How is it disingenuous? There was clearly a concerted effort to make Pauline to mirror Mario. This isn't the first japanese franchise to make a female version/mirror of the main character. It's up to the audience to interpret what that means. Whether there's a hidden meaning, a mythic invention, or if it's just a cartoon gimmick is up to the viewer.
