been to a psych ward twice in my life, they separate the girls and guys, but you can talk to them in the lunch room, i was dehydrated the whole time. food was awful, my room mate was an old black guy who would growl like a demon in his sleep.


the nurses do not like the people there, they are cold and callous, the only time a nurse was nice to me is when i was holding a bible and she said she was a Christian too and gave me some prayers

as someone who stayed i a hobo shelter for a year, the answer is yes. and involuntary hospitalization based on medical necessity, not danger to self or others. almost every hobo you see on the street is there because of untreated mental illness. the drugs and alcohol are just self medication. we treat stray dogs better then we do these obviously sick people. none of them wanted their lives to end up that way.

Sure, but it won't help if we don't amend the laws. Leftists screech about defunding and Reagan, but our psych hospitals closed because our courts basically ruled that we have a constitutional right to liberty and the government can't deprive anyone of that liberty via involuntary institutionalization without a compelling state interest.

The bar for that compelling state interest was set prohibitively high, basically no involuntary institutionalization unless people are a threat to themselves or others. And they didn't include things like suffering from breaks with reality, being psychotic, refusing to take one's meds, or being completely unable to care for one's self as a threat to oneself.

In most other countries, all of those things can see someone involuntarily institutionalized. If we could do that here, the market would adjust accordingly and more psych hospitals would open. Until the laws are changed, opening more hospitals won't accomplish shit if the government can't force anyone into them.

I worked on a psych ward briefly (doctor). It was pretty fun.

There was only one good-looking mentally ill woman though. Middle-class, blonde, typical party girl, had a functional social life, but was extremely suicidal.

Everyone else was what you'd expect. Relapsed schizos who were funny, depressed/anxious/suicidal poorfat people, drug abusers and alcoholics.

Lots of these people were also in/out frequently as the provisions in the wards did not make up for all the deficits they had in their lives at home or on the streets. Our ward was only an admissions ward, so we either tossed them back to whence they came, or put them in a specialist unit where they could stay for longer - sometimes months at a time

We gave our patients enrichment and shit in our wards. TV, games, pool, a punching bag, etc. If they were compos mentis, they could get leave and so long as they were back by certain times, they'd get full treatment. Staff would go out with them to smoke, etc.
