I think it depends on the amount of carats for each Event too (the ones that you can farm with Event Points).
t-b-h you kinda need a Club in the long run, the monthly rewards are too attractive as a f2p, but participating in one is very easy: Just trade shoes (which amounts to clicking buttons) and keep playing as you always do (it'll raise your Fan count naturally).

Rewards are based on club rank, the high rank clubs get pretty much get 10+ free pulls every month, so it's a pretty good method for a F2P.
Even outside of carats you get the club points (crown icons) which you can use to buy SSR cards in the Shop, among other items.
