Asgore is flawed, kinda loser guy who refuses to let go of past and learn to move on properly.
Asgore and Toriel don't fit each other. Toriel is unable to face that and rather distracts herself and drinks while hanging around with a random dude rather than being a responsible parent(letting her kid hang around with questionable gal, ignores their mental health problems and general attitude problems(the baking scene with Suzie where Toriel says "Kris sometimes does that" and having no idea or interest in her kid being mentally unwell)). Instead she pretends everything is okay.
Asgore keeps begging to get together because he formed his whole life around being in relationship and feels utterly empty and aimless, unable to face that they won't get together and it doesn't work.

And they sabotage their kid's formative years because they both act so immature. Fucked up but surprisingly realistic.
