I also went to Community College, same major. The smaller class size lends itself to making friends far easier. The downside for me was that literally fucking nothing else happened outside of class, so I was stuck with what I had in my immediate surroundings (Though this may be different for you, try to go to events if your school has any, mine didn't).
Either way, the onus is on you to make something happen. I recommend sitting in the dead center of the classroom and forcing yourself to talk to people. If your situation is like mine, you cannot afford to let an opportunity to make a connection slip you by.
Every single class was like a grab bag of random people, so I didn't see any cliqueing going on. I guess you could say micro-cliques can develop within each class as the semester goes on if a group of people get along separate from the rest of the class. Just make sure you're apart of that group if it happens
