I have my own hypothesis on why transracialism hasn't taken off yet and I think it's because of how entrenched race is as a concept (at least in the US, which was founded on a racial caste system). Liberals are horrified by the idea of whites being able to adopt the struggles of non-whites and the idea of non-whites giving up an aspect of their identity to physically assimilate within white culture. Conservatives, meanwhile, are disgusted by the idea of a non-white "cheating" their way into white privilege instead of "earning" it by being born into it. This is especially true for neo-nazis and nationalists, it's much harder to chant "blood and soil" if someone can switch from black to white. It also seems like the procedure to transition, like with changing skin color, seems like it's more expensive and more superficial than HRT/sex-change surgery but I could be off-base in this respect.
