I was looking at part time warehouse jobs in the same city this apartment is located in and you can make enough working part time at a warehouse to afford this. Ironically, the first place I ever heard this idea was on NPR (which has been accused of having a leftist slant by people on the right a lot). It wasn't about Japan specifically, but the guy being interviewed was talking about how unfortunate it was that public support for welfare programs seemed to correlate with ethnic homogeneity. It's almost like people have an innate drive to take care of those who are more closely related to them (their family being 1st priority, people of the same race being 2nd priority, other races being 3rd priority at best (most likely just not a concern at all)).

japan is a lot poorer than we are, but they have roughly equal quality of life averaging across everything. that means their quality of life per dollar is incredible while ours is terrible, and europe is in between.
