GFC is far worse than people thought because it was illegal to be drifter in our time and that shit was actually enforced nowadays. In the 30s you could get away with shanty towns. Nowadays, even tent cities get cleared. Even slum dwellings get cleared. These people just end up in jail and then indirectly systematically purged.
It's worse than Nazi Germany or the Soviets and has killed more people than Nazi Germany or the Soviets, especially after covid.

It's more about not lying to yourself than it is "the power of friendship". Every character has a darker side to their personality that they're in denial of which they have to learn how to accept that aspect of their personality so the paranoia and violence can't take root.
