They are "fairly" common, the problem is that they are either too dispersed and would need to scrub tons of dirt for a few grams if not extracted from the very few deposits that have them in great quantities.

They simply are better. The Russians did what was deemed impossible in the west with oxidizer rich staged combustion on the NK-33, and the progeny of that engine (mainly RD-170, 180 and 191) are all still very good, but Raptor is the next design step.
It provides significantly better thrust to weight, ISP (not just due to different fuel, full flow staged combustion leads to an inherent ISP increase) and throttle response and range. It does that with a smaller footprint too.
There's no shame in getting surpassed after more than half a century. The Soviets probably could've gotten full flow staged combustion working, but no one was interested in methane in the 60s. They did it with abhorrent hypergolic propellant with the RD-270.
