I have a 20 year old car and its on its last leg. Eventually when it dies I will be nearly forced into buying a more modern car. Are there any modern models which do not have touch screen faggotry? Afaik government mandated back up cameras after 2014ish and after that they started replacing dash dials with screen more and more.

>What are the political implications of living as if technology never surpassed that found in 2006?

I had a flip phone until last year. I had to upgrade because my old phone wouldn't work on the new network. I hate my smartphone for pretty much everything except text messaging. Its like a gay, stupid proprietary micro laptop with a dinky touchscreen in place of a mouse and keyboard. That said having a camera is nice and having lived with a flip phone up to 2024 I can tell you that it was becoming increasingly difficult as more and more people expected you to have a smartphone as they directed you to use some queer unnecessary ap to do all sorts of things that shouldn't require one.

The world is made for brain dead phone obsessed women. If you don't have one of the damned things you're going to struggle. Personally I just have the smartphone and don't use it very much. It seems to be the best option, I have the thing if I need it; but I haven't let it dominate my life.

>Are there any modern models which do not have touch screen faggotry?

No. Some of them have less touchscreen bullshit.

The Chevy Express van is decidedly retro and its really reliable and comes with an LS V8. Its basically a 1990s design. It still has a touchscreen; but it also has manual controls for most things and a traditional dash with mechanical speedo and tach.

The Mazda Miata is pretty old school too. Lots of fun to drive, very simple. It has a touchscreen; but also real dials and buttons for climate control.

1st or 2nd gen VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI. 2nd gen in pic related, can also get it in an extended wheelbase model (allspace or whatever). 1st gen has a torque converter auto, and in America the 2nd gen got an aisin torque converted (8 speed I think), which basically last forever. My first gen has full leather and heated seats, done 350,000km, and has never gone wrong, drives the same since new, uses even less fuel now, and the leather has no wear. Major service at 120,000km, an even more major service around 250-280,000km, and that's it.

Now German cars are complete shit.

Late 90s, early 2000s or 2010s are ok.

I've been thinking about doing it, data hoarding, I really fear the possibility of them changing words from books, movies, lost media, etc. Look at all current historical European dramas. They are full of niggers because they want people to believe they have always been here.

But Ive heard that hard drives have like a 15-20 year life. Is that true? I'm not a computer tech connaisseur.

It's kind of a moot question. I've only got a few hard drives older than 20 years and I don't even have the adapters to hook them up. But as far as I know, they're still working. If you get into data hoarding, you will need to transfer your data to newer drives, if only because of the eventual need for larger capacity, and arguably redundancy as well. I can tell you for a fact that optical media rot all the fucking time, including the brands that claim they won't.

I used to feel the same way about PCs without 3.5" drives but shit in technology evolves. Additionally, no component has failed on me with more frequency than fucking CD/DVD/Bluray drives. They are by far the most unreliable fuckers imaginable. I've got a 5.25" drive that's 35 years old and it STILL fucking works, while the only CD drive I've got that still functions is a pioneer external USB that I bought less than ten years ago. Every single internal CD drive I have ever owned, burner or otherwise, eventually just gave up the ghost.

>Any oldfags around here to comment on what custom built PCs were like back in the 2000s? I wanna see if anything's changed, and if so, how much.
And the answer to this is not really. I used to build them for people circa 2000. It's still a matter of a case, PSU, mobo, CPU/cooler, graphics card, and a hard drive. Sound cards and NICs used to be standard fare until most motherboards started integrating them, though sometimes it is better to buy a good one than use the onboard. Cooling is far more important and potentially expensive than it used to be, especially with newer-gen CPUs that apparently put out a retarded amount of heat even at stock speeds. Water cooling is still pretty much only worth it if you really have a passion for modding the fuck out of your rig. AIOs are great for cooling but are more unreliable long-term and expensive than a good air cooler. Also video cards cost a fucking arm and a leg thanks to AI driving up the prices. I'm still running on a 2600K OC'd with a GTX 1070ti and I play modern games without much issue at 1080p.

IMO, CPU tech has not justified upgrades nearly as much since about 2013 as they did before. GPU upgrades are worthwhile but expensive as fuck. I'll probably build a new rig in the near future because I would like to move past a 24" monitor but I'm not enthusiastic about the cost. And all the best sites for actual data on what parts are good are pretty much fucked and there's more FUD out there than there ever used to be. You have to do a lot more research from multiple sources these days if you want to be informed. Still a great hobby and I love it. It's always worth building versus paying for a custom-built rig.

