nissan ASE tech of many, many years. Driving home, I realized I was heating up a ton, pulled over, and found the fan power wire was unhooked from the relay. Plugged it in, chugged along, and all was fine until today. Leaving work, I started experiencing extremely high temps again, found a place to pull over, and found the crimped connector on the fan wire completely burned through, fused to the relay. With limited tools, I decided to directly wire the fan into the switch wire just to get the fan to run until I got to the parts store. I've since gotten the fan wiring exactly back to how it was- yet the fan still won't come on. I personally believe that I've done something to the switch wire/fuse, as the air/fuel display in the cabin no longer comes on. Where would I start with diagnosing this? I'm far from an auto electrician and beyond editing harnesses I have no clue what I am doing. Which fuse is typically hooked to the switch wire? The parts of it that I can see don't look burned or damaged.

i was gonna say, i never enjoyed seeing how people handle impacts nowadays, it kinda feeds into that instant gratification mindset, which has a way of circumventing discipline. unless they're working on cars all day, and want to make their life a little easier, wrenches are a good workout. people also make a big fuss about oem parts, but what about manufacturer torque specs? why not get your car in the shape it left the factory in, rather than running the risk of damage? i'm still learning though, so i'll allow people to do whatever they want and see if i can learn anything valuable from it that i can apply to my own practice. i understand sometimes there are methods to the madness.

sometimes only a fuckhueg impact (torque-wise) will get the job done. i had a pair of control arms that i needed to remove the ball joints from, and not even jerking a 12 ft cheater bar could get them off. guy at work had a 1000 ft-lb cordless impact and it zipped the fuckers off like it was nothing.
but a cheater bar is great for shit like crank pulley bolts where there might not be enough room to stick an impact gun on. just remember to keep yanking on the bar as applying constant force is how you snap fasteners

Thanks. That's a bit unfortunate, because I'm trying to stick to compact 12V brushless tools for now and it seems that the impacts don't go much higher than 100 lbft. To get something ten times more torquey I have to buy into 18V+ systems.
Are there any decent corded electric impacts for reasonable money (and for 220V/50Hz since I'm obviously a Eurofag)?

milwaukee somewhat recently released a high torque 12v - 746 n m of torque which is actually pretty damn powerful for a 12v and makes it comparable to the 18v mid torques. BUT there's always a catch, and in this case it's that you only get that with their high output batteries which are either 5 amp or 6 amp, i forget which. but you only get that power with those particular batteries, and they're not cheap.

Yeah, you can't trick physics. Those should stick out of the handle too and might provide some additional oomph to 12V tools that came with smaller batteries originally.

If you don't have a factory gauge or info display, buy a multimeter, find battery posts/jump starting posts and check voltage between them without disconnecting the battery. Should be more than 13 volts at idle (check factory docs for more precise value) and about 12.5 with ignition and everything else turned off.

Two more things: battery posts are made of lead so don't eat it and wash your hands/use gloves, because lead is toxic even in tiny amounts and really hard to get out of your organism. And 12.0 volts and below mean the battery is close to dead and your car most likely won't start or won't run for long if the alternator is dead.

Always thought ratchets are for the actual low torque screwing/unscrewing and the mechanism itself could be easily damaged by applying higher torques. In other words if you can't work the bolt at all without applying too much force with your hand, you put aside the ratchet and switch to a T-handle or a breaker bar that lacks the ratchet mechanism but is more sturdy. If even that doesn't work with the same reasonable force, you employ penetrating oils, propane torches, hitting it with a hammer and so on, and only after that goes swearing and applying everything you have to the breaker bar. That's my usual routine with hand tools. I assume a high-torque impact should be used right before swearing or maybe before the torch.

Finished replacing my counterfeit catalytic convertor with a working one over the weekend. EGR tube hex nuts were rounded off by the prior mechanic so I had to split both of them. And because I couldn't get the tube off the back of the CAT I had to remove all of the heat shields near the engine back in order to squeeze the assembly out of the car sideways.
Ended up clearing the EGR valve while I was in there since that's a lot easier to do with the other parts already removed. And had to replace the rear exhaust seal and some exhaust hangers to finish everything up.
No longer have any recurring check engine light codes and my idle is a lot more stable.
My tool box is really overdue for being properly organized. I will tackle that over labor day weekend. I also should get around to replacing my left rear wheel bearing and drum brake parts. Already did the right side and the drum had quite a track ground into it.

