I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but here's a list of things I've done over the past few years that might give you some ideas to start. Keeping in mind, I originally wanted to be a woodland hermit, now I want to start a homestead.

My advice is to cut our and outright remove anything you don't want to be distracted by, sell your irrelevant books, sell your gaming console, get a dumbphone, and eliminate as much distractions so that you can focus on gathering the skills for what you really want to do.
It's possible, but it's hard, and it will take a lot of time. But if you are really committed I reckon you can expedite the process by just committing every day

You can get from place to place by walking or hitching rides on trains.

Or much more difficultly, you can go into the national forests and stealth camp here and there. Food is much harder to find if not impossible. Water is probably easier than being homeless since you don't have to worry about viral contamination as much. And there are animals that will try to eat you so bring a pistol.

Would be easy out west but would also have to contend with much more dangerous fauna.

OP here. I'm in Georgia. I currently pay $800/month rent to live in a house with a few other people in a wooded area, near a park you can walk down, but as far as livable fruits to extract, I don't think there's much over here.

Is it easy to find train stations on Google maps and hop aboard?

Does the carefulness lie in staying hidden until you arrive at your destination or does it involve selecting a good train in the first place?

Basic safety: Keep three points of contact at all times (Hands, feet, bottom, etc), keep out of sight, don't ever ride a suicide car, always pick a car that is safe and ideally has some degree of protection (Grainers, shipping container, or specialty cars with open sides), also never ride in a boxcar, if that shit locks you will die before anyone finds you.

Typically you can use google maps on your phone to locate where the train tracks are the most congested, this is typically where the yard is, and where the most trains will stop.

Typically once you're moving you can move around a little and enjoy the scenerie, but you want to be hidden basically whenever somebody might have eyes on you, as they can call the company and notify them to catch you the second the train stops. You want to try to get the right train for where you're going, but it isn't always feasible. Make an educated guess based on what the train looks like, what kind of cargo it has, etc.

I got slapped with a B misdemeanor in North Dakota once, the yard bulls are fucking ass holes and will try to give you felonies but the cops really don't want to have to deal with that shit so they will typically give you something minor and let you fuck off, unless you were caught on it while it was moving, whole different story.

Bring earplugs to protect your ears, a bandana and plenty of food and water (Wet the bandana when going through tunnels to use as a makeshift mask to protect from the smoke that builds up). Avoid the Yard personel, and I would go so far as to say being fit and travelling somewhat light in case you need to run.

I don't know if there still are but there was some PDF's you could download back in the day that contained general yard info and where to find a ride, it helped me out in a pinch. Also ask locals, sometimes the local hobos have some train knowledge if they aren't completely insane.
I got pinned on the way up to oregon once with no food and only a little water because the train broke down in the mountains, great day and great view, but also really risky, that's why I recommend supplying yourself just in case.
My only other advice is to just be cautious around the gutter punks. Some of them can be really cool people while others are just generally shitty, and all around they can be very pessimistic and draining people to be around.
Crossing borders you also have to worry about new technology finding you, such as that X-ray machine between Canada and the U.S.
A lot of info, maybe I'm overcomplicating it, the main thing is to be wise, don't hop trains while under the influence of anything (Don't do drugs in the first place).
The trains have the potential to take you to some very beautiful places most people don't see, but if you're not careful it will be more danger then it is worth.

Highways along forests are good places to scavenge. When I was homeless I'd drag roadkill into the woods, butcher with an old hatchet and knife. A well built fire can dry out what you can't eat. Jerky is rather easy to make, and pemmican too if you don't mind staying in place for a few days. Where I live in America you can camp in the wilderness for around 10 days before needing to vacate that site. I'd bury provisions underneath large rocks or unique trees, and come back months later. I had a lot of failures but I survived three winters like this.

Get physical copies of books with info on local edible species, and maps as well. Do some basic research on wilderness laws. Learn some basic survival skills like making shelter. I had a small tent starting out but lost it after 18 months. Soap can be made from rendered animal fat and ashes, and ashes themselves can be used with water to removed oils and grease from the body if you're desperate to get clean.

But since you apparently didn't realize those questions were relevant, I assume you're starting from zero. In that case, start with

Soon I'll also get my hunting license, and start renting rooms to tourists. All of those need specific knowledge, that'd be useless if I was trapping in the yukon territory, for example. Yet both allow you to live without wageslaving, or ahving to conform to society beyond selling produce and showing guests where the guest house and the parking spots are.

Some states and cities have even tougher requirements, you should only use them early on until you get your footing and figure out how easily it is to feed yourself from everything that everyone tosses out. If you're homeless in that state, you're now a homeless resident in that state.
