To be fair, Uma's aren't some 'they're literally everywhere' species. According to Special Week, her home-town only had one Uma in it and that was her. It's entirely likely that the average human will go most of their life maybe meeting like a few hundred Uma at most ever. Rural types might NEVER meet one.
