However, the DS port runs at 256x192 compared to 256x224 of the snes version.

Additionally, you do not account for the overscan cropping that is set to default on almost every single snes emulator, including all the retroarch cores. This also decreases either vertical or horizontal resolution, which is then scaled.
This is done so normoids can just fill the screen vertically by default.
This is in addition to your supposition that rectangles are never ever used in video games, and that all boxes must be square.
This is also incorrect.
The human field of vision is wider than it is tall, for obvious reasons. It is easier to move your head up and down maximally compared to left or right.