This is the unfortunate issue with dumbphones; none of the actual dumbphones have all the 4g bands, and 3g was phased out. They also don't have any with open source operating systems, whereas you can install an open source Android custom rom on many Android phones, so they're actually less private than smartphones. Just get a cheap Android, install a custom rom on it, and uninstall the browser with adb if you would like.

if not available to purchase your best bet is to take apart the TV and remove the WiFi/BT card.. run hard wire ethernet to it and power it off entirely when not in use (plug removed from wall)

Is it even possible? Almost any old tech has done well to last the test of time. But 20 years, back when tech was generally not monitored and tracked, is still quite a long time.

I still use blu ray and dvd as my main watching platform. I stocked up when nobody wanted them, those same movies that appear on Netflix I have better quality copies of in physical media.

But manufacturers are getting smart for it. Watch the Technology Connections channel about newer DVDs.

Long story short, they release Fraiser complete series on DVD. The cheeky fucks reduced the quality to fit on single layer disks as opposed to the higher quality older copies which appear on dual layer disks. The result is a massive hit in quality. And the physical disks are thinner, cheaper and I guarantee won't be playable in 10 years.

The same is happening with cars. I still have an old 2.0 ford petrol car from 2007. The rust is hitting it hard now though and I doubt I'll get through my next inspection. It's headed for the scrapper sometime soon. What can I possibly replace it with? Hybrids and electrics that get tracked, which helps Rachel Reeves with her 3p per mile tax, or a straight petrol/diesel car which, due to the massive emissions restrictions, will not be around in 15 years after manufacturer, you'd struggle with 10 years.

The enshittification of everything has it's purpose. It's already been done, the die has been cast. You will be tracked and there's not very much you can do about it!

Another car from the early 00s or prior. Cubans are still driving cars from the 50s. You have to replace parts every now and then, but you're still better off doing that than buying the globohomo-tracking disposable appliances they pass off as cars nowadays.

Easier said than done!

Cubans drive older cars due to the trade embargos that prevented them from buying newer cars.

UK cars of that vintage are difficult to find in decent condition. Until 2000, a typical 20 year old car was a few hundred pounds or scrap value, owners were not willing to spend the money maintaining them, the rot set in. And once it has, there's only so much you can do.

Part will also start to become more difficult to get hold of. Ford are suffering badly, so OEM parts are getting harder to find. They have even stopped supply parts for the shit Powershifts from 2015 and before. Nissan, Mitsubishi and Honda are all exiting the European markets next year, with Nissan only maintaining a presence to sell rebadged Chinese EVs. They will have little interest in providing parts there either.

Stellantis brands are also on the verge of collapse. They are 39B euros in debt and with it will go brands like Fiat, Vauxhall, etc.

All of this means that as cheap and nasty Chinese EVs proliferate the market, any 20 year old straight petrol is rocketing up in value. Shit, I bought my Ford for £750. If it was able to pass an MOT today, I reckon I would easily get £2000 for it.

But there is not many of these sorts of cars left. And if they are for sale, they command a huge premium.

My 15yo Samsung microwave oven has one wheel to choose the power (that you generally don't touch because why would you want less than max, unless you want to unfreeze food), another to dial up the timer, and after a second it starts automatically. Funniest shit is, cheap Chinese EVs are better than anything manufactured in the west right now. They have this absurd pragmatic functionality about them, the chinks see cars not as works of art or identity, but pure people moving tools and their quality is okay for that. There is also this weird air of honesty about them, like they aren't even trying to hide this fact or play them up with salesman tactics. They just put their mid shit out and feel absolute confidence that they will sell based on their price fitting their quality alone.

Despite the problems the bongnigger mentioned, older cars are the way to go. Many cars coming out now and that will come out in the future will be rendered totally undriveable due to their design. >Direct access to vehicle data is under threat by vehicle manufacturers. Historically, OBD-2 ports have granted vehicle owners and technicians access to vehicle data to assist with maintenance and repair.
>However, in the digital age of the modern car, vehicle data is now transmitted wirelessly and sent directly only to vehicle manufacturers.
>In 2021, 50% of cars already have these connected capabilities and by 2030, about 95% of new vehicles sold globally will have this connectivity (McKinsey).
>Wireless transmission of data, also known as telematics, allows vehicles to be diagnosed and in some cases, repaired without ever going to a shop. While access to this data could provide many benefits to car owners, currently the data is sent only to the vehicle manufacturer who then serves as gatekeeper for the data, determining who can have access and at what cost.