I should also rephrase it a bit. If the electrical load is big enough, the voltage will drop, that's the reason alternators are rated for say 14.5 Volts and 100 Amps at 1500-6000 RPM. Power is just volts times amps. Alternator converts power. If there are not enough RPMs supplying rotational power to the alternator but the equipment is trying to draw really a lot, the voltage will be lower than 14.5. If the voltage it can supply is lower than the battery voltage, it means the battery is going to discharge. All that is also the reason cop cars used to have higher idle revs, they historically had lots of stuff drawing significant power like lights and radios compared to regular cars so the alternators had to keep up with these loads.
>At idle I thought alot of cars (real cars, before 2003) only received 12v until the revs climbed.
Regular cars with "dumb" voltage regulators still have them set to voltage high enough to charge the battery. If the alternator is really shitty and underpowered but there's a lot of load like incandescent lights, electric heaters, it might struggle (lights glow dim, but become brighter when you press on the gas), so that's where that might come from. But that's normal only for really shitty cars.

I'm that anon. Why use one to install bolts in a car? Good ones are easy to wrench on, bad ones you don't want to install, and if there is some big ass torque involved, you usually want it to be specific so you use a torque wrench anyway to tighten it.

You can use basically any rotating power tool with a proper adapter to screw things fast without tightening them. Everyone has a cordless drill/driver, it's probably the most multipurpose and widely used household tool. I use that. I sometimes use electric screwdrivers too, especially for tighter spaces and smaller fasteners. But these things don't have a lot of torque and lack impact action.

You are saving minutes of time on a single bolt multiply that by 10-15 for an average job. torque spec isnt really that important. German spec guden-tyte is enough for most things. The engine is where it is most critical to get the specs correct.

Look, I just want them to come off next time, or to not damage any flimsy 20-30 year old thread or cover, or just crush the washer correctly to avoid a hydraulic leak. Doing everything to spec every time helps with that tremendously.

I flushed the coolant in a BMW 325i (e46) but I've found a small leak on the radiator, it's dripping from somewhere above the drain screw, probably the circled area.
The engine isn't overheating, I can even get LPG to turn on. The leak is really slow even under pressure but it's constant and keeps happening when the system is cold so it could turn into a mess.
Can I use something like rtv silicone to cake it on the connection or is this something dumb like a misaligned oring that might have moved?
I'm broke so I can't just buy a new radiator and I'd really like to avoid draining this coolant again.
This car is a manual if that means anything

Today I leveled the car with some wood compensating for the crown on the road infront of my house. Just to be extra sure of my measurements . There is zero info on how to adjust the rear on my car but after laying under there for awhile I figured it out. It has 2 swing arms/ lower control arms. one to the front and rear of the hub. the front arms bolt is some sort of black magic where it turns the arm in or out when only loosening it. the rear is just a normal cammed bolt. got the toed out rear right to 0 degrees. stuck on the left side . I need shorty E-socket I only have deeps and there isnt enough room between the bolt and gastank. fuck dem "master" techs .

but i'm just not sure what would be a good way to have the feed wire branch off into the blade fuse terminals. Is there a way of making your own busbar?

So I'm installing a manual radiator fan switch in my 2007 Swift rally/track car. It has 3 fan relays, but they are just labeled No. 1/2/3, not control/low/high like a Neon I saw on some Youtube video. Now, I found the the 1 is the control one, as it always needs to be shorted in order for the fan to spin. Then shorting 2 or 3 in addition makes the fan go faster.
Now, the thing is, shorting both 1 and 2, and 1 and 3 makes the fan go at the same speed. And shorting all three relays doesn't make it go even faster. Then my question is, does shorting all three relays has some another functionality? I looked in the service manual but there's no info on that.
