>After waking up in an abandoned building, she immediately feeds on the nearest security guard and notices that her powers have waned significantly. While she still has superhuman strength, telekinesis, and the ability to glide through the air, the rest of the game is spent unlocking her other abilities. These other powers are tied to your clan, but you don’t pick that until a little later, instead spending the game’s opening becoming comfortable with the basics.
>As I learn from the game and my various conversations with Carl, Vampire: The Masquerade is a world with many proper nouns and specific terms relating to the lore of vampires (which are also known as Kindred). Thankfully, from what we’ve seen so far, The Chinese Room does a good job of gradually explaining the world to new players. For example, as Phyre searches for a way out of the building, police cars roll up, and Fabien reminds her to abide by the Masquerade – if the cops find her covered in blood, surrounded by corpses with bite marks on their necks, they’ll figure out she’s a vampire, which is the worst crime she could commit.
>After reaching the roof of the abandoned building and seeing the game’s title displayed across the backdrop of the nighttime Seattle skyline, Fabien guides Phyre to an abandoned apartment nearby and debriefs her on the state of the world. Fabien has lost his memory from recent days, but he’s been a vampire for the whole 100 years Phyre was in torpor, so he’s able to bring her up to speed on the Kindred politics of the city, how recent Young Adult media has changed how the world perceives them, and new threats to their kind. Fabien specifically mentions that guns are much more dangerous than they were 100 years ago. Phyre, new to the country, asks if there are a lot of guns in America. Fabien laughs.