Autos typically outlast manuals in terms of reparing them anyway, if its a normal slushbox transmission, I'm not concerned with it. ZF transmissions will last longer than the engine will for example. You will probably replace a clutchpack 1000 times before a reliable auto transmission fails.

Used manual transmissions are cheap here because they're frequently crashed and salvaged on top of low demand. No one drives manual here so enthusiasts will just crash them having fun.
If you blow second gear you just replace the whole thing for $300 at a junkyard and labour.
At work we use American domestic trucks and generally get 80-160k km before a transmission rebuild and it's thousands of dollars per truck. These are work trucks so obviously regular consumers get around 250k km on a transmission

I do not know. I would say designed obsolescence but I cannot speak with any authority on that other than anecdotal
My father's car was a Chrysler from the 1960's. He finally retired it after it rolled over 400.000 miles.
My first vehicle was a Jeep CJ7. Mileage unknown. I bought it on a salvage title and put an entire new body on it and rebuilt the 258 straight six. It had that street 5 speed in it and I never got around to dumping it and replacing it with a NV4500.
Drove it until I got married. Then sold it because we were poor and it was a toy.
Had a 1980's Chevy Blazer with the V6 - which is just the small block Chevy V8 with the front two cylinders chopped off - and it was a great little truck.
Drove it until it literally disintegrated - it had 300,000 miles on it by then and you could see daylight through the holes in the doors.

Mercedes would give cars to the school, who would then let students use them. If/when they broke, Mercedes would reverse engineer the cars to figure out what went wrong and make the next version better.

Cars from 1999-2012 are the only ones worth getting. Look how much they go for second hand now. You'll pay $2000 for a 2009 Toyota Corolla with 200,000 miles on it. There is a good reason. You can still fix everything on them, cheaply, and most the time yourself without bullshit specialty parts and tools. No $1,000 a piece failing air bag sensors, $400 window motors, or impossible to find/replace/ fix dash components.
I have a 2003 Corolla for in town and work commute with 280,000 miles on it. I just put $400 into it with fluid exchange, new plugs, tires, other odds and ends, because I'm gonna get 350,000 on the engine. It is a lame car, but 40 mpg hwy and I've replaced nothing factory but normal maint. parts, a water pump, a cv axel, and a bearing. Toyota is incredible.

>Going low-tech
I realized, I prefer technology I can walk away from, and the smart phone was constantly breaking my concentration. So I got rid of the smartphone, then got rid of a cell phone altogether. I prefer a home-phone.
Also, my laptop was too much of a distraction, so I reformatted it with a headless arch install. So I can still write, backup data and listen to music, but nothing else. I digitized my journal because my notebooks were falling apart.
I don't use social media, 4chin is enough, and 90% of the time I'm on the net, I'm on Youtube or ChatGPT looking up info on gardening or fixing my ATV's.
Outside of watching, "Wheel of Fortune" and Green Bay Packer football, I'll generally watch a movie before bed, and that's about all the TV I watch.

I do see the appeal of >no tech, don't get me wrong, but limiting your use of needless technology and focusing on the pieces of technology that genuinely aid in your life, and without bloat and clutter, is my approach to things. Examples: no need for tv because i don't watch tv; no need for a microwave because i heat food on the stove; i use a smartphone for whatsapp, calls and email, and nothing more; i drive an old banger because it's lasted me this long already.
granted nothing above is the most efficient, but works for me. AI has just made me more comfortable in my previous tech choices, as it's just rotting people's souls even faster than socmed ever did.
Ideally I'd love a >no internet world, but Pandora's Box has been open in that regards, so I just try and live with it within my mortal means.

i didn't get a smart phone til 2013 because i thought they were useless toys for faggots. nowdays i only use it for GPS and phone number verification if some faggot service refuses to take my VOIP number. maps and internet on the go is pretty game changing, but using it as a toy is for degenerates and women. adults and men still use computers. imagine surviving on the internet without adblock. i had to go back to iphone a few years ago, cause i refuse to waste money on new phones and a nice newer one fell into my lap. what a piece of shit. at least android allows some customization and adblocks that sort of work.

torrents? you can still own anything you could possibly want to, and in much larger volumes than physical media could ever allow.

i don't miss owning piles of plastic junk or books at all. i have gotten rid of all of my nostalgia crap from that era by unceremoniously dumping it in the trash. everything you mentioned was used as decoration to fill bookshelves and collect dust.

with the minor exception of music, which obviously has relatively infinite replay value. but imagine being okay with 10 songs on a CD when an iPod could hold 10,000. i had owned a couple of the first hardware mp3 players on the market in the late 90s, before the iPod so i speak from experience.

physical books can still be okay for no internet situations, or a nice big hardcover textbook that you can lay open on a table and not have to hold in your hands. for random reading though, imagine wasting money on some shitty paperback instead of just loading a pdf/epub on my phone.

the best thing about torrenting is the convenience. every single piece of media that's ever been published is one search away. i fully agree though that paying for streaming services is for women, faggots and retards.

