I’m Melvin, a Retribution Paladin in World of Warcraft, and I play a supporting role in more ways than one. My marriage isn’t typical—my wife sees a guy named Derek, and, well, I’m okay with it. It’s not easy, but I found a weird sense of balance in it. Gaming, especially WoW, is my escape, a place where things make sense, where I have control.

I joined a guild called Lightforged a while back, and I hit it off with our tank, a warrior named BrutalMight. He had this confidence about him—always leading the charge in dungeons, taking the hits for the team. We started chatting more, talking about our lives in-between pulls. He told me his real name was Derek, and I noticed he had the same casual, commanding vibe as my wife’s guy.

That got me thinking. One night, during a raid cooldown, I brought it up. “You know, my wife likes... stronger guys, like you. It’s a thing we have.” It was awkward, but he caught on. We talked more, and after some time, I made an offer. I told him about my wife, how she might enjoy his company. I figured a guy who could keep the whole raid together could handle other things too.

Turns out, he was the same Derek. We both kind of laughed about it—how small the world could be, even in Azeroth. It was strange, but we kept raiding together. He became more than just a guildmate. He took on a new role, both in-game and out. And somehow, in both realms, I found my place.
