The Sonic franchise is meant to be the "cool" version of Mario by doing new creative things in every entry and having complex stories.
This of course, stopped being a thing since Sonic 4: Episode one as the Super Mario franchise would go on to make extremely creative games like Odyssey, Brothership, Wonder, and the upcoming Bananza game. Meanwhile, the Sonic IP has gone stale, uncreative, soulless, and even outright cynical since it's older fans from the 90s didn't know how Sonic works.
It's kinda hilarious how Mario became Sonic and Sonic became Mario with how their franchises work nowadays.