Well for one, a better memory. Reliance on technology is a crutch that reduces your own abilities.
Better spacial awareness as well. You'd maybe be surprised at how poor this skill is in gen z and even millennials. I grew up on paper maps, printed out directions, having to know which way is north, using a compass in the woods, ect. People younger than me can't wrap their heads around topographical maps. Actually, just maps in general, but especially topographical ones. You can tell them exactly where they're standing on the map, which way is north, and then ask them to point to a major land feature on a topographical map and they can't.
Anyways, major drawbacks is you won't know about any current events. At least not in a reliable, informed, close to truth way. You'll also have a harder time getting new information. Good hard media like a trustworthy encyclopedia lags behind current events and new technologies by at least a decade. If you needed to learn a new skill or how a certain thing worked, good fucking luck.
Counter argument, people have unlimited resources quite literally at their fingertips and don't use it in a productive manner at all.
So you'll probably be better off.

>By 2028, most LTE channels are expected to be decommissioned. By 2035, LTE will be fully shut down nationwide.
>Starting January 2026, T-Mobile will only allow new device activations if they support true 5G Standalone (SA) mode.

They are deliberately destroying and altering functional infrastructure in order to force purchases of new phones and new service plans. It's as if the electrical utility was privately owned by appliance manufacturers and they changed their grid frequency every ten years to only be compatible with new production.

I tried looking for a new 4G/5G dumbphone and the best I could find was a flip model with giant buttons for seniors with dementia, but it had all of the downsides of a smartphone with none of the benefits. If you live in the US, you just have to ditch the concept of mobile phones entirely.

Then drink and walk?
Bicycle?
Skateboard?
Jetpack?

Or you could call a cab with your phone. Every bar has a cab service on call pretty much, they'll even let you call from their phone

Thats not the only reason.
Frequency bandwidth is a finite resource. If something is using it then nothing else can, meaning its reserved for that one thing in the case of tech like 3/4/5G
So when you stop using 3G and consumers move onto 4G? Thats an opportunity to free up bandwidth for other applications and net the government a fat stack of cash while doing so

Just get e-ink phone, that way you can still read stuff to continue learning and you can still listen to music at the gym. You can't really watch videos or do other time waisting things because the experience is terrible.. but you can still have maps THINK and a good enough camera.

this is going to be a new trend wave mark my words.
here is some food for thought: technological progress is not perfectly linear, sometimes technologies are abandoned prematurely because of societal or economical reasons, e.g. the fax machine (only caught on in japan because they like to draw), steam heating (adopted in nyc but then discarded for electric and gas). there was a german company who specialized in making type writers and they were built to last a thousand years, miracles of engineering but super heavy and most tech nowadays needs to he cheap and mobile aka made from plastic. anyways my point is that there should be a trend to focus on the quality of tech instead of just quantity. technically, if we wanted we could build computers and cellphones made from such high quality materials and so repairable and so modular that they would last forever and could be handed down from generation to generation but that would implode the line-go-up-forever economy which needs to sell more and more stuff faster and faster.

I've been learning bookbinding for the past few years.
Doing it right can preserve books even in a total flood. Also Etsy whores love to buy bound books.

it is a bit of everything really, a buffet of privacy invasion.

>they have satellites that can read a book from space now so you have no privacy by default.
you sure do seem cavalier making that statement...as you lick your lips hungry for your next make-work privacy trampling bullshit feature rollout nobody asked for or wanted.
as an American citizen (if you are one) you really do have privacy by default, and when people like you forget that as they climb the corporate tech world of greed for that next promotion, writing that malicious and privacy invading intrusive line of code violating American Civil Liberties, that you may be better suited mentally and geographically for the tyranny of a third world dictatorship, than being an American citizen..
your blasé attitude about privacy speaks volumes to me about you, and i find your kind to be everything structurally and morally wrong with the rights trampling modern tech world attitude.

Going low tech is the wrong move.
What you need to do is develop the habits of a 1995-2010 netizen, which are:
-Computers are supposed to be complex, not simple.
-Networks (dark, overlay, etc) beat clouds.
-Eschew mobile for desktop paradigms.
-No file? You don't possess the media.
-Easy Button™ == Rapes your angus.
