The 78 trilogy does a really good job of sticking to White Base, Char, and cutting out stuff like the G-Fighter. It helps that it has some monster-of-the-week elements that it can cut out for a movie. The big moments still hit in the movies, not as hard as the show, mind you, but it does a real good job of making an abridged version of Gundam. You should still watch the series, but this works as a substitute for the most part.
Zeta being...well, more complex. There's a lot more going on in the Gryps Conflict, and it requires more breathing room, like Kamille and Four's relationship. ANT is more of a Cliff Notes version of Zeta.

I tend to start singing the OP for the original Mobile Suit Gundam whenever I get an opportunity to fuse the big bot for the kill
I just really like giant robots
