Drone Hits Major Sports Arena in Russia's Belgorod, Prompting Evacuation

A Ukrainian drone struck the roof of the "Belgorod Arena," a major sports and entertainment complex in the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday, causing a fire but no casualties, according to the regional governor.

Lavrov: North Korea Initiated Offer to Send Troops to Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Saturday that North Korea offered to send its troops to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, an initiative he attributed directly to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Why it matters: Russia has been Iran's main diplomatic backer on the nuclear issue for years. But while Moscow publicly advocates for Iran's right to enrich, Putin has taken a tougher position in private in the wake of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran.
Behind the scenes: Moscow has encouraged the Iranians to agree to "zero enrichment," according to three European officials and one Israeli official with knowledge of the issue.

Two sources said the Russians also briefed the Israeli government about Putin's position regarding Iran's uranium enrichment. "We know that this is what Putin told the Iranians," a senior Israeli official said.
Putin also expressed that position in calls last week with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

State of play: Israeli and U.S. strikes seriously damaged Iran's nuclear facilities but did not destroy all of Iran's highly enriched uranium. It's unclear whether any of Iran's centrifuges survived.

Trump has made clear he wants a new nuclear deal with Iran. If negotiations take place in the coming weeks, zero uranium enrichment on Iranian soil will be one of the key U.S. demands, sources say.

Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits FSB Building in Occupied Starobilsk

A Ukrainian drone attack on July 8 damaged a building used by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) in the occupied city of Starobilsk in Ukraine's Luhansk region, according to multiple Ukrainian and Russian sources. A local woman was reported injured in the strike.

Ex-Wagner Fighter With Criminal Past Seeks Asylum in Finland

A former Russian mercenary with a history in the Wagner Group and an extensive criminal record has been detained in Finland after illegally crossing the border and is now seeking asylum, Finnish authorities and media have reported.
The Finnish Border Guard confirmed it detained a man on June 17 near the town of Kitee after he crossed from Russia through a forested area.He was placed in a temporary detention center after requesting international protection.
While authorities have not officially named the man, multiple reports identify him as Zhaslan Mustakhanov, a Russian citizen from Omsk born in 1992. He is also known by the alias "Yevgeny Shpartun."
Mustakhanov has a documented history as a contract soldier, having served with both the Wagner Group and the regular Russian army. He gave interviews to pro-Kremlin media outlets about fighting in major battles in Ukraine, including Bakhmut and, more recently, Selydove in late 2024.
In early 2025, however, Mustakhanov's public stance shifted dramatically. In February, he released a video sharply criticizing Russia's military leadership. He followed this on June 30 with another video, posted to the social network VKontakte, accusing commanders of "betrayal" and of leaving soldiers "to rot in the fields." According to Finnish broadcaster Yle, which first broke the story, he was already in Finland when the second video was published.
Russian investigative outlet "Mediazona" reported that Mustakhanov had at least six prior convictions for theft and robbery before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He was reportedly sentenced again in 2023 for robbing a jewelry store, and it is unclear how he was subsequently released to fight in Ukraine.
