Tbh I'm surprised to hear that Europe even has bears. I'm really surprised to hear that Europe even has nature, even if it's a minimal amount. The euro anons that post here make it sound like an overly urbanized nightmare where /out/ culture isn't even a thing.

>The euro anons that post here make it sound like an overly urbanized nightmare where /out/ culture isn't even a thing
I've said this before in other threads, but most of those guys aren't who they claim to be. My favorite so far was a "danish" guy claiming he couldn't legally buy strike-anywhere matches due to EU legislation. A bunch of guys sent him links to where he could get them, some replied in danish, and he'd just keep repeating the same "EU bad, everything forbidden bcs jews" shtick.

Anyways, Europe isn't that urbanized. The american coasts are much worse. Central US has less urban areas, but much less nature. Here in Germany, or anywhere in Europe except the former commie states, the fact that plots of lands have been subdivided for millenia has resulted in plots of land mostly around 1000m2, many of which have been neglected for so long that by now, they're basically primal wilderness again.
Where I live (Germany near the french border), if you're careless, you might walk up on wolves and lynxes within sight of the nearest village. No bears here, but further south, they're around. Though the government keeps denying it (just like they deny the wolves around here) so they don't get pressured into making protection zones for them.

>Anyways, Europe isn't that urbanized. The american coasts are much worse. Central US has less urban areas, but much less nature.
This is absolutely untrue. Have you been to the US. I live in a small city. If I drive half an hour (15 on pavement + 15 on gravel), I'll be in a sprawling wildlife area. I'm talking about thousands of acres. Any coastal area in the US has far more nature than any country that isn't Russia or in Scandinavia.
>Here in Germany, or anywhere in Europe except the former commie states
Germany is a former commie state.
>many of which have been neglected for so long that by now, they're basically primal wilderness again.
Not true.
Europe has no freedom and no nature. Maybe you can buy strike anywhere matches, but that doesn't mean much compared to what you can't do and what I can.

This is why when you see a bear you shoot it. Young, old, large, small, close or far - you fucking shoot it. I've shot 4 bears out of season and have never had a problem. If you gut shoot them they'll run a mile away from where you were before dying and if anyone investigates - which they won't - you're scot free. Fuck bears, fuck bear shit, fuck having to bearproof every fucking thing, fuck bears that kill elk and deer and gamefish, fuck bears that tear up cabins. Fuck em.

The western parts can be quite dense but it's not very even unless you're in the Netherlands or Belgium. France and Spain have some of the lowest population density areas in the EU.
Thatone incident was in Romania though and the further east you go, the larger the (relatively) untouched areas are.
Romania is a pretty unique case though because it has very large forested and mountainous areas that can be reached fairly easily thanks to Ceaucescu's "highways to nowhere" . It's a common destination for european bikers who want to go ride the scenic "wilderness" without having to go off-road.
>/out/ culture isn't even a thing.
You can't really do weeks-long treks in complete wilderness unless you're in the arctic areas and if you want to hunt then you need to be familiar with your locallaws but that's quite a stretch saying there is no /out/ culture in Europe. The fishing, bikebacking/touring, hunting and hiking scenes are pretty neat over here.

>I live in a small city.
So do I.
>If I drive half an hour (15 on pavement + 15 on gravel), I'll be in a sprawling wildlife area.
If I walk 200m westwards, I'm in the woods.
>I'm talking about thousands of acres
Well, I'm not gonna convert to retarded units, but we're talking ~1200km2 of just forests. And that's just the continous area. Around a third of Germany is forested, and it's easily possible to hike from the alps to the baltic sea while camping in the woods every night.

However, that's not "nature", it's forests. Same as most american "nature". sure, if you've never seen untouched wilderness, like parts of russia, scandinavia and eastern asia still have, everywhere with trees seems nice. But the difference is stark. American forests are basically wood plantations by now, while in germany and the scandis, due to inheritance divisions, there are thosands of small plots, too small to efficiently use for anything, that haven't been touched for a century or two.

>Germany is a former commie state.

Yep, I know. Actually farming my own food, living within 200m of Germany's largest forest, getting my hunting license this year and having lived of the land for weeks at a time before makes it pretty funny when cityfags claim I'm /in/, to be honest.

Is romania really that bad, or are you another burger troll? Because in most of Europe, getting guns is as easy as going to the gun store, picking one, and paying.
Only downside is that you're pretty limited in what guns you can get without a license, with most countries restricting everything that isn't a blackpowder singleshot. But then again, if you do get a license (which is trivially easy btw), you can get things americans (with the exception of licensed gunstore owners afaik) can only dream of.

