I'm not all that much interested if he's a bad guy or not, more whether he was aware he was acting egoistically. My opinion is that it was always sitting on the edges of his consciousness, able to be inspected if he chose to, but he ignored it. And that reflects a lot of Rodya's issues too, she too chooses to ignore it. I think a lot of our secret selfishness, or, to be 'Jungian', our shadow, functions like this. Theoretically accessible, but too painful and inconvenient for most of us to look at. Uncovering these things can be revelatory, and yet, we sort of had all the pieces to know about them all along.
