Assume an even playing field
In a 1V1 game you have a loosely 50% chance of winning before skill enters the equation, but there's probably an even chance that the other player is of a higher or lower skill level.
In a 1V1V1 your base chance is 33%, you are now losing more often than winning on a level playing field, but now there's an additional chance that one of the teams is just straight up better at the game than your team. Especially in situations where players can select a specific team, this tends to cause a lower than 33% chance on the teams that are not selected by players in the know. This exact scenario happened in FF14's Frontlines game mode which is why they disabled team selection and still nobody ever played it.
In a FFA game mode your base chance of victory is going to generally sit at 10% or lower, losing becomes routine, with wins becoming exhilarating rare occasions.
1V1 has a team winning often enough that they feel like they are owed a victory but losing often enough to feel responsible for the loss rather than simply admitting it was a statistic.
1V1V1 *feels* equally weighted but the player is actually losing the vast majority of matches while also still feeling responsible for it.
And then there's 1V99 games where you just lose 99 times in a row until the game chucks you in with a bunch of bots, children and people dying from overdoses which gives you the dopamine hit of 100 simultaneous wins.
Same this that happens when you hit pity on a gacha banner by the way.
