Marx thought rich countries would be the first to communism because of their resources. He was wrong. Lenin thought peasants could be guided to communism after revolution, the state bureaucrats just took control instead. Mao thought peasants are the key if they just keep revolting continuously, that did scare the bureaucrats for a while but ultimately got put down. Some Anarchists have made small communist communities but scaling up hasn't been possible.

Personally I think striving for higher ideals is valuable even if it fails, because capitalism is an obvious dead end as you can see by how fucked things are now under 100% capitalist hegemony.