I live around there (foot of Bucegi) and they have become a problem, but our incapable government does nothing about it. Last estimate from the ministry in 2023 is that there are between 10.5 and 13k bears in the country, but wouldn't be surprised at all if there's more. At the end of the day they're protected, and Romania is big and has many remote places. They walk around my village willy nilly anyway, especially if it's foggy. In the last years there's more or less a monthly report of a bear attack and someone either was killed or maimed. On the one hand I say fuck these creatures, there's too many and I just want to hike into the forest from my house and look for fossils and cool plants, but on the other hand tourists being killed I support 100%.

If you're in Europe either:
>no dogs - not innawoods

>everpresent chance that you'll get near dogs - congrats, you're innawoods

if I will give some hard learned advice:
> drop the ego. ask local guides detailed questions about routes. don't trek a trail that doesn't offer easy alternative headings (don't get yourself bottlenecked-see next)
>out and backs are your friend. Of course, any loop is also out and back, but if you're at the edge of your capabilities, 9 miles in to a 10 miler full day trek, 500M elevation, no water, and suddenly a idiot shepherd left his dogs roaming loose you have no option but turn back. Don't get bottlenecked or you're going BACKWARDS 9 miles to the car and town and not 1 mile.
>dont rely on gps maps, phones fail, make drawn maps, learn them and use them as well as you can. laminated helps also. triangulate, use a compass, learn how to detect north at any given moment for example
>always bring a trekking pole, ideally one you could use as a shield/spear if you had to
>nobody cares if you carry a weapon if you don't EVER flash it about
>sometimes you can appease inquisitve dogs with crackers. not angry ones, but edgy ones, throw that floofer a cracker and he will be less edgy. this normally happens for dogs roaming small towns and not necessarily farm dogs (which are always imbeciles)
>dont carry heavy shit you dont need to. keep keys on your person in case you gotta ditch your pack (bad scenario but might happen)
>get some chem lights, a little mirror, a small 'light; strong torch to give SOS symbols (worst case scenario
>you can spot dogs further away if you carry a small pair of binos, it doesnt really bother them or threaten them too much but dont like raise and stare hardly at them for a long time, same as you dont raise a stick to them as if it is a weapon cos dogs are smart(well, trained anyways)
>food and water and make sure some of your food can also hydrate you .

>don't do too much alone,, make friends, or at least go where there are many other hikers. the woods are not supposed to be your alone fantasy or larp, they can be, but good luck doing that when you fuck your ankles or piss off animals. just drop ego and be responsible. make friends, say hello (couples are harder to make friends on, but normally you can smile with the lady and greet the man,m and if he is not an asshole you can talk, its ok. it is good if you have family/wife and appear as a solo trekking man and not young odd person)
>I have a ratio and theory because I live quite innawoods: zero people around is 20, a few is 50, busy is 100. I calculate around a number, and I let that tell me how much of my capabilities I wanna use that day. it normally means how confident I feel to challenge myself bases on how many other people can be near me. in practise it means I push my abilitys on weekends when lots of tourists come - is ok, because more people see you say hello and it feels better.

I will agree that most of this becomes irrelevant if you have a firearm that you can use safely. even if it meant trouble I would shoot my way to safety if I had to. I think if something attacks, or you 'know' it is attacking, you just shoot and survive. Nigger, do you know what it is like to live in fear that a fucking bear is going to maul you while you go out to pee at night on your own property (yes we have outdoor toilets because we are a shithole)? No?

Well this is a reality in my country. Rural people live in fear because bears come to their farms and plunder their crops and steal their animals. Heck, even in big cities like Brasov you have these bears that eat trash and terrorize the locals. I am not saying that we need to cut down our forests, just that we need to kill more bears, not all of them, just enough os that the population is not forced to go to cities and villages for food. There are too many bears for the amount of wilderness they have and yes we should have more forests and more protected land for them, however that takes time and we do not have that. The only utilitarian solution would be to bait and trap them, if the government is not willing to do anything about it.

Don't tell me that you are one of those hippies that would gladly eat game but don't you dare touch muh fuzzy lil bears, they didn do nuffin'! They good boys!

Depends on the location. In my area, that is wilder and less human dense, they are hiding. To be fair i never seen one. I found lots of tracks, even fresh. Parked the car, went to climb a hill, returned one hour later and fresh paws near car. They avoid contact with us because they are used to know we kill them and have fear. Most people don't care of laws and they shoot them anyway.
Just send someone from SRI then and now to kill some near the road and they will learn not to make contact with humans.
