People grew attache to him, and between the "personas" for his boss fights, and the cartoon, he had actually a lot more character going for him, than most videogame villains at the time. And one somehow more "consistent" (Bowser took a while to be properly define, Eggman had like three different versions of himself in media, Ganon went throguh a full rebrand as Ganondorf...) Being brutally honest, out of all the possible Villains to "get rid off", K. Rool was probably the worst choice Nintendo could had took after Bowser himself. As I said, Ganondorf essentially "replaced" Ganon in all but lore. Star Fox fans don't care that much if Andross ever come back. And speaking as a hardcore Ridley fag from the Smash bros era, who really wants a modern boss fight with him in either the Dread style, or Beyond now... Yeah, Metroid fans are mostly fine with new villains taking over the Space Pirates. K. Rool has character, and the attempt to replace him, never felt right among fans, and the more they got "denyied" only increased the demand. With that said, I will also be honest and said, if Nintendo would had try with something like the Void Co crew on their first attempt, instead of dispossable villains like the "other kongs" from Jungle Beat and the Tikis, it may had "stick" as the villains of a new era. But they didn't, and we only had that feeling of "lesser one shots" to compare to the Kremlings.

The Snowmads were clearly a huge improvement over the Tikis and the Kongs from Jungle beat. The two major issues with them is that they did felt very one shot partly because we already had that precedent so far but also as their "Freeze the land" gimmick didn't felt like something it could be expanded upon. The other major issue was trying to build up a "mystery" around Fredrik... just to reveal he was exactly what he seemed to be, a big Warluss leading a Viking crew. As a villain group, the Snowmads are good, as individual characters, they ended somehow lacking.

Honestly, if we go by design and personality alone, so far the ranking of DK villains goes K. Rool and the Kremlings>Void Co>Snowmads>> And then is a toss up between the Tikis and the Other Kongs. The Kongs win in Design. But the Tikis somehow had more personality (but they are helped by Returns somehow having more of an story than Jungle Beat). In general, Nintendo got better with each passing villain, but never got it quite right as the versatility of the Kremlings.

I think the big question is:
WHY IS DK THE ONLY ONE WHO GOT REDESIGNED?
