>In a free market, such a product wouldn’t be popular.
Didn't youngsters eat tide pods for a meme? Isn't McDonalds and other fast food joints still ridiculously popular despite being unhealthy?

Healthiness and popularity are often uncorrelated.
>that’s their right
Companies shouldn't put products into the market than will cause severe harm or fatalities without misusing them.
But hey, I'm sure the companies would do the right thing just out of the goodness of their hearts.
They wouldn't put cocaine into common medicine like toothpain relievers just to boost their sales through addictive substances would they?
I'm sure if OSHA didn't exist, many companies would still hold high standards because they care about their workers and their health too!

That's just humanity in a nutshell.
People will happily eat shit, use lead painting or visit hospitals with a Therac machine simply because they don't know better.
If you're not part of the masses in this regard, (You) need to know better. Not by humiliating people for buying paint that kills people but by bringing in change that such a paint is removed from the shelves so people don't kill themselves obliviously for not knowing what lead does to you in the long-term.
