Not buddhist (yet), but the Ego is necessary because from my exprience of the Atman (holy spirit / true self) you can't live in the society with that state. So technically unless you are a monk even the Atman is a temporary state. The laic from the sangha help monks to sustain their body in this world until they fully ascend.
To be like the Atman is easy (laic life living with preceipts of Buddha), but to be it is very hard. But as Christian it took me years to understand that Buddhism + forest + sun is the way to transcend fully.

It's all about the choice to follow the path that lead to salvation or not. Being born in the harsh environement lead to faster salvation.
You can't taste joy without paint or freedom without being jailed.
Most people build their own prison out of fear of the unknown, then that prison become, action, habits and finally their own nature. To breaktrouth you need firstly to realize that you are your own prison.

You know your state of mind is infectious to everyone in proximity right. This is why chuds meet endless friction.
